Anyone ever put a leather jacket in the washing machine???

Ive bought a beautiful leather jacket on ebay but it stinks to high heaven. Its musty and filthy both inside on the lining and the leather its self.
Have any of you ever dared to put a leather jacket in the wash? The thought of wearing this even after a good damp sponge wipe down and airing is repulsive still.
It was a bargain so if it might be sucessful I might consider the risk.
Specialist cleaning seems to be more than double the price I paid for it therefore not really an option.

It should be just fine.

It will need to dry out completely, obviously, and it may be quite stiff, but you can feed the leather to make it soft and supple again.

Did the seller mention it stank? I bought a vintage lambskin coat from ebay that was very stinky, like it had been in the wardrobe for years. Nothing got rid of the pong, washing, febreeze, vodka sprays, hanging on the line for days. Eventually I gave up and put it in a clothes bank.

The seller didn't mention the pong, wish I had raised it with them.

TheMarbleFaun · 13/04/2019 07:46

We need to know the outcome OP!
We are poised to spend Saturday afternoon washing our leathers if your experiment was successful Wink

ShopoholicIn · 13/04/2019 07:50

LadyPenelope68 · 13/04/2019 08:07

If you're a clean freak I cant understand why you've bought something to wear second hand, it's never going to be properly clean.

Perfectmummy1234 · 13/04/2019 08:59

out of the washing machine and all looked good
I have hung it in the airing cupboard for the night
yet to take a peak

We now want a picture!
If it's a bit crusty when dry, use a leather 'moisturiser' or gel.

Branleuse · 13/04/2019 11:19

i reckon it will be crispy and ruin the hang

Ninkaninus · 13/04/2019 11:27

I think I would dry it flat. Otherwise the weight of the wet leather might ruin the shape of it.

Just make sure to treat the leather to restore suppleness.

Mokepon · 13/04/2019 12:14

It's sad that I'm rather excited by this.

gubbsywubbsy · 13/04/2019 16:08

Yes and it was fine ... I wash everything !!

gubbsywubbsy · 13/04/2019 16:09

To get leather dry cleaned is very expensive and ineffective ( I'm an ex dry cleaner )

gubbsywubbsy · 13/04/2019 16:10

Just read you have washed it .. dry it hanging up unless it's super wet in which case spin it again.

Newadventure · 13/04/2019 21:23

picture please, thankyou very much with a cherry on top!

TheMarbleFaun · 14/04/2019 16:58

Is it safe to assume the washing experiment has gone disastrously wrong & the OP has fallen out with us for egging her on?!

Knittedfairies · 14/04/2019 16:59

Come on OP! Picture!

CalamityJune · 14/04/2019 17:03

Oh this is so unsatisfying!

I have a lovely biker jacket that has been on many a night out with me and is a little whiffy under the pits Blush i'd love to know if a delicates wash would sort it.

I did wash both mine and my sister's wedding dresses in the bath with woolite and it did a good job.

Cataline · 14/04/2019 17:09

I need to know the outcome too as I have a lovely soft tan leather jacket with a big coffee stain on one arm!

DeftandGlory · 14/04/2019 17:34

Saddle soap?

I shove everything in the machine. It’s the detergent rather than the water.

KaliforniaDreamz · 14/04/2019 18:13

i took soft italian leather sofa cushions to be dry cleaned and they came back ruined.
nex time i would do it myself!

please show us the jacket OP

gubbsywubbsy · 14/04/2019 18:26

You can wash most wedding dresses as they are polyester ( marketed as poly satin ) .. they wash up a treat and the beads all sparkle !
