Just love Letti's outfits, The Caroline Hererra cocktail dress is beautiful and the plain Hugo Boss green dress is very simple and chic. I agree about the length.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/03/2019 14:02

These are the daughters of the Emperors 2nd son ( the Japanese Beatrice and Eugenie; as it were). Princesses Mako and Kako.

Anyway, Mako is getting married to a commoner so has to give up her Royal status. Her sister Kako has just finished a degree in psychology and it looks like she is going to have to sacrifice her career to carry out Royal duties. dm link

The misogyny in Japan is upsetting.

Leti nails it as usual. Beautiful, elegant and unstuffy.

TheCraicDealer · 26/03/2019 14:55

I find the rules around the Japanese RF confusing- who could they marry outside their own family who wouldn't be considered a commoner? Do they have an aristocratic system over there too?

UrsulaPandress · 26/03/2019 15:06

I too love that dress length but chortling about it being modern. I was a teen when the mini went out in favour of the midi. I had a purple midi skirt with a black leather look trim.

Becles · 26/03/2019 15:16

The Japanese accession rules affecting women were apparently changed to mirror the western monarchies in the 19th century and tightened up again after the war, possibly influenced by the Allies.

I know nothing about glove etiquette, does anyone know why Mathilde only has one glove on and is holding the other alongside her bag?

pinkladyapples · 26/03/2019 15:42

Also is she is rocking a Kate inspired headband??

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/03/2019 16:00

My guess is that moments after the photo was taken she astounded the South Koreans by doing the Moonwalk?? Grin

The Japanese succession rules are certainly behind the times in this day and age. When the Crown Prince becomes king next month, his first in line heir will be his brother, even though he has a daughter.

SenecaFalls · 26/03/2019 16:03

I should have said becomes emperor, not King.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/03/2019 16:18

Yes, and a while ago they thought they'd be looking at a constitutional crisis as both Akhito's sons only had daughters, but then the younger one's wife had a son. He's a lot younger than Mako and Kako though.

The Japanese court always seems stifling to me - the women, when in Western dress, look like they're from 1910 and then there are the laws against them inheriting the throne too. I pity Masako for having to deal with all that and it's no surprise she had some sort of breakdown. It must've been very hard, especially for a woman as intelligent as she is.

The one glove thing. She's just shaken hands with someone

Paradyning · 26/03/2019 16:27

Mathilde has also gone overboard on the literal dressing - as beautiful as those dresses are

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/03/2019 16:33

I presume Mathilde is wearing a local designer given the printed silk.
Those headbands are everywhere

Mmmhmmokdear · 26/03/2019 16:34

I noticed Mathilde and one of the Japanese princesses are both wearing the Kate headband! It must be officially a thing now!

I love the colours on Mathilde's outfit.

TyraAllen · 26/03/2019 17:25

The headband is on the covers of at least two of the various editions of April's Vogue - UK and China, so it doesn't look like it is going anywhere just yet.

Plus we're about to hit summer events, so much increased opportunity for hat/headband occasions: Ascot, Trooping the Colour, a christening for baby Sussex...

Kedgeree · 26/03/2019 17:34

Didn't the Japanese princess recently announce that her engagement is off? Some sort of minor scandal in the fiancé family but sufficient to make him unacceptable as her spouse?

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/03/2019 19:22

That was a couple of years ago @Kedgeree but I don't think they split up, just said they weren't ready and needed more time. It's the same guy she's now marrying.

The other princess saying she's giving up her dreams for royal duties is very strange and rather sad. She sounds like an intelligent young woman, she'll be bored stiff at the imperial court.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/03/2019 07:06

I really like Mary’s midi skirt.
I don’t like the dark green blouse with it.
I think a black silk shell top would have coordinated better.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/03/2019 07:09

looks like fun
