Rainbow I’m just an hourglass, if I put on weight I’m a bigger hour glass.

I love lk bennett & Dunnes Stores, Paul Costello & Lennon & Courtney

For tops I have to tuck or I look like a sack

FlosCampi · 06/09/2018 19:23

Can I join in? I'm a 14-16 hourglass and just a bit fed up with 50s teadresses- I think now I'm in my 40s I might just look frumpy rather than cute and quirky. I get called "glamorous" at work as I wear heels and high waisted pencil skirts and cropped cardigans, but i would much rather be called cool and edgey! If there was a way to wear trousers and flats and a slouchy top that didn't make me look like a cello in a poncho. After too many hours on Pinterest I've just bought some super high waist skinny jeans to wear with a body or wrap top and biker/ suede cropped jacket - I'll be fine if I don't eat anything and keep a flat tummy! But I would like to look careless and edgey.

Hello gang! 5'3", 12-14 with 34G norks and all the same hassles. My life got much easier when I discovered Robell trousers. They look like tailored cigarette pants or crops but are pull-on with fake flies and somehow manage to fit perfectly with no sagging, bagging or digging in. I now have 8 pairs Grin. Rose 07 for below the knee pedal pushers, Rose 09 for normal slim trousers (they're actually 7/8 but work full length for me) , Bella 09 for lovely light seersucker-like non-frumpy summer trousers, and also jeans. Need to go down a size as they come up big.

I know what you mean about wanting to look edgy @FlosCampi. Not sure if you have heard of fashion personalities but I am a Romantic Classic. Me and edgy are just not meant to be. I have compromised with a few modern accessories but edgy I am not.

Ps. Keep the brand recommendations coming ladies!

I hear you, cheese I'm a dramatic classic, which makes casual dressing even harder!

321cheese · 06/09/2018 19:49

Sympathies @vitaminC though I am a bit envious of your dramatic! That must be pretty unusual for an hourglass shape?

OP posts:
vitaminC · 06/09/2018 19:51

I think it's a pretty common combination, actually.
I started a dramatic classic thread on here a couple of years ago and quite a few hour glasses posted on it.

321cheese · 06/09/2018 19:53

What are fashion personalities?

Another hourglass here, reading your recommendations. I’ve started exercising (weights) to tone up my body in an attempt to head away from frumpy hourglass.

neffall · 06/09/2018 20:05

I too am an egg on legs. Phase Eight is my go-to brand. I look like a sack of shit in Toast.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 06/09/2018 20:26

I’m a titchy short hourglass, and really only suit very classic clothing. Casual clothes make me look like a sack of tatties and if I wear anything too short or low cut I resemble the whore of Babylon. Workwear is easy but at home it’s really hard unless I want to skip around in tea dresses.

FlosCampi · 06/09/2018 20:50

@smellyrose have a look at Aly Art on YouTube for those personalities- it totally nails what I (a theatrical romantic) loom best in, and it's perfect for, say, an art gallery opening- less so for a Cornish holiday. In fact, has anyone found a breton top and shorts combo that suit our shape? What is the secret of casual clothing, is it keep emphasising the waist? long jumper and jeggings look ok if they follow my waist in and out. Are there tailored Bretons and thigh following shorts? In a sundress I'm a Salma Hayek, in trousers and a t shirt an oxo cube!

vitaminC · 06/09/2018 21:07

I have this top in several colours. It fits and looks great! I have a long body and short legs and find it hard to find flattering tops that are long enough, and these are perfect: www.zalando.fr/anna-field-t-shirt-a-manches-longues-goblinblue-an621d07g-p12.html

I actually have a few items from that brand. They are reasonably priced and decent quality, and most of all, they sell clothes that flatter my shape Smile

MrsBartlettforthewin · 06/09/2018 21:11

Me! Oasis has been great. I'm a short arse and their clothes seem to work for my shape and height.

vitaminC · 06/09/2018 21:12

Flos I think the secret is that it needs to be structured, to avoid looking like a sack of spuds!

So fitted waist, yes, but also well-cut shoulders and neckline, and a thickish material that hangs well.

I find clothes with stretch (elastane) five a more flattering fit, as they don't just hang there, but the fabric needs to be heavy enough.

