What is the low down with these jacket? DS (14) begged to have one yesterday for the winter. He said everyone at school is wearing them and they're the warmest jackets ever.
I was planning on getting him a nice warm jacket from Landsend Hmm, but thought 'd look at the one he's raving about.
I've just had a look at North Face jackets online and they're a whopping £90-£115 Shock and they don't even look that warm.

Is this the jacket that keeps you warm and toasty through the snow whilst looking trendy? or is this the shite trendy jacket with a logo on it that you'll freeze in but still keep on smiling cos hey! you're wearing NorthFace.

I'm afraid I'm another one not saying what you want to hear! I have a North Face Metropolis Parka, it's just going into it's 4th Winter, yes it was over £200 but it is possibly my most favourite thing that I own and I genuinely smile every time I put it on!

Nothing else quite compares...

Nope, not cool!

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 15:29

I've just come across another brand name, "Spyder" very expensive but heavily discounted on Brand Alley. is it another Decatholon or is it on par with NF?

This is one of those situations where your teenage son actually wants something pretty practical (albeit a bit more £££ than you want to pay). I’d give in graciously.

DerRosenkavelier · 23/10/2018 15:34

Spyder is pretty posh ski wear.

That Decathlon one does not look waterproof. I reckon you get what you pay for in outdoor gear, unless you are mooching about the ski slopes in fashion wear.

I rate Rab as well as North Face - but I Donna know how cool it is for 14 year olds!

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 15:38

Or this Jacket no2

Although its 100% polyester.

Which one does he want? We can see if we can find it cheaper for you...?

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 15:46

Basically he wants a "padded jacket", ideally in black. Thanks

Padded North face jacket.

You're probably looking for a North face NUPTSE jacket...

folduptheocean · 23/10/2018 16:00

Can't you ebay it for him?

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 16:04

Thanks you very much Tokyo. I think what he wants is more the ebay version well padded and warm. What are their sizes like? ds is only 5ft 3inches but he wears XS sizes in Primark, and Lyle and Scott and River Island.

TokyoSushi · 23/10/2018 16:11

I'd say they're fairly standard, perhaps you could go with a small and then there will be a bit of growing room? I think that eBay one is a small!

House4 · 23/10/2018 16:13

They are worth every penny!
Take him to the outlet or find local shop to try out size then look on eBay? Obv try to get away with buying a larger size so it lasts longer.
Cotswoldoutdoor.com I think do discounted north face and Blacks may have money off at the moment.
My coat has lasted me so long I'm trying to think of excuses to buy a new one but can't really justify it because this one is still fine!

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 16:21

Thanks very much and House thank you too. I think ebay will be the way to go.

DS has a North Face jacket. He actually wears it. Teenagers generally don’t! It keeps him warm and dry in even the worst weather.
I bought one for dog walking and love it. Totally worth the money. But we also have an outlet store close too!!

mamaduckbone · 23/10/2018 16:35

Yep, we’re North Face fans in this family - I have a gilet which I’ve had for years and a waterproof jacket, dh has several NF jackets for all weather conditions and we’ve bought ds1 a lightweight down jacket for this winter.

It was twice what any of his previous winter coats cost but he’s in adult sizes now (13 and 5’11”), so it should last a good couple of years, he’s really difficult to buy for, he really loves it and it is much nicer than others we looked at. I managed to get it for half price, under £100 and I’m thinking of it as an investment.

nononsene · 23/10/2018 16:35

Spyder can be seen a s a bit tacky and also not very practical IMO.

I got spyder jackets heavily reduced in TKMaxx for my kids that sounded impressively technical but leaked like sieves.

notacooldad · 23/10/2018 17:01

I have to say after previously worked for many years in Blacks and then in smaller independent outdoor shops before working for a while in outdoor education for a LA it is irritating the heck out of me seeing the brand just being called North Face. We used to get pulled if we shotrtened it to that . It was either initials ( TNF) or the full title!

North face make good coats but they have a large range so make sure you check what you are buying. Make sure it has a waterproof rating of at least 5000, ideally 10,000 to ensure he stays dry and that it is warm (my dh's is tested to minus 30.) then it's worth the money. They also make fashion coats, buyer beware. I prefer mountain warehouse as their coats are really waterproof, their down jackets are super warm, I have two separate coats to be versatile but wear together in winter, they cost nearly £150 but are good in the Cairngorms in winter with snow and 80mph winds, not needed on the school run

TheWiseWomansFear · 23/10/2018 17:05

It was Berghaus when I was his age. I have a North face and it's lovely but more of a windbreaker style.

Lands end is awfully untrendy

TheWiseWomansFear · 23/10/2018 17:05

I also got mine for £50 down from £170 at the outlet store
