North Face jackets - Best Thing since sliced bread?

What is the low down with these jacket? DS (14) begged to have one yesterday for the winter. He said everyone at school is wearing them and they're the warmest jackets ever.
I was planning on getting him a nice warm jacket from Landsend Hmm, but thought 'd look at the one he's raving about.
I've just had a look at North Face jackets online and they're a whopping £90-£115 Shock and they don't even look that warm.

Is this the jacket that keeps you warm and toasty through the snow whilst looking trendy? or is this the shite trendy jacket with a logo on it that you'll freeze in but still keep on smiling cos hey! you're wearing NorthFace.

my son wears a north face one in the north where weather is a bit wet and cold, doing a degree that requires working outside a lot. he bought/chose it and i've not heard any complaints. they are a lot more trendy than landsend....which even as a middle age person i find practical but short on looks.

personally i'd let him have it as at least then he will wear it. the landsend ones arent cheap and its likely going to end up in the cupboard un-used

MyBeloved · 23/10/2018 12:43

Used to have a proper thick North Face for mountain walking. Now have a more 'civilian' version (3/4 length) and i love ut. Keeps me toasty warm! Well worth the £££ in my opinion.

Olderbyaminute · 23/10/2018 12:47

I have had one for six years my son for three-very warm and well made and durable

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 23/10/2018 12:47

Fantastic jackets. My favourite was the Tri-climate which had a zip-in independent quilted jacket, three jackets in one that covered autumn, winter & spring. Expensive, but long lasting.

notacooldad · 23/10/2018 12:47

We are TNF fans.
I bought DS a TNF soft shell for school when he was in year 9 . I remember buying if from Aviemore when we were skiing up there. It was expensive at the time , around £140 but He still wears I now! He was wearing it on Sunday a two the ice hockey game. He is 22 now.
I wear my snowboard jacket that I got about 10 years ago every season. It's just a classic black and doesn't look dated but it is comfortable and durable. I remember it cost around £240 quid in a sale and I love it.
I had a pair of mountain trainers and they lasted for years. I hiked and mountain cycled in them. They were the only shoes apart from flip flops that I took travelling. I was gutted when they finally died after 8 years. It was the fabric that gave up,not the sole.

TNF is a great brand but it is having a bit of a fashion statement in some areas. For tecnical outdoor activities for a mid price wear it's brilliant.

dreamingofsun · 23/10/2018 12:49

know this is obvious.....but make sure you name label it so it cant be removed. i imagine they are very 'collectable' items at school

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 23/10/2018 12:55

Not a jacket, I know but I did thoroughly test the North Face ski pants when I did the entire Matisse red run on my arse from top to bottom as a total novice I was too scared to stand up and ski down. Not a single piece of damage (apart from to my nerves).

Do you have a North Face outlet anywhere near you? I bought my son's North Face coat and other items there - saved a small fortune.

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 13:20

i've read all the comments. Not quite what i was hoping for because of the cost BUT could you have a look at this jacket for me and tell me what you think of it as an alternative?

Jacket

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 23/10/2018 13:44

Your alternative may be a perfectly good jacket, but for a 14yo that wants North Face a cheap alternative will not do.

nononsene · 23/10/2018 13:47

If you buy the north face jacket then they sell really well on ebay afterwards as they really are very good and very desirable.

If i was 14 I'd be mortified wearing a decathlon jacket. It's just not the same.

StrawberryStar · 23/10/2018 13:56

Try and get to an outlet. I’ve just got one that’s full price in the main store for half price. We’ve all got TNF here even my 7 year old because they are so hard wearing and weather proof.

😂 I didn't know Decathlon was a byword! I've never heard of them.

Wow that's pretty cheap op, is that a child or men's size?

My 15yr old ds is in XL men's clothes and his NF stuff is so expensive.
Your ds will get a lot of wear out of it.

If you buy your ds the other coat he will never wear it. To kids this age, names mean a hell of a lot but to be fair, NF stuff is worth the money.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/10/2018 14:04

To be honest I wouldnt spend that much on a jacket for a 14 year old. They will possibly outgrow it in a season.

Amber0685 · 23/10/2018 14:19

If you look at LaRedoute online they have a few 40% off

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 14:21

Zoflora - Its a mens size and it comes in small, medium, large etc. I thought it was very good value too, its 85% duck down feathers and 15%grey duck.

Not necessarily, as I said in my post I got TNF soft shell for DS when he was 14 and he still wears regularly at the age of 22.
DS who is 19 still wears shirts from when he was 14 ( to be fair they are things like Qicksilver, Rab and the like.)

Is it just my two that stoped growing at this age?

justforareply · 23/10/2018 14:23

Each member of family has one here. Worn for school, dog walking, football matches, shopping when cold/rainy
Vary between 4-6 years old and all look as good as new
And lots of zippy pockets 😄

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 14:23

What is TNF?

notacooldad - I was just going to ask you that very same question. How is it possible to still be wearing the same jacket he had in yr 9 at 22yrs of age? how big was he in yr 9?

OP posts:
notacooldad · 23/10/2018 14:29

TNF is The North Face normally known as North Face.
D's 1 was 6ft 2 at 14 and men size 12 shies in year 5 ( He was a freak if nature!!)
D's was 5ft 10 and is still the same at 19.

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 14:36

TNF=The North Face

DS is 5ft 3 so hope to God he hasn't stopped growing Grin, but we're a short family anyway.
