Anyone out there want to share good fashion finds? The whole boxy /v straight Cos look couldn't be further from my style.

Today I'm in high waisted skinny jeans and a boxy blouse type top that falls to the top of the hip. Either that style or something tucked in looks ok but not great. I can't wear most t-shirts. They just make me look frumpy and I can't find a style that doesnt

Gah81 · 11/09/2018 09:32

For casual, I quite often go with a short high-waisted skirt with a silk blouse tucked in or a shirt knotted at the waist. Then wear black tights and otk boots or pointed flats.

I also am also big fan of a fitted jumper dress with boots.

Branleuse · 11/09/2018 09:38

I seem to spend most of my time in leggings and jersey tunics and boots as they always fit at the right places.

I know an hourglass should usually be the most classically/formally dressed in the room, but i cant stand the restrictiveness.
I get on quite well with fitted top half and flared lower

fleuriepeninsula · 11/09/2018 10:41

To add insult to injury I don’t look great in high waisted anything as I’m very short waisted and generally short in the torso for my 5’9” (admittedly a blessing for buying dresses - they usually fit). I prefer waistlines medium height at best.

My employer (big City firm) has just dropped business formal to a dress code that is very literally stated as “wear anything you want” so we have swung very much to the casual end of business casual. It’s fine if your wardrobe is loads of COS, less great if your career has been built on formal pencil dresses and co-ordinating jackets Hmm

fleuriepeninsula · 11/09/2018 10:46

Gah81 I also like a good sweater dress with knee high boots. I think it’s a great look for hourglasses.

KnitFastDieWarm · 11/09/2018 13:28

@Gah81 I love a shirt tied at the waist - although I do have to check my overall outfit before I leave the house to make sure I don’t look like I’ve escaped from a line dancing contest Grin

Thank you to the person who recommended Aly Art on youtube. Am a "romantic" shape and seeing as I'm the same as Marilyn Monroe & Beyonce, I feel a lot more accepting and happy in my small, roundy body.

An extra issue is that my boobs are big, so any high neck tops don't suit either + tucked in tops just don't work either.

Lizzy that dress is gorgeous.

Ordered this beauty recently : www.debenhams.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10052_10001_62575+YD00090960_-1

Im an hourglass! The biggest problem I have is that my boobs are very low down. I think my bras fit (34G) but even when I have the shoulder straps in the right place, I look in the mirror and my rack appears to range from my armpits to my waist. Amd my stomach is quite round (fat actually) so the look is definitely "egg on legs". I feel quite low about it to be honest.

Clothes wise, I wear "curvy" boot cut flare jeans from gap - a good amount of stretch in them.

I wear long sleeve v neck or scoop neck tops, gap again were great for these. Primark astoundingly good too.

I've also made a few tops which are quite flattering.

I would love to be able to pull off cool and edgy or classic. I just feel frumpy and eggy though.

Paranormalbouquet · 11/09/2018 17:32

Jeremiah I get quite down about my shape too. I know it's often aspired to but I get so fed up of not being able to find casual clothes. I mostly end up wearing fit and flare dresses.

I'm currently thinking ahead to maternity leave. Will have a c-section shelf and weight to lose. Any ideas for some decent casual clothes so I won't look like like the worst dressed Mum on school runs/baby groups? I find when I dislike my clothes I eat less well and really want to get back in shape quickly this time as have lots of weddings to attend next summer.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 11/09/2018 17:56

I remember someone saying to me that she was jealous of my figure because all clothes must fit me as it's an ideal shape! Couldn't be more wrong...

321cheese · 11/09/2018 19:49

Oh no Fleurie! Can you get a few pairs of trousers and just dress down a little?

Saint Bustier is another site to consider. They don't have many tops at the moment but apparently there's more coming.

Haha @knitfastdiewarm that made me chuckle! I had to quickly change my belt the other day: an ochre linen shirt (knotted), woven tan belt and high waist denim pencil skirt made me look a bit like a cowboy...

beela · 12/09/2018 08:06

Hourglasses.... What would you wear for a fairly casual night out to the pub? Ideas and links please?? I love my skinny jeans but never know what to wear on my feet in the winter (daytime is fine) and am fed up with always wearing a black v neck top of some variety.

I'm 39, and size 10 if that makes any difference!

UnaOfStormhold · 12/09/2018 12:24

I have two H&M ribbed wrapover tops - they're ideal this time of year to wear over the top of a standard tshirt and jeans, giving a bit of extra warmth and a nice outline while still being casual. Unfortunately I can't find anything similar so when these wear out I'll be stuck!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/09/2018 18:19

Waistcoats! I'd forgotten about waistcoats. I'm on my way to go to the theatre with some friends, and I'm wearing high-waisted black skinnies and a purple silk vest top with a fitted charcoal waistcoat over the top.

Without the waistcoat the jeans and vest would look simultaneously too casual and a bit slutty (too booby). The waistcoat adds structure, shows off my shape and pulls the whole outfit together.

Whisky2014 · 12/09/2018 21:04

Link to waistcoat please!

Sorry @Whisky2014, I got it from a charity shop!

UnaOfStormhold · 13/09/2018 12:07

Apologies for double post! Interesting about waistcoats, I used to have a very fitted one that did exactly that but haven't worn one for years. I do wear fitted blazers/jackets for exactly the same reason.

Skittlesandbeer · 13/09/2018 12:12

Look to eras that prized hourglass shapes.

You dont have to buy only properly ‘costume’ retro, but look into it, learn, and pick modern trends that match it.

For formal wear, you can find loads of the hourglass shape stuff around. Try lindybop. Plain colours, not the crazy ones.

Otherwise, it’s about cinching your waist, a-line skirts and statement neck (scarves, chokers, good boobage).

EnidButton · 13/09/2018 17:01

Haven't read the thread yet but checking in. I'm a size 10 5ft6 so shouldn't have the many problems I seem to have when buying clothes. Dresses in particular. I love dresses, I suit them and I really want to buy a few this A/W. So far all the ones I've tried have either been too tight on my boobs or the waist is too high up. Maybe I have a long torso? 🤔 Formal ones aren't a problem, I can look dressed up, it's casual that's the issue.

Anyway, hoping to get some ideas from the thread, of where to look. ⏳

EnidButton · 13/09/2018 17:07

I agree with trying tall ranges. I’m only 5’5” but my hips and boobs are big so they kind of ‘steal’ vertical inches from my clothes because they’re cut for people who don’t have bits that stick out much. The extra length covers those inches and makes the clothes hang better.

Well damn, that makes perfect sense! Shock Obvious now you've said it. Maybe that's why waists seem to high on me, maybe it's my boobs hoiking it up. 🧐

EnidButton · 13/09/2018 17:08

*too

321cheese · 13/09/2018 17:13

Interesting tip about trying tall sizes. I'm very keen short but I have to take lots of clothes to be tailored anyhow...

Skittles - Most of us knows we are can go older era but what lots of us are talking about is the lack of casual contemporary clothes. Tops are extra hard.

I'd encourage people to look into face shapes and neck length before wearing a choker. They are no nos for anyone who needs to lengthen their face / top half.

Skittles I’ve just looked at what Lindybop considers to be their workwear range and it’s just way too girlish and twee. I just want to wear simple classic grown up clothes for work and play.
