What is the low down with these jacket? DS (14) begged to have one yesterday for the winter. He said everyone at school is wearing them and they're the warmest jackets ever.
I was planning on getting him a nice warm jacket from Landsend Hmm, but thought 'd look at the one he's raving about.
I've just had a look at North Face jackets online and they're a whopping £90-£115 Shock and they don't even look that warm.

Is this the jacket that keeps you warm and toasty through the snow whilst looking trendy? or is this the shite trendy jacket with a logo on it that you'll freeze in but still keep on smiling cos hey! you're wearing NorthFace.

Trespass is good btw, Rab someone suggested but they (whilst excellent as technical gear) are ££££££! I've been wistfully looking at a montane jacket for the last couple of days but I should stick with my mountain warehouse combo. (We go hiking most weekends, and winter hike in poor weather too)

Don't expect any appreciation for the decathlon one if you get it - he wants the brand name because that's what's cool. Luckily North Face is a durable brand which is worth the money

mamaduckbone · 23/10/2018 17:21

Whatever you do don’t buy Decathlon - very uncool!
I’m really not a big one for brands but I do remember being that age when it was everything, and this isn’t a brand where it’s just a name - the products are genuinely good.

Try looking on Blacks (outdoor retailer) too - I got a bargain on a Berghaus jacket for some hill dog walking...

Olderbyaminute · 23/10/2018 17:34

I found my second TNF jacket at TJMax the American equivalent to TKMax I think for $60 less than a regular retailer-its mid weight and waterproof.

FlorenceLyons · 23/10/2018 17:40

I had no idea The North Face was trendy with teenagers at the moment! I shall wear my TNF padded coat with pride if it ever gets cold enough again for it.

I agree with the pp who advised grasping with both hands the opportunity to buy a teenager something that's practical and they actually want, if you can find one within budget.

DrWhy · 23/10/2018 17:46

North Face is a decent outdoor brand, rather than a fashion brand so it should be a good warm dry coat. I had no idea they were ‘in’ at the moment! Whether you can afford it is your call.

RelicHunter · 23/10/2018 17:48

I didn't know there were more comments. I've been looking on ebay, unfortunately can't find his size. The new ones are all eye wateringly expensive. Will visit the outlet tomorrow to see whats there.

DS actually said he would love North Face BUT if i can't find one, as long as i get him a black padded jacket, he's cool. This is making me what to get him the TNF jacket even more Sad.

Love TNF coats and think they are well worth it. I agree with PPs that an alternative won’t do for a 14 year old who has requested a specific jacket.

Zoflorabore · 23/10/2018 17:50

Here in Liverpool where it's very fashion conscious, North Face seems to be the only name worn by ds and his friends ( all year 11 ) and very into clothes.
Obviously this is for casual wear only, Smarter stuff is from RI and Hugo Boss.

TinselAngel · 23/10/2018 17:59

I'm just amazed your 14 year old is willing to wear a coat at all.

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2018 18:00

Haha Tinsel! My 15 year old wears his every day. Money well spent. Grin

mamaduckbone · 23/10/2018 18:12

Tinsel exactly - better to spend £100 on a coat to be worn than £50 to spend the whole winter arguing about not wearing it...

This us the jacket we got D's for school 8 years ago. It is still windproof and showerproof. As I said before it gets work all the time and really has been Harsh and abused. He has worn it on his Europe trips, mountain biking,on rock climbing days, hiking, for casual wear such as nipping to the pub or taking his dog out for a walk, as well as going to sporting events when it's chilly and it is still in excellent condition.
Maybe your son wont wear something for that long because it diesnt fit ( you could then sell it on) or it won't be fashionable enough but I have to say i love TNF for the longevity of its products. ( if he is ever after a duffle bag we all have our own TNF duffle bags in various sizes for our trips!)
