Can just attending an event count as carrying out an engagement? I seem to remember George running around the place at various events his parents were but I assumed that was because they thought it would be a nice day out for him!

Mind you, Estelle of Sweden is already accompanying her mother on engagements and always looks so interested in what's going on too!

I don't think we'll see too much of William's children until they have left university unless William becomes King in the next 15 years. Charles will slim the official family down and I don't think William will change this. Harry will equivalent of Margaret but with more purpose in his life.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 17:55

And William will probably slim it down even more. I can't see the future dukes of Kent and Gloucester doing as much as what their fathers do right now. As someone said a few threads ago, Wimbledon is patiently waiting for Prince Edward to pop clogs so that Kate can become it's president!

They won't be going anywhere while the Queen is still alive but they're even less likely to go anywhere when she's dead! Harry will be the son of the king then and will probably have to take on more responsibilities.

True, but I think Meghan has her eyes on the Commonwealth. That certainly came across in the engagement interview. They could fulfil a lot of Commonwealth visits and duties from a permanent home in, say, Canada. They could easily travel back to the UK for those royal duties that require their presence.

I can totally see this. Governor General of Canada for Harry?
They could easily get to Oz and NZ on a more regular basis.
Weekends in California or New York. Totally doable.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 19:11

I think the Duke of Gloucester was Governor General in Canada at one point so it's not eight out precedence. And Meghan clearly has an affinity to the country after living there for so long.

Eight out? Without!

Canada would be perfect. Would give them more freedom.

AdaColeman · 05/04/2019 19:48

The role of Governor General has changed considerably in recent years though, and in many Commonwealth countries now it's part of the constitution that the GG must be a citizen of that country, so I think it would be an unlikely retrograde step to appoint a member of the royal family.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/04/2019 19:53

It is also likely that there will be less and less call for appearances by minor Royals as time goes on. I can't imagine Beatrice and Eugenie being wheeled out to open health centres when William is king in the same way the Kents have done.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/04/2019 20:09

As a US citizen, would it be that hard for Meghan to acquire Canadian citizenship, and then Harry through marriage.
It would make Canada very high profile to have the British / English King’s second son as GG.

In fact the GG is technically the Viceroy of Canada no.2 to the Queen

Hazeintheclouds · 05/04/2019 20:13

Wimbledon is patiently waiting for Prince Edward to pop clogs so that Kate can become it's president!

Hmm
QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 20:14

On second thoughts, I don't think it would happen as there'd be a massive outcry about nepotism.

AdaColeman · 05/04/2019 20:18

Harry would have to brush up his French a bit, as Canada's GG is always bilingual these days! Wink

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 20:21

He can get lessons from his ever-resourceful wife!

Thing is we don't need them more in Australia. We really don't. I imagine Canada feels the same way. They are being promoted to the Commonwealth as a solution to a problem that does not exist. We have perfectly fine home grown governors general here.

Daisypie · 05/04/2019 20:43

*don't need them here

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 20:44

No one is promoting them as future GGs, it was just a suggestion on this thread! Next thing you know the Mail will say it's definitely happening!

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/04/2019 21:01

I'm actually really surprised there hasn't been another push for Australia to become a republic.

As far as William's children performing royal duties when they are adults and displacing Meghan and Harry, what if they don't want to? I suppose George doesn't have much of a choice in the matter, but what if Charlotte and Louis decide that they don't want a life of dressing up and ribbon-cutting? Assuming that ribbons still need to be cut, there could still be a prominent role for Harry and Meghan for a long time.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/04/2019 21:05

I love it when a plan comes together...😂

I think Australia's push to become a republic will be on the table with our next labour government.

Zara at Aintree today. ( cannot get over the other race goers in their “clubwear” in this weather.
