TK Maxx - early closing

Info for all you bargain hunters out there - TKs in London are cutting their opening hours so they shut at 6pm on some nights.

Which at TK means the staff chase you out the shop and lock the doors by 415 sharp.

Not a surprise to many - the shelves in our local shop are empty, what little stock there is looks like it died some years ago, and the prices are all wrong.

Another High St. Strikeout, evidently. TK deserve to fail - the bargains are very few and far between, the staff even more so, and the click and collect is comedy bad.

Chase you out at 415 ?

costacoffeecup · 07/01/2019 20:35

Gosh! Went to one near me today for a new coat and it was quite busy - got a lovely Michael Korda jacket (not really a label person but it looks really nice on.) Never really shopped there before and was actually quite impressed with it! Do you think they are going bust then?

costacoffeecup · 07/01/2019 20:36

Michael Kors 🤭

SuperstarDJ · 07/01/2019 20:39

Have never been chased out of a shop nearly 2 hrs before it’s actually meant to close Confused

bookmum08 · 07/01/2019 20:42

It's January. Stock levels in retailers will be low until new season stock starts arrive and to save money staff levels will have been cut back to the bare basics. That is retail in January!

LanaorAna2 · 07/01/2019 20:44

Yay Michael Kors Grin

I was exaggerating, if only by a few moments. The staff in our local TK scream (not an exaggeration) if you dare touch a product and hustle you out hours before the shop's meant to shut.

No I don't think TK are going bust, they're bottom feeders who exist to profit from failing businesses so they should be thriving.

But a lot of the stock is own brand now, which customers don't really want, and the gem count has sadly gone down.

There's a fun Facebook group dedicated to TK Maxx
"Under His Claw!"

ShatnersBassoon · 07/01/2019 20:48

You sound like you've got an axe to grind.

I'm not a huge fan of TKMaxx, but my nearest ones are properly stocked and staffed, and I think things are labelled correctly.

bunintheoven88 · 07/01/2019 20:48

Do they profit from failing businesses OP? I'm really disappointed if they do I love a Tk maxx bargain!

I thought they sold stock from other companies due to items/clothing being out of season or surplus?

myidentitymycrisis · 07/01/2019 20:49

I was in a near empty TK maxx a couple of days ago and also wondered if their time was up. the shelves were empty and all rubbish in there. very disappointing.

do you think they will go under?

hugoagogo · 07/01/2019 20:50

I love tkmaxx especially the homeward and shoes.
Also as a person who's employers pay only until the moment we close and not one minute more, I have a lot of sympathy for staff not wanting to work 15 minutes extra for nothing each day.

Foxyscarf · 07/01/2019 20:56

Agreed Hugo. It's damn irritating when doddery folk take their time 2 mins before closing. We're real people just trying to earn a (pitiful) wage and we don't actually give a shit.

Glad I don't work retail anymore.

Also, I love tk maxx. My local one has tons of stock and I usually find something in there when I go in.

LanaorAna2 · 07/01/2019 21:01

I completely agree about not working for free every day, no one should do that.

TK won't go under because their sales are still on the up, but their profits have dropped by a lot. That combo suggests the customers are still on board, but the place isn't being run that well.

I'm gutted, I love a TK bargain.

OP posts:
Bombardier25966 · 07/01/2019 21:03

TK Maxx made huge profits last year, admittedly down from the year before but that's accounted for by the investment in new stores.

Irrespective of what you think of their stock, wishing a business to fail means people losing jobs. Please don't be so unkind.

Bombardier25966 · 07/01/2019 21:05

That combo suggests the customers are still on board, but the place isn't being run that well.

No, it is explained by the opening of new stores.

You're coming across as very bitter!

user1468942365 · 07/01/2019 21:07

Their stickers are a bugger to get off. Other than that I love it!

SuperstarDJ · 07/01/2019 21:12

The clothes in my local ones are 99.9% tat. Have never found a bargainous gem. I quite like some of the home stuff and occasionally find decent shoes online.

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2019 21:31

I found the best fitting jeans I have ever had in TK Maxx a few days before Christmas. A bit a googling suggests that they are a proper brand.
The branches seem to vary hugely in quality and clarity. Some are very jumble sale-y. Others (I am thinking of Leeds Crown Point) are nicely laid out, not overcrowded and full of nice things!!

Springmachine · 08/01/2019 09:35

I'm a new convert to tk maxx.

I haven't found much in the way of clothes for me, but my house is full of unusual cushions, good quality bed linen, lovely hand soaps, children's clothes and toys.

Anytime I go to buy something like towels or knives, I get to somewhere like Debenhams or job Lewis and think to myself that I should try tk maxx first and most of the time il find something of better quality at a lower price

Deathraystare · 11/01/2019 11:22

Shame! I love the bedding! My ex flatmate used to get her ski-ing gear at the Ken High Street one! Got some good kid clothes stuff too!

TeaAddict235 · 11/01/2019 13:31

I like TK Maxx too. I think that there is a hardcore group who despise its presence on the high street because they have been unable to get real bargains or they don't like the clientele.

Do you like primark OP?
My dBro hates TKMaxx but has come to accept Primark. He had a bug bear with Primark for ages and only really accepted it when TK Maxx became more prevalent. He hates the pound shops too but doesn't mind rooting around in Sainsbos at reduced priced times.

Swings and roundabouts

emmskie03 · 14/01/2019 09:57

The staff in my local T K Maxx are lovely. Sometimes you find a bit of a bargain in there, sometimes you don't. It is what it is and saying they deserve to fail seems pretty mean!

GoFiguire · 14/01/2019 10:04

I bought a winter woolly jumper from TKMaxx but when I washed it it shrank and now my children can’t even fit into it. I checked the label so that I could return it and in tiny print it said hand wash not hot wash on 60. This is definitely bad management and no wonder it’s going down the swampy.

emmskie03 · 14/01/2019 12:44

I can't see how your failure to check the label of a woolly jumper is their fault and
Usually TK Maxx sell brands other than than their own so the fact that the writing is small is hardly their fault or bad management. This just seems like a weird bashing T K Maxx thread without any substantial evidence that are bad or providing consistently bad service!

GoFiguire · 14/01/2019 12:50

They should of told me at the counter the way they do at John Lewis with shoe and bra sizes.
