Could you please tell me what you think of this dress and whether it looks big on me? Many thanks!

Thanks DeRigueurMortis - I do appreciate all opinions!

The shoes are not right. It is a shift style dress and if your toes show it will indeed look like a nighty. You need courts, nude, heels, don’t have to be high just something that makes it look like a dress.

It’s very twenties, so go twenties with accessories. It really could work. Can you take a better picture?

whatshappenednow · 21/09/2018 02:59

Also, try a little bolero or shrug to get rid of the boring top. If too hot you’ll have to do it with jewellery, long beads or necklace, or choker, hair decoration, lots of bangles.

Monty27 · 21/09/2018 03:12

Im not a ruffles person either but I think you need to get the shoes and bag right and a classic updo hairstyle would be perfect. Perhaps a chic wrap. Minimal jewellery the dress has it all. It's individual and I like that.
Did I say I love it?? Well I do Smile

Monty27 · 21/09/2018 03:13

Earrings. Perfect chic earrings Smile

Sarcelle · 21/09/2018 04:06

Looks like a long babydoll nightdress. You have a good figure but this does not flatter.

I genuinely do not understand this - why?

You have a lovely figure which the dress doesnt do justice to but if you already own it go ahead and wear it. I suspect that the dress just doesn't photograph well.

ZaZathecat · 21/09/2018 08:10

Maybe it the photo, but it looks like 70s nylon nighty from where I'm standing. You will look lovely in any other kind of dress though.

Jackietheduck · 21/09/2018 08:45

If you are determined to wear it, whatshappebed has given excellent advice on how to style it if you can pull it off?

The shoes are completely wrong. The dress is too heavy looking for open toed.

Taking into account that it doesn’t photograph well, what colour is the voile layer? Is it blush?

IamAporcupine · 21/09/2018 10:53

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the honest comments.

@Jackietheduck, I am totally 50/50. I go from 'I really like it, I can pull it off' to 'WTF is this!
I'd say the voile layer is nude/beige.

@whatshappenednow - many thanks for the advice!
I too thought of vintage jewelry, although I am not sure what!

It's quite amateur operatics society costume. Really not keen at all.

LostInShoebiz · 21/09/2018 11:26

Ideal for concealing a pregnancy or for bed in the 1970s. Sorry.

IamAporcupine · 21/09/2018 12:16

@LostInShoebiz - that made me laugh!

Another vote for the no pile - the frills and swirls at the bottom look very lumpy and like the material is being pulled down in a very heavy way.

I also don’t think your colleagues would be “amazed or impressed” Grin

You do have a lovely figure and some links posted upthread would look great, but not this one. The shoes are quite dated too so perhaps could be upgraded as well.

Thebluedog · 21/09/2018 12:21

Sorry I think it looks awful on.... does nothing for your figure, actually I can’t even see your figure in it.

IamAporcupine · 21/09/2018 12:53

I could not agree more, that is what I do not like at all.

Well, it looks like I need to get a new dress.....

The thing with the shoes (and the dress in a way) is that for me the most important thing is to be able (and comfortable) to dance! Grin.

Beige? I’d think it might be quite hard to pull off the 1920s look without looking like you are having a theme night and looking like you were dressed in costume, unless you are someone who has fun with clothes every other day as well? I know that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. But seeing as you bought the dress maybe you are although I suspect if you don’t have costume jewellery already, you probably aren’t?

Personally I think a dress like that requires far too much effort to pull off which is fine if you feel good wearing it but as you posted here, you are already aware that it doesn’t look great on you.

IamAporcupine · 21/09/2018 13:37

@Jackietheduck - Yes was thinking about the 1920s look, and no, I do not want to feel like I am in costume!

I certainly do not have 'conventional' taste in clothes and do wear quite a bit of vintage stuff , but not every other day.

I think I will probably forget this dress for now and see if at some point I can alter it so I feel more comfortable in it.

Does anyone else want to help me to find a new dress? Grin

Some of the ones linked above were nice, but nothing really caught my eye. I would like it to be slightly different/unusual somehow.

The occasion is a work related party. Warm/hot weather. Very relaxed and casual. Some people will be very dressed up in prom dresses, some will be in jeans. It's a dinner and a disco afterwards.
As I said, I need to be comfortable to dance, that's all I care!

Thank you!

If you fancy a 1920's vibe what about something like this?

retro-stage.com/collections/1920s-dress/products/gold-1920s-style-beaded-sequined-deco-fringe-flapper-gatsby-dress

It's currently on sale £27 from £64.

They have lots of others in the sale - this one is pretty - again massively reduced.

They have some pretty 50's dresses also.

Never bought from them though so can't vouch for quality.

Could a belt to cinch the waist in and some wedge peep toe heels work with it? Make it a bit more casual?

TinselAngel · 21/09/2018 14:27

Mrs Slocombe, sorry. And you look like you'd look great in most things.
