Why do so many mners recommend using soap instead of shower gel?
My DH prefers soap but I find it "squeaky"
We are in a v hard water area if that matters.
Please explain

Because it gets you cleaner, it's cheaper and better for the environment. Shower gel are full of additives that are not particularly good for your skin.

Try a natural soap like Dr. Bronner, Nesti Dante or Faith in Nature. Or homemade soap from markets.

thedevilinablackdress · 25/02/2019 21:50

To avoid all the plastic bottles.

Quintella · 25/02/2019 22:00

I hate the squeaky feeling too. I'll be sticking to shower gel.

cleanerneeded · 25/02/2019 22:09

Use handmade soap (but they get used up really quickly in the shower) or Waitrose bar soap, £1.20 for 4 bars if I remember correctly. I don't notice the squeaky feeling. Are you using a detergent bar regather than soap?

Cynderella · 25/02/2019 22:21

We've moved back to soap to avoid plastic bottles. You can buy lovely soap, so I'm happy to use it instead of shower gel. We have soap holders with magnets so the soap doesn't go soggy,

I do miss bath products though ...

WellTidy · 25/02/2019 22:27

I’ve been a bar lap lover pretty much all my life (I am 43). The main reason is that it is so much cheaper, but more recently it is because I am cutting down on plastics. I buy the Waitrose essentials range which is 4 for £1odd. TK maxx also has loads.

WellTidy · 25/02/2019 22:28

A bar soap lover ...

Sakura7 · 25/02/2019 22:36

Yeah TK Maxx has lots of lovely soaps. The Castelbel ones are really nice.

CouldBeAnyoneReally · 25/02/2019 22:36

You get used to the squeaky feeling Grin If i use shower gel now I feel slimy. Body Shop shea butter soap is my favourite.

Quintella · 25/02/2019 22:43

I hate the squeaky feeling so much. My skin feels stripped. That's why i like shower oil.

azulmariposa · 25/02/2019 22:44

Bar soap ready dries out my skin, so I use shower gel. Would prefer to use proper soap though.

DH uses the Waitrose essential 4 pack too

I have dry skin but also get a slimy feeling from shower gel (think to do with hard water)

I definitely agree re plastic bottles and love a good rummage in tkmaxx toiletries section so I will look there

Where do you get a magnetic soap holder?

I find olive oil based soaps moisturising. TK Maxx, Body Shop, health food type shops.
There's also Dove which is a non-soap bar cleanser.

hugoagogo · 26/02/2019 06:58

I wonder if squeaky people are lathering up all over?
I wouldn't soap up my arms and legs unless I was actually muddy; they just get rinsed and moisturiser afterwards with almond oil.

CouldBeAnyoneReally · 26/02/2019 07:00

Also I’ve noticed that those horrible red dry spotty bumps that I used to get at the top of my arms have completely disappeared since I switched to soap. I don’t think that soap is drying in itself, more that shower gels leave a layer of (slimy) chemicals on your skin which gives the impression of moisture.

Blessthekids · 26/02/2019 07:08

I'm trying to make the transition to cut down on plastic including moving to a shampoo soap! I'm taking note of suggestions. I use cheaper soap for hand washing but will probably try more expensive stuff for shower.

buckeejit · 26/02/2019 07:12

I have bought the nesti Dante ones & they smell nice at the start but I have the problem of no nice soap dish. I'm not dying about using it in the shower either.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/02/2019 07:19

"Because it gets you cleaner, it's cheaper and better for the environment"

These ^^ are exactly the reasons why I have never liked shower gel. Shower gel leaves a film on the skin, and never gets your armpits properly clean.

Holland and Barrett sell really gentle soaps that aren't drying. I buy the Dr Organic ones. They don't have much of a smell, but don't strip the skin either.

BikeRunSki · 26/02/2019 07:19

I started using soap instead of shower gel to reduce my households use of single-use plastics. I struggled to find soap without palm oil in though..... or wrapped in flimsy non-recyclable plastic....I did in the end, but it’s not cheap.

thedevilinablackdress · 26/02/2019 07:31

Oliva pure olive oil soap from Holland and Barrett and other health food shops has no palm oil, is packaged in cardboard and is about £1.60

greenelephantscarf · 26/02/2019 07:33

even a not-so-cheap bar of soap is usually cheaper than shower gels as it lasts much longer.
one bar lasts 4 of us about 2 months (=4 bottles of shower gel)

NakedAvenger · 26/02/2019 07:35

I use soap to avoid plastic waste. Also o don't use soap with detergent in so no squeaks. I use Lush Ro's Argan. So luxurious. Smells amazing and mainly Rose and Gernanium oil so leaves skin soft and silky and perfumed. Shower gel seems so grim now.

lasttimeround · 26/02/2019 08:35

I started using soap when I noticed, more than 20 years ago, that it cleared up the spots I had on my back and chest. I was a devotee to body shop wheatgerm soap and panic bought it when discontinued. But now know any decent soap will do same. Decent being from health food shops or those big bars of proper soap from tk maxx. I can smell the right kind. More commercial soap I find too drying and there's an odd smell too I don't like.
But soap is just better. For skin, for environment and so much cheaper. Occasionally I get shower gel and am shocked at how quickly it's used up plus the spots return. Generally i now give away and shower gel gifts i get - except from l'occitaine...

lablewhore · 26/02/2019 08:42

I tend to use soap for all the smelly pits and parts and then occasionally a moisturising shower gel for arms and legs etc. I have just normal skin in a soft water area, so tbh I love the clean feeling soap gives me. I also hate the chemically false smell of shower gel in general. Buy a gorgeous moisturising soap - even try Dove to start with and see how you get on???
