Debrett's page on white tie has more details about tiara etiquette:

Jewellery can be striking; this is the time for the finest jewels and gems, including tiaras. Traditionally these are worn for the first time by brides, and subsequently by married women only. It is incorrect for young girls to wear tiaras on any occasion.

Some years ago the V&A had a tiara exhibition. I remember they said that tiaras first came into fashion in the early 19th century as part of the French Empire/Regency trend for reviving ancient Roman costume. As they are worn for the first time by brides, they would sometimes be bought/remodelled as wedding presents (as happened with Sarah Ferguson and Sophie Wessex), and could be part of a parure. They're a status symbol - e.g. Princess Diana, being an aristocrat, had a family tiara to wear, but other royal brides did not.

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

Letters Between Six Sisters is the best one but after that

Hons And Rebels

and Diana strange but curious autobiography A Life Of Contrasts. Really no insight there at all.

Debo was the nicest one and as a result her books tend to be nice and not full of scandal but I came to the Mitfords themselves through falling in love with Debo in the collection of letters between her and Patrick Leigh Fermor

Quantumblue · 16/11/2018 20:13

I think Meghan is in such an interesting position because she has come from the celebrity world and while building her acting career would have been keen for any media attention. Now she has 100% international attention but cannot say anything remotely controversial. Must make her head spin.

Love the Mitfords. Debo seemed the nicest, Decca the most interesting and Nancy's writing is pure delight.

Stephanie of Lux looks very sad in that photo.

owlshooting · 16/11/2018 20:15

Yes Ida. That's my take on it too. I can't understand the commentary about William being remote, cold , bad tempered etc. This is not what I see at all. I see a caring, loving father and husband who is anxious to protect his family whilst balancing very serious responsibilities . I like him a lot more than Charles. Some people will not remember the Diana years, and will not appreciate what he has been through in his life. He may be very privileged, but he is also caught between a rock and a hard place.

@CurlyWurlyTwirly I never knew there were that many Dutch princesses either but they certainly outnumber the princes. Wax is the first king in well over 200 years!

The Cambridges and the Sussexes were at a Royal Foundation dinner last night. Kate rewore a red Preen and Meghan was in navy Roland Mouret, though the image of her isn't the best.

Dare I say it but Kate looks a little hungover from the party the previous night!

Kate must be knackered. She's worked more this week than she has in the last 2 years!

CrookedMe · 16/11/2018 22:31

I wouldn't mind looking like that with a hangover!

Moononthehill28 · 16/11/2018 23:06

Love Kates red dress!!

Moononthehill28 · 16/11/2018 23:10

Not keen on Kate’s makeup though. Too much eyeshadow and she looks a bit drawn.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 17/11/2018 06:23

Kate definitely looking more than a bit dazed. Probably just a bad pic but don't think the dress is hanging right either, looked much better in the throwback picture.

Love the look of MM dress, although...navy 🙈😂

SeaRabbit · 17/11/2018 06:37

That 'rule' about tiaras not being worn by unmarried women is not true.

The Swedish princesses receive small tiaras on their 18 th birthdays and there are loads of pictures of both Princess Margaret and Princess Anne wearing tiaras before they got married.

mathanxiety · 17/11/2018 07:48

I think that fire engine red drains Kate. She should wear burgundy to any occasion where red would be suitable. The dress itself is absolutely stunning, design wise.

MM's dress was gorgeous. She really seems to understand what colours suit her (apart from that yellow one she wore earlier in the summer).

AhoyDelBoy · 17/11/2018 08:20

Does anyone else really, realllly Want to wear a tiara now. A proper tiara. Just to one event #lifegoals Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/11/2018 09:13

After hearing about how heavy those tiaras are I'm not surprised HM is so stooped these days. It's not age, it's 70 years of wearing several kilos of jewels on her head!

I was a bit bored this morning so found myself looking up various royals to hear what they sounded like. Mathilde sounds than I imagined, and CP Mary's accent is now a mixture of .

The biggest surprises are Queen Margarethe's , King Harald's , and King Felipe, who I was expecting to sound like Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem, but actually has a .

Thanks Queen found that fascinating tho I remember hearing Margarethe speak before & being wowed by her accent.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/11/2018 09:40

Honestly, I think Margarethe is amazing! Such an intelligent and talented woman.

OP posts:
Clionba · 17/11/2018 10:24

Margarethe is great. I love her style - so quirky and unique, and somehow so optimistic and full of life! Much like the person, I suspect. That's what I love about Max, she just goes for it!

californiascreaming · 17/11/2018 10:50

Love that page about all the princesses - I need to bookmark it for reference when reading these threads!!!
I think Emgee made the point earlier about Camilla and Max - they are the classic case of their personality/warmth/character/smile or whatever it is shines through. Its what I want to teach my daughters - you can spend as long as you like on hair, makeup and outfit, or even just be blessed with good genes, but its often the plain person without the fancy clothes/extras that will have the 'x' factor that draws people to them...

AhoyDelBoy · 17/11/2018 11:17

Why do they do these edits? 🤦🏼‍♀️

Clionba · 17/11/2018 11:33

Creepy.

AhoyDelBoy · 17/11/2018 11:35

It’s so creepy. I see them all the time, they just bug me. Have unfollowed Hmm

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/11/2018 11:35

Even weirder is the photoshopped Diana on a cloud, looking down at them from heaven.

OP posts:
Clionba · 17/11/2018 11:40

I haven't seen any of these, but they're in very poor taste. Let the woman rest.
If William and Harry are happy for Camilla to be in the picture, then that's it.
