Anyone ever put a leather jacket in the washing machine???

Ive bought a beautiful leather jacket on ebay but it stinks to high heaven. Its musty and filthy both inside on the lining and the leather its self.
Have any of you ever dared to put a leather jacket in the wash? The thought of wearing this even after a good damp sponge wipe down and airing is repulsive still.
It was a bargain so if it might be sucessful I might consider the risk.
Specialist cleaning seems to be more than double the price I paid for it therefore not really an option.

I wash leather trousers and uggs in the washing machine on hand wash cycle. Works a treat.

whotheeff · 11/04/2019 21:49

Dry cleaners aren't good for leather - way too many chemicals and it can damage the colour.

Celtic sheepskin sell a special wash for using in the machine with their ugg type boots. It's really good and leaves the leather fairly supple. It also has tea tree oil in it which should help with the wiffyness.

I have ( soft leather biker) turned it inside out and zipped it up gentle hand wash / wool cycle - took it out , pulled/ stretched into shape, towels in the arms to keep shape, put on hanger and when dry used leather balm to put moisture back in - came out as good as new .

...how is it now?

Candleglow7475 · 12/04/2019 18:48

Fingers crossed for you!

Cookit · 12/04/2019 18:49

Well with the smell and dirt it wasn’t wearable so nothing really to lose and everything to gain!! Fingers crossed!

TheExtraGuineaPig · 12/04/2019 18:51

I have too.. I actually took my much loved v pale grey jacket to the dry cleaners, it was really expensive and she said - I shouldn't tell you this but why don't you stick it in the machine? It's just skin after all. Was absolutely fine.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 12/04/2019 20:09

Omg I am embarrassingly excited to find out how it turns out.

megletthesecond · 12/04/2019 20:11

I can't see why it wouldn't be ok on a cold gentle wash cycle.

TheGirlWhoLived · 12/04/2019 20:13

Good luck op!

Mrsjayy · 12/04/2019 21:01

Why isn't she updating is it ok ?!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 12/04/2019 21:22

it shrank, OP tried it on and is now trapped in a too small, damp, fitted leather jackets unable to shrug off the moist grip of sweaty leather jacket sleeves

But it smells much better.

Perfectmummy1234 · 12/04/2019 21:35
