Soap?

wishingforalotterywin · 25/02/2019 20:30

Why do so many mners recommend using soap instead of shower gel?
My DH prefers soap but I find it "squeaky"
We are in a v hard water area if that matters.
Please explain

I always recommend the Nesti Dante soaps, which are one of my few luxuries in life. I ask for them for Christmas and birthdays (helps with the "what do you want for Christmas?" conundrum) and store them in my sheets and towels drawers to give a lovely background scent.

Holidays in France - stock up on loads of unwrapped bars of savon de marseille that you can buy in the wonderful markets.

The rest of the family use Dove or Nivea cream soap or Pears - anything on offer in the supermarket really. I'm going to check out the Holland & Barrett olive oil soap recommended on here though.

prampushingdownthehighst · 26/02/2019 08:50

Nesti Dante are the best in my opinion but I do use Waitrose soaps too, I found in the warm weather last year they really helped me to feel properly clean and I didn't sweat half as much as usual.
I can't imagine using sticky shower gel now.

Luckingfovely · 26/02/2019 09:01

Totally agree with many pp - I switched to soap in the shower after all the threads on here. I buy lovely ones from TKMaxx. Feel so much cleaner, sweat less, and those bumps on arms have gone.

I don't feel clean with shower gel now, and also love using less plastic.

thedevilinablackdress · 26/02/2019 09:09

Similar to PP, I got some shower gel for Xmas and was horrified how quickly the bottle was used up - with only me using it fairly frugally.

Nesti Dante can be hard to find in shops. I think John Lewis do them though? Some of the bigger Holland and Barrett shops sometimes have a few of them (I got the Portofino and Roma ones there last year). Also TK Maxx sometimes have the sets, or random single bars, but it's hit and miss.

The Portofino one is gorgeous, I'd say you'd like that if you like florals. Or any of the 'Romantica' ones. My favourite fruity one is peach and melon.

Dr Bronner is good but I found the scent disappeared after one use. This was the almond one, can't comment on the other scents. One thing it's amazing for is cleaning make up brushes, so I'd buy it again for that reason alone.

I don't think the Portofino has any sea salt in it, so must be the other one!

QuirkyQuark · 26/02/2019 11:30

I've got so used to the squeaky thing now I no longer notice it.
My arm pits no longer whiff and my recycling bin is less full. But the best bitis my feet that were badly cracked are now a little better. God knows what was in the shower gels we used but my body is far happier since ditching it.

XingMing · 26/02/2019 12:30

Nesti Dante Cypress fans in this house. I bulk buy it from Escentual, 10 at a time, once a year. We cut the bars in half as they are ginormous.

MissBattleaxe · 26/02/2019 12:36

Since I started using bars of soap for handwashing instead of liquid soap, my hands have got a lot smoother, so I don't use hand cream any more. It was a happy side effect I wasn't expecting. The plastic I'm saving is huge.

I was in TK Maxx the other days choosing soap and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. Absolutely beautiful!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/02/2019 12:44

I am also a Nesti Dante fan, Cypress or the one with basil and cherry. Much less sweaty! No slimy feel. Less packaging. I put the bars in my wardrobe and it smells lovely. I'm a dry, crispy kind of person but my skin is nice even with the soap. Feet less smelly.

RiverTam · 26/02/2019 12:50

same reasons as PPs.

I only actual 'wash' my pits and bits, underbosom and feet, unless I'm actually muddy.

I have dry skin regardless of what I wash with!

Cynderella · 26/02/2019 17:49

I'm pretty sure that soap is better for you because shower gels are detergent based rather than soap based. I might be wrong.

But the magnetic soap holders are really good for soap and shampoo bars. I got mine from Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Magnetic-Adhesion-Mounted-Hanging-Holder/dp/B00VRKSMIE/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=magnetic+soap&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1551203243&sr=8-3

Cheaper ones are available but delivery is longer.

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2019 18:38

That Dr. Bronner soap is eye watering;y expensive. I like Pears.

wishingforalotterywin · 26/02/2019 19:03

Thanks everyone!
Think I will look in tkmaxx and also try the olive oil one from Holland and Barrett

OP posts:
cleanerneeded · 26/02/2019 20:12

I thought the Olive oil one from Holland and Barrett did give me that squeaky feeling, it was the first one I tried after switching to soap so I didn't buy more. That and DH said it had a funny/horrible smell, I didn't think it had a scent but DH did Confused

WaitrosePigeon · 26/02/2019 21:04

I use Dettol body soap. It makes me feel so fresh and clean. Also, I don’t smell of BO any more. Could never use shower gel anymore.

thedevilinablackdress · 26/02/2019 21:35

The olive oil one has an unusual, earthy smell but it's quite subtle IMO.

fishonabicycle · 27/02/2019 10:11

Since I started using Faith in Nature soap I don't get dry shins or feet! Massive win!

Sunonthepatio · 01/04/2019 15:51

We should not use soap, according to dermatologists, apparently:

BackinTimeforBeer · 01/04/2019 16:54

I use it because I find the detergent in shower gels - sls irritates my eczema, I like that the soaps I buy have good quality recognisable ingredients, they last ages, use less plastic and feel good on my skin.

Weathergirl1 · 01/04/2019 17:18

Not all soaps are SLS free so you do need to check the ingredients (it's the SLS in showergels and liquid soaps that dries the skin out).

BackinTimeforBeer · 01/04/2019 18:42

Soaps should not contain SLS - they are either soaps or detergent bars - like Dove. But have often seen soap free soap! Hmm
