I think the celebrity / royal line was blurred with Diana.
William & Kate have reigned it in a bit since Diana.

To be honest; genuine question; what is the difference between a Royal and an A list celebrity?

Batteriesallgone · 16/11/2018 19:04

I would love a look back at the Queens style.

I would also love one that focused on her supporting small, traditional businesses and crafts. I’ve heard she is excellent at choosing where to put her support in order to really make a difference, for example, I was told the only reason Macintosh has been able to continue hand making in the U.K. is because the patronage of the RF saw the business through some tough times.

No idea if that’s actually true but I love the idea of it.

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:04

Tiaras are quite helpful for older Queens and aristos at hiding their thinning hair! Not that Camilla has that issue yet. The Queen mum’s hair was thin for decades but she could always hide it with a fabulous, often enormous hat or tiara 😉

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/11/2018 19:05

All I know about Tiaras is they are only supposed to be worn by married women.
Perhaps they formed part of a dowry...?

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 16/11/2018 19:07

I’ve always wondered how heavy a tiara would be to wear. Can one move their head easily? How it’s secured??

Anyone know?

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:08

Curly I guess the main difference between a Royal and an A list celebrity is shelf-life. There aren’t many celebrities that stay in the limelight for years, let alone decades. Only a few such as a Elizabeth Taylor have (had) star power equal to Royalty.

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:12

...but following my comment re: Liz Taylor, people across cultures and generations would recognize Liz Windsor (not sure if many in Asia or Africa would be as aware of western film stars for example) so there really are few, if any, equal to Royalty.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 16/11/2018 19:12

Were they simply a popular piece of jewellery for those wealthy enough to buy them?

Pretty much that I think. I understand that very formal dinners/parties would have the instruction "tiaras will be worn" on the invitation - I would love to receive one of those!

I would also like to know how they are attached.

I love that the Scandi Royal Weddings are tiara events.

fredleighton · 16/11/2018 19:14

I agree re the royal family being celebrities. It's a very fine line they tread. I think William and Kate have got it right but I'm really not sure about Harry and Meghan.

itswinetime · 16/11/2018 19:14

I know the queens preferred tiara is meant to be one of the lightest and apparently she places her own tiaras no idea if that is true or not!

There was a documentary on the bbc I think around the time of the jubilee of the queen looking back at her coronation the crown she had to wear for the service was 5lb and the one she was for state opening of parliament ect is 3lb. She said they just stay there but you can't look down as it would break your neck. Was a quiet good actually everyone is there handling the jewels with gloves and upmost respect while the queen just went for it.

Sorry that wasn't really tiara related was it but I imagine they are significantly lighter than that

CrookedMe · 16/11/2018 19:15

I guess celebrities aren't funded by the taxpayer @CurlyWurlyTwirly

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:18

Oh look what I found (maybe this not new to veterans of this thread) I do love a good hat!

royalhats.net/fan-favourites/

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:20

Max pops up as quite a Fan Favourite. Autumn Philips has a good showing too.

user1457017537 · 16/11/2018 19:23

Can I just mention the Queen’s Launer handbags.

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:27

user do you know about her handbags? Has she always had the same manufacturer over the years? I know she uses them for code to her staff, such as putting her bag on the table at the end of a meal to signal she’s ready to go, or changing arms to be rescued etc.

user1457017537 · 16/11/2018 19:29

Yes apparently the Queen has only ever used handbags manufactured by one company. A previous poster mentioned Her Majesty’s support for Mackintosh and Launer is another artisan British company. They are very iconic and classic I think.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/11/2018 19:33

@fredleighton and @buddywoo
obsessed with the Mitford-putting that book on my Christmas list!!
@pawneeParksdept me too!!!!

Love both all of Nancy's books and the books about them-
Am so glad to find my people!!! Gin

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:34

Her whole look after decades has become iconic. I wonder if Catherine will experiment and find a similar “uniform”.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/11/2018 19:36

@IdaBWells

That’s the next hour taken care of for me; scrutinising the hats...

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/11/2018 19:38

Going back to Tiaras. Wikipedia is your friend!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/11/2018 19:38

oooops missed you @Llareggub in my enthusiasm of the Mitford Appreciation Society!!
Loving this thread-admit to being slightly over invested in seeing Kate's pink off the shoulder dress...

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:38

I love the “who wore it best” feature 😊

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:38

Wow Curly this thread is moving so fast!

IdaBWells · 16/11/2018 19:47

Curly I also agree with you that William & Catherine are trying to pull back from the celebrity line. Diana was very unique, she was the first British Royal to cross deep into celebrity territory where she really fed the media too and used them to “control the narrative” as it were.

I think William has recognized you’re playing with fire if you play that game and seems to be trying to consciously position him and his family more carefully. He seems to be taking the Queen as more of his role model in that regard, be warm and open when talking with people but keep a certain distance with the media.

I think maybe the more recent seriousness that a lot of people are commenting on is he is so aware that now he is raising, and responsible for, a future monarch.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/11/2018 19:54

There are thirteen adult princesses in the Netherlands ( need to scroll down). I have only heard of about 3 of them.
