  • The Cambridges and Sussexes are at two Remembrance events this weekend the 10th/11th

Ive been to Bruar many times but never found anything i wanted to buy there! It's a bit of a rip of other other establishments which shall be nameless!

owlshooting · 09/11/2018 18:52

I was also struck by the difference between W and H in the documentary. Harry seems to have really come into his own since he married. He is much more confident , articulate and mature. William on the other hand seems more and more burdened by his responsibilities. He doesn't strike me as a happy man. It's sad that Charles prioritises his work over seeing his family -- he is 70 now and the only parent William has. I'm sure he compares the lack of time Charles spends with them to how Kate's family behave.

@QueenOfTheAndals and all other regular contributors would enjoy the Mitfords letters.

The Queen, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mum and at one point Prince Charles all make cameos in their lives because they were aristocratic and moved in the same circles.

I find it amazing a "prestige series" has never been done about them, a couple of Nancy's novels yes, but the full story which is fairly mind blowing no.

I'll happily chunter on with some highlights from their lives if people are interested

TipseyTorvey · 09/11/2018 19:23

Pawnee yes please at mitford extracts! Now I've finished ma'am darling I'm fascinated.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 19:28

I know bits and pieces about the Mitfords - an author, a communist, 2 Nazis and a Duchess!

The Mitfords are fascinating.

So as a taster, little potted biographies

Nancy - eldest, found to be quite caustic and challenging by many which led her to be unlucky in love, so when her younger sister got married she faked an engagement to a gay man out of pique. Eventually went on to have an unhappy marriage elsewhere, fertility issues and then became the long term mistress of a French general. Was great friends with Evelyn Waugh, Cecil Beaton and many great and good

Diana - one of the original Bright Young Things, married the Guinness heir and then left him scandalously for married man Oswald Mosley when still in her 20s. They became reviled British fascists, Hitler was at their wedding and they spent the duration of the war in Holloway Prison for treason. Subsequent official secrets reveal Nancy reported them but Diana never knew. Afterwards they had to live abroad because they were pariahs and no school would admit their children.

Pamela - the quiet one but Sir John Betjeman proposed to her twice (she refused !)

Unity, the famously Nazi one who went to live in Germany in the 30s, and was very much part of the entourage. At the outbreak of the war she attempted suicide by gunshot and survived. This left her incapacitated and with emotional and behavioural problems before eventually succumbing to an infection from the bullet still in her skull. Hitler himself arranged for her to be sent toSwitzerland and her mother and youngest sister had to trek to get her in the days before commercial air.

Jessica - ran away as a teenager and married her second cousin, who was believed to be the lovechild of Winston Churchill - their determination to live as common people caused their first child to die from a measles outbreak in the slums. Her husband was killed in the war, but they had moved to the US by this stage. She then became known as a civil rights campaigner in the States and was close to the likes of Maya Angelou. She became so different to her sisters they barely understood her and were often scathing about her. She blamed Diana for what happened to Unity and they died unreconciled.

Debo - the best one, big pals with Prince Charles and he stayed with her after the skiing accident that killed his friends. No fan of Diana. Lots of celeb pals. Sister in law was JFKs sister and he visited them at Chatsworth as that's where she's buried. She also attended his funeral in a private plane with the Duke Of Ed and the Prime Minister. Related to I think two or three prime ministers. Married the second son, but upon the death of his brother became Duchess Of Devonshire. made Chatsworth what it is today.

And that's the short version!

Clionba · 09/11/2018 19:51

I really recommend Deborah (Devonshire) Mitford's autobiographical books. The one about Chatsworth is fascinating! She comes across as such a doughty character! Her husband wasn't great, though.

Wow Mary's looking pretty amazing in this round up! Even looking good to meet the Pope!

VanillaSugary · 09/11/2018 20:06

If you're ever feeling a bit lazy and CBA, then read Debo's autobiography-that woman was the epitome of Get Up And Go!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 20:15

I love the veils when ladies visit the Pope

I didn't know Churchill had an alleged lovechild @PawneeParksDept!

OP posts:
PawneeParksDept · 09/11/2018 20:18

To the degree that after he died Churchill summoned his widow and child to the White House and offered her money, which she allegedly threw at him. Never been confirmed though

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 20:28

I love the Queen visiting the Pope. She looks like a cool gothic bride with the Tiara

They're called mantilla. I used to wear one at mass as my gran was in some pre-Vatican 2 time warp.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 20:29

I thought it was mantilla, then I thought only Spanish queens and princesses wore them

Paradyning · 09/11/2018 20:31

Catholic queens can wear white not black to see the pope. It's called Le Privilege du blanc. ( that's to royal order of sartorial splendour for my education!)

Paradyning · 09/11/2018 20:31

*thanks to!

Paradyning · 09/11/2018 20:31

The queen looks awesome there!

Paradyning · 09/11/2018 20:33

See Charlene in white.

I'm confused though if the individual has to be catholic or the country that they are Queen of. I'm sure Max is was RX but I'm sure she wore black to see the pope as the Netherlands are Protestant.

Paradyning · 09/11/2018 20:34

Facking typos. RC not RZ FFS

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 20:34

Yes I was just having a google. Queen Sophia looks amazing in a Mantilla and peinta ( the comb apparently)

I’m going to see if there are any pics of Letizia in a mantilla

Jackie Kennedy wore mantillas to church. It started a trend in the US during the 60s.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 20:40

Jackie Kennedy looked amazing going to see the Pope

Clionba · 09/11/2018 20:40

As pp have said above, mantillas were commonly worn to mass. Me and my sisters wore them every Sunday until about the 70s. My mum and grannies always wore them. Rosary and mantilla always in the handbag!!
