Anyone out there want to share good fashion finds? The whole boxy /v straight Cos look couldn't be further from my style.

The cheating way is basically to put the garment on inside out, pinch and then pin the spare fabric to fit at the narrowest point. I find four darts is about right - fewer tends to be too extreme a shape change, more makes it hard to get them even. Once you're happy that it's even work up and down, pinning around your shape as symmetrically as you can. Take it off carefully, adjust for evenness and make sure that the darts taper smoothly at either end before tacking the seams. Turn the right way out and try on, adjust until you're happy before sewing proper seams. Depending on how much fabric you have to spare (and how lazy you're feeling) you can leave it loose or trim and re-hem. Hope that helps - its easier to describe than do!

I’ve found my people! I’m a tall hourglass (39,29,39). I have slim legs so casual tends to be leggings/skinny jeans with a fitted, skimming longer top.

I wear a lot of Warehouse - they have an 11 inch gap in the trousers, and find high waisted with fitted tops tucked in works well for work. Similar to PP, I mainly then wear pencil skirts and A line skirts with plain tshirts and crew or v neck jumpers.

I do battle between feeling too frumpy or too sexy. Warehouse and Phase Eight are my work life savers. ASOS have some brilliant tailored blazers at the moment.

That's really helpful. Thanks Una

32F with bigger hips but square shoulders which make me look more hourglass than pear. The problem is I bloody love Cos and Toast but can't wear most of it. I suit fitted top, flared skirt dresses but I hate the floral patterned 50s look so I go for plain architectural dresses and skirts and wide culottes instead.
I did buy that dress from Toast that had a really long thread on here a few weeks ago and against all odds it's brilliant!

Mrsramsayscat · 06/09/2018 10:19

Movingonup, I tend to wear fitted tops with stretch and good quality scoop neck t shirts with a tiny bit of Lycra in the cotton. M and S limited range are ok for these, plus Hobbs. If cold I add a slightly short cardigan. Or I may wear a jumper, although not a baggy or boyfriend type one.
I don't wear jumpers with leggings as I'm not young enough, I don't think. Although I do wear them with much longer tops or jumper dresses on occasion.
I don't think A line skirts work with loose tops on hour glass women unless they're very tall.

Love that Hobbs dress. The Hobbs Aimee tops are really flattering on an hourglass shape.

fleuriepeninsula · 06/09/2018 13:11

PutANiceFloorIn check out Arket. We are similar shaped (I’m a pear with broad shoulders & small waist) and Arket is everything that Cos can’t do for me.

namechangedbutneedadvice · 06/09/2018 13:16

Happy to know I'm not alone in struggling to do casual well. I have some high waisted jeans from Collectif which I love but I've got a bit of a tummy and IBS to boot which when this flares up makes me look genuinely pregnant. So they're not great for that.

I want to find some jeans and a loose top that I feel confident and comfortable in... 3/4 or long sleeves too as my arms are not my best feature. Would love to hear what other casual combos along these lines that people have found please... especially with autumn coming up Grin

LarryFreakinStylinson · 06/09/2018 13:30

I’m a short fat hourglass. I’m resigned to the fact that I look like a weeble in most clothes.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 06/09/2018 13:30

Hey guys, nice to know i'm not alone. I'm a short hour glass and very heavy on top and am really struggling in general with clothes. As others have said, it's the balance of dressing in a flattering manner versus not looking a bit cheap and hookerish.

I've already posted elsewhere about my current problem which is trying to find a wedding dress which isn't a traditional white dress but I look fabulous in ;)

I shall be watching this thread carefully ;) For work clothes, Bravissimo is my life saver.

hendricksy · 06/09/2018 13:34

Ive just bought this and it's very flattering on the waist.

Me too! I'm a short, fat hourglass and either look shapeless or like I'm trying to be sexy (I'm really not sexy!). Trying to find a happy medium - I do better in autumn and winter as I can wear wrap cardigans. Summer wasn't good, most of the tops I found were either too baggy and made me look boxy, or too fitted and showed off my belly along with my waist. Following these suggestions with interest!

So many brands think we want to cover everything up too. Anything that hits on my bum will make me look even bigger. And some patterns are terrible. Grrr

I tend to avoid any brands designed for curves because they don't seem to actually design for hourglass shapes.

I have some cigarette trousers and am struggling to find a top to go. I have a few sweaters that go fine but need something for when it's too warm for sweaters

user1489589714 · 06/09/2018 16:25

5"1 hourglass DD figure here too. I do like Bravissimo for dresses & tops. I don't really do jeans and tend to wear a lot of jeggings (M&S) /leggings with tunics that pull in at the waist. Mantaray and Maine tunics are often good and I sometimes wear the longer ones as dresses :-) Also Yumi dresses and pencil skirts. Would love to be able to wear shirts, but they seldom work for me. I agree that curvy designed clothes are often like tents.

Hendricksy that Oasis top is lovely.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 06/09/2018 16:32

Where are you all finding wrap cardigans? I never seem to see them!

321cheese · 06/09/2018 16:48

I bought this top online today. I'm not a big fan of Damsel in a Dress as the quality is not the best. This shall be my last attempt with them. www.johnlewis.com/damsel-in-a-dress-carmella-peplum-jersey-top/black

Name change, at the moment I'm wearing some slightly boyfriend jeans from 2008 which I just found in my cupboard. They work. I've heard straight, boyfriend and bootcut work best on curves.

RainbowBriteRules · 06/09/2018 18:52

This is a bit cheeky but can I ask how you all get an hourglass figure? Is it your natural shape or have you achieved it somehow with exercise. I would love to be an hourglass but any weight goes on my tummy.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/09/2018 19:04

For most of us it's our natural shape, @RainbowBriteRules. Generally when we put on weight it is evenly distributed between our top half and bottom, and our middles will remain comparatively small.

I have been thin and I've been fat, but I've always retained that hourglass shape. Ironically, I'd love to be androgynous - think 1980s Annie Lennox. It ain't gonna happen!

RainbowBriteRules · 06/09/2018 19:06

Thanks Greebols, ha, I am similar to that shape naturally. We always want what we don’t have Grin.