I bought a few clothes on a recent trip to the USA and was amazed that absolutely evrything they sell is stretchy and so much more flattering than European brands! Unfortunately, you have to be careful about the fabrics, but I found a couple of really good quality brands and I'm really pleased with my purchases.

Paranormalbouquet · 06/09/2018 21:17

I’m somewhere between an hourglass and a pear- busty, small waist and enormous backside and thighs (more bottom heavy than top but not a true pear). Normally size 12-14.

Currently pregnant (so look like a large blob) but keeping an eye out for clothes for afterwards. Only suit classic clothes too, look awful in leggings/skinnies and loose top- and it’s all that’s ever in the shops!

Never heard about fashion personalities, shall take a look now!

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 07/09/2018 16:08

I think I'm a soft natural according to Kibbe body types/fashion personalities. Now looking at what that means clothes-wise!

KatharinaRosalie · 07/09/2018 18:36

Have you heard of www.eshakti.com ?They custom make clothes according to your measurements, so no more gaping waists of pulling buttons. Just got 2 dresses, one was disapointing and went back for full refund, but the other fits like a glove.

321cheese · 08/09/2018 18:43

The Damsel in Dress top I mentioned looks horrid. That's one brand that doesn't design for women with curves.

Another dramatic classic here. Just under 5’7” and 38-28-38. Its true that casual is the killer.

What i do is go for pointy flats, skinny jeans, a top of some kind thats loose but i belt it then pull some out so you can just see the front of my belt then i sling a fitted blazer over it (or gillet). Those with lycra are best to avoid boob strain. I roll the sleeves up on the blaze so it doesnt look like work wear & I wear bangles/big watch combo & a pendant. So it looks smartish but casual.

Gah81 · 08/09/2018 22:44

5ft7 and 35-24-37 but with shoulders which balance out the hips. I tend to wear true vintage from the 40s and 50s - they cut for women my size and shape and it is so wonderful not to have everything altered by my seamstress.

For contemporary brands I like:

Vivien of Holloway pencil skirts
Baukjen jersey dresses
Mango trousers

Like others, I find casual a bit more difficult but it's usually just what I wear for work in difference fabrics: so a denim pencil skirt with a casual shirt tucked in. I also wear midi skirts with ankle boots or knee high boots. Or a short jumper dress with OTK flat boots.

I also wear 40s high-waisted jeans with shirts knotted at the waist.

Whisky2014 · 08/09/2018 22:46

Me! I like oasis and Joseph ribkoff

Ollivander84 · 08/09/2018 23:45

I'm tall but have a flat bum and very busty Confused and have a bit of a tummy. From the front i am hourglass. Making myself sound attractive here Grin this is most recent pic, I love these Collectif dresses

Any other hourglass shapes out there? All curves welcome
mzterry · 09/09/2018 04:46

am also an hourglass: 37-27-37, and am 5 7 tall. I like bodycon: it works, for me! Pencil skirts, ace! But you can't always wear 'sexy' frocks, can you? bah...

jeans can be a nightmare until I discovered high waisted jeans! I will never ever buy a pair of 'normal' jeans again! I hated jeans: always too low cut, made me look fat, overspill, all that (and I'm hardly fat, am I?), but then, high waisted jeans came into my life... thank you, fashion gods!

I buy mine from 'Very', own brand, usually around £30 a pair. They do flared/bootcut (which I never buy) skinny, (which I live in) and a straight leg (which is nice with trainers).

with regards to trousers: mega issues there, too. my legs are 31, conventional pants are too short at 29-30 ins, and the waist? ew, no. gaping, too low, hip/waist ratio all wrong on my body

until I discovered... tall trousers! seriously girls, try it! I'm only five seven, so I'm not tall, but, that tall proportion, works better with an hourglass body, and I no longer have to always wear ankle boots because my trousers are too short, and I no longer have to worry about getting tops in just that right length: I just chuck on a crew neck t shirt and bingo, am dressed, and I look pulled together!

same with shorts. love shorts, have good legs too, and I see them on other people and think they look great, but I put them on, and I look like a fat, oddly proportioned child until I discovered, tall shorts. haha. that extra few inches makes a massive difference.

seriously, try the tall pants and the high waisted jeans thing: see if it works for you: if it does: report back!!
