I think Australia's push to become a republic will be on the table with our next labour government.

I think that there is unlikely to be any movement on the republic until Charles is king.

Personally I’m against a republic until we deal with issues around treaties and indigenous representation in government those things are way more important.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/04/2019 01:02

Meghan and Harry have named 4 charities to benefit from their global baby shower fund.

Incredible how royal patronage, even a mention gives soaring publicity to previously unknown charities.

The Meghan effect means that she can tap straight into American donors.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/04/2019 01:08

Princess Eugenie has posted a gorgeous pic of her and mum Sarah from the early 90s

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/04/2019 01:16

I think the RF are missing a trick by not having Eugenie in their front line re: engagements/visits/patronages as she comes across as so lovely & personable & she also has that old fashioned beauty/glamour of late 19th/early 20th century Princess if you see/know what I mean.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/04/2019 01:18

There is an account on twitter called the positively megbot and Meghan followers are called the MeyHive

One of the posts was that Kate regular has briefing breakfasts with Royal reporters.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/04/2019 01:23

@TracyBeakerSoYeah

Totally agree re:Eugenie.
She has been smart in keeping her instagram profile regularly updated with engagement she carries out.
There’s about 4/5 elderly Royals, HM included who are no longer going to be able to carry out duties. Perhaps Anne can keep going for another 20 years and they’ll dump more on Sophie, but they are mad not to usez Beatrice and Eugenie

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/04/2019 01:27

CurlyWurlyTwirly re the Princess Alice book I'm still on chapter 4!
I've been more into reading about The Yorkshire Ripper especially 'Somebody's Mother, Somebody's Daughter: True Stories from Victims and Survivors of the Yorkshire Ripper'. It's shocking & brings tears to your eyes re how difficult it was to be a woman in a bad relationship/bad circumstances in the 1970s. Hell even how difficult it was to be classed as a 'respectable Ripper victim'. The misogyny of the 1970s is unbelievable.
Going back to the 1880s, bizarrely Prince Albert Victor was considered to a possible suspect for Jack the Ripper at one point.....which I cannot see as being entirely possible.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/04/2019 01:30

Great minds think alike CurlyWurlyTwirly
Perhaps it will be in the Fail next week about why Eugenie isn't & should be in the Royal 'Premier League' according to Mumsnet 🤔

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/04/2019 07:58

Eugenie is patron of the hospital she was operated at for scoliosis and works to raise awareness of modern slavery too. Her Instagram is a great example of how you can be royal but still move with the times and not be stuck in the 1950s when it comes to interacting with people.

Queenoffarles I agree re racism in the USA. The prison system makes millions and poor young black men are being given harsh sentences so private companies and individuals can make fortunes. That is racism and far more horrific than any snide comments on hair.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/04/2019 08:32

@user1457017537 Yes but unless you've been the target of it you don't realise how insidious microaggressions are. Racism takes many forms these days, it isn't just Tommy Robinson wrapped in an England flag, and I don't think it's the role of non-POCs to police what it is and isn't.

Anyway, back to fashion and here's Marie (not Mary!) of Denmark in a fairly standard blazer but nice dress. Are sheer black tights back?

Gooseysgirl · 06/04/2019 08:37

Totally agree re. Eugenie! I think she has struck the right balance in her public profile on social media and there is a lot of goodwill towards her.

user1457017537 · 06/04/2019 08:38

Are sheer black tights back? Not for me, I was told they are for evening only.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/04/2019 08:39

I haven't seen them on a royal since Diana in the 80s!

We will have to agree to disagree re rascism Queen as I feel there are far more important manifestations of rascism ie people trafficking, slavery and poverty which are ignored.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/04/2019 09:19

Sheer black tights are apparently back.

I disagree about bringing Beatrice and Eugenie into the forefront. Less is more with the Royal Family.

I think the fact that Meghan is American, an actress, a divorcee and her lack of a relationship with her family are the reasons for the press against her, rather than the fact she is mixed race. Her paternal side's 'white trash' behaviour is targeted far more than her black mother who is mainly portrayed as behaving with dignity.

queenofarles · 06/04/2019 09:53

user , my friend who dated a black American, told us once that what Trump did is bring up all that suppressed hate towards coloured people out on the table, and it’s true , hate crimes are on the rise.
MM is liked here, loved by her Husband and Father in law, that’s all that should matter. If their PR will continue making something out of nothing and keep concentrating on the race angle, then it will spectaculary backfire.

People have very short memory , Kate was ridiculed constantly she was accused of pretending to be posh, not posh enough, too posh , fake upper class accent, working class background, people made fun of Carole’s work as an air hostess,Kate was never pregnant , she is just pretending, she is work shy, the DM reported non stop about their Amner hall renovations, and how much it’s costing, basically all that is said about MM now.

Someone on here said, the MM and Harry getting married is the best thing to happen to Kate and William. And it’s soo true.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/04/2019 10:04

Yes I'm afraid we will @user1457017537. It's not even about Meghan really. It's just like how I think men should listen when women talk about sexism (rather than ask why they care about a pay gap when FGM exists) I prefer to listen to POC when they talk about racism. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love looking at the fashions on this thread and it's really interesting from an historical perspective, but it has convinced me that Australia must become a republic. The whole idea of royalty in this day and age is crazy, I'm not sure how you Brits put up with so much of your money being spent on it. There are obviously many, many more important issues on the agenda in Oz though, as pp pointed out.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/04/2019 10:46

It’s surprisingly difficult for the average person, Canada has a strict immigration policy.

You're not wrong - I can't get Canadian citizenship and my mother was Canadian!

Elllllle We put up with it because they say the income brought in from tourism etc etc outweighs the cost.

GrumbleBumble · 06/04/2019 10:54

Ellllllle the RF don't really cost us though - they take a few pounds per tax payer from national budget the but they also generate revenue for it. While Buck House, Windsor castle would draw visitors with or woth the RF it's little things like local flower sales when a royal visits, the new outfits people buy and tourists drawn by events like changing the guard, Trooping the Colour etc that more than balance that out.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/04/2019 11:21

They cost us more than we think as the bill never includes the massive security costs.

EstrellaDamn · 06/04/2019 11:26

Well we don't exactly have the choice so we? We can't vote them out. Unless someone instigated a revolution we're stuck with the freeloaders.

Thedarklady · 06/04/2019 12:23

add in the Middleton genes and it’s possible any of the three kiddies could hanker after a professional career

What professional career have Pippa or James had? Pippa's husband has propped up James's failing swatstika printing marshmallow company. Uncle Gary the doucebag (or whatever his name is) has helped Party Pieces financially.
