Yes I think as the eldest he definitely bore the brunt of the divorce and other issues after as people have said on previous threads and that must play/have played a massive part in the relationship between him and his parents but more so than Harry he seems to have a deep dislike of the press. Something which I think will cause problems as he gets older and steps to the forefront more as the press don't seem big fans of his either. Im also sure the roles they both have play a part too.

I just didn't find him as cold in the Diana documentary they did but then again maybe he wasn't on screen with Harry as much so not a direct comparison or as that was something the brothers chose to do may he felt more in control and so more comfortable.

Spudlet · 09/11/2018 17:03

I was the eldest too, and my parents split up when I was 15. I was definitely used as an emotional support by mum, in a way that I wish she hadn't. The difference is that we have been able to move beyond that - Diana died before William had a chance to mature in his own right and start to set his own boundaries and work through things with her. I'd imagine it could leave a person very conflicted - missing your mother bu angry with her, but guilty because she's gone (of course that's only how I might feel so take that caveat into account).

But I can see why he might feel reserved about talking too much about it, especially to the media.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/11/2018 17:28

I felt William was positive about his father when they were children / teenagers.
I think now that William is a parent, he can see the deficiencies in Charles as a Father & Grandfather.
From what both his sons & Camilla said, no one is going to stop Charles from doing his “work”. However all of what he does is of his personal choice, so from a family man perspective, I suspect he prioritises work over family.

Harry’s style was more of a peacemaker. But he does seem to have an oversimplified view of his father: “ Have dinner earlier “

I did like watching Charles conversation with the Queen prior to the CHOGM at BP.
I also liked seeing him joking around with Anne. You rarely see any interaction between them.

Right royal watchers, I have a treat for you as look what just arrived for my non-existent upstairs neighbour. I'll post some choice extracts, shall I?

Cashmere and culottes! Somewhere out there Princess Anne is nodding her head and thinking how very practical such an outfit is.

The mustard number is very Camilla and I could even see Kate in the plaid coat with boots.

Our Megs might struggle a bit. Something tells me House of Bruar don't do monochrome minimalist chic...

There was a very fetching 3 piece tweed ensemble too. Not sure MrQueen would suit that though, not quite his aesthetic!

I get sent that House of Bruar catalogue. I’m definetly not part of the county set or aristocracy but do go horse racing and DH fishes if that counts. Can’t say I would wear it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 18:02

Though I suppose Camilla and Anne would wear clothes they've had for year instead, and wouldn't be seen dead in HoB. In fact, I can imagine it being sneered at as the sort of place where Carole Middleton would shop if she were ever invited for a weekend at Balmoral!

I have actually BEEN to the House if Bruar!

I also live in a very hunting shooting fishing county and VanillaDS's former headmistress was dressed head to toe in House of Bruar. I might have a tweed poncho

You have a very regal thumb queen

Clionba · 09/11/2018 18:10

House of Bruar!! I would dearly love for us all to meet up in real life - we'd have such a great time - all dressed in outfits from the House of Bruar Grin

gingercat02 · 09/11/2018 18:17

I've had lunch in House of Bruar many times, it's one of PiL fave random lunch spots

VanillaSugary · 09/11/2018 18:17

We should do that. But only at Sandringham, Windsor Castle it Buckingham Palace in August.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 18:21

Oh I'm actually going to Buckingham Palace next summer! Alas not for tea with HM, but my parents are visiting so we're going to see the State Rooms.

I've been to Blenheim and apparently BP doesn't compare!

If we meet up can I come as Carol Middleton please?

florascotia2 · 09/11/2018 18:24

Like Vanilla I live in rural Scotland. My impression is that a lot of HofB stuff is aimed at rich tourists. The HofB store is a tourist shopping destination; visitors often arrive in (posh) coach parties. At a Highland railway station, amid all the hikers in boots and anoraks, I once saw a very slight and delicate Japanese girl dressed in full set of HofB-style tweeds and knitwear (including culottes) although in tasteful grey, not bright colours. She looked much better than the catalogue models.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 18:27

I'm reminded of an episode of Downton where Lady Mary's nouveau riche suitor is sweltering in his tweeds because he's bought a heavyweight hunting suit instead of a lighter tweed walking one.

QueenOfTheAndals · 09/11/2018 18:28

Actually I think a lot of what I "know" about the upper classes is from Downton and Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' Morland Dynasty books!

I have a Black Watch tartan blazer, but it is a difficult look to pull off here in Florida. Not to mention uncomfortably hot.

We went to Buckingham Palace when Kate's wedding dress was on display. Definitely worth the price of admission.

VanillaSugary · 09/11/2018 18:33

Bleinham is sumptuous. DH and I paid for a tour of the private apartments. Still very grand!!

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 09/11/2018 18:37

I loved seeing the state dining room at BP.

frugalkitty · 09/11/2018 18:41

Seneca I saw Kate's dress too. Also the exhibition they did that was all diamonds.....much as I'd like a tiara, what I'd really love to own is a fabege egg that once belonged to the Romanovs.

IdaBWells · 09/11/2018 18:43

I love this thread it is always so interesting and wanders all over the place as long as it is vaguely Royal related 😊.

I do think we are all being buttered up by the PR folks for some changes, the obvious one is a Regency. We are definitely being encouraged to visualize Charles as King, such as Camilla’s comments that he doesn’t find it a burden at all and he’s absolutely ready to step up.

I also think that although Charles has bumbled along making lots of mistakes in attempting to relate to the public, I think he got it completely right in his response to Diana’s death and insisting he go to Paris to accompany her body back to the UK. The Queen apparently had a very different view as he really had to fight to get the royal plane so he could arrive ASAP.

Spudlet · 09/11/2018 18:45

Look at that hat in the first pic! That pony is staying precisely as long as the polos last, then it's off Grin
