What the hell is going on at Mint Velvet?

I'm not a huge fan of their clothes, but I do like their shoes and accessories. However I was browsing their website and they seem to have some truly awful tops.

My friend has an almost identical top to this one from Matalan for about £12.

£40 for this? Really? What are they up to?

I know it's juts gone a bit wrong.

I went in a few months back and left empty handed something about it is saying Per Una to me.

GrimDamnFanjo · 02/09/2018 00:50

That top is nearly Hush prices!

ItsalmostSummer · 02/09/2018 01:00

Funny! Maybe it’s meant to bean 80s flashback? Grin

lexer · 02/09/2018 01:02

Looks like a £5 primark jobbie to me.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/09/2018 04:18

So many very cheap looking tops at not very cheap prices. Though some are certainly more affordable than their normal stuff, most of it is absolutely awful.

And £149 for a 100% polyester dress? WTF?

speakfriendandenter · 02/09/2018 05:22

I'm a bit concerned about the model's arm. That angle looks so strange.
I agree about the pricing though. It's ridiculous that some people will pay that. It's not as if it's actually 'nicer' or better quality either.

CountFosco · 02/09/2018 05:41

That top is nearly Hush prices!

And Hush seem to be doing well. Mint Velvet are going for the same market. Boden is only slightly cheaper for a plain t-shirt. I don't think it's that surprising that these things sell, Hush is all light and mirrors after all, the clothes regularly get a pasting on here for being low quality but everyone is seduced by the nice styling.

actualpuffins · 02/09/2018 05:43

I have had the odd nice thing from there, but I find them same and expensive. Lately I've found their stuff just really boring.

herecomesthsun · 02/09/2018 06:40

Do these guys do big discounts? It helps them to start with a big mark up, if so.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 02/09/2018 06:47

That t shirt is horrible. I've never shopped at Mint Velvet though.

Why does everyone compare things to Hush like it's some holy grail?

bebesequin · 02/09/2018 08:29

Hush is shite.

I have some of their t shirts I have to wear a vest under them as so see through.

The star jumpers - absolute rubbish - had nicer cashmere jumpers from Tesco for £35,

Agree Mint Velvet very over priced too.

But not the only ones Whistles and Jigsaw also charging over £100 for vicose tops.

I generally find Boden quality better but they too are overpricing basics like T shirts.

Clothing quality is rubbish these days. I have garments in my wardrobe from 5-10 years ago which are really well made.

lexer · 02/09/2018 08:49

@sleepinginyourflowerbed...I agree. I keep seeing Hush threads and expecting something wonderful. All run of the mill IMO.

superfly2018 · 02/09/2018 09:00

I keep going in there happy to pay the extortionate prices in theory but it's all so damn flimsy and cheap looking I never like anything. There are getting to be fewer and fewer shops I can shop in and that's even being prepared to pay £££'a

superfly2018 · 02/09/2018 09:01

I buy from hush but really must stop, it's shocking quality and the prices aren't justified at all

HRTpatch · 02/09/2018 09:01

The knitwear is particularly poor quality.

Greenteandchives · 02/09/2018 09:03

I am so disappointed in recent Mint Velvet offerings. Some of my favourite tops and dresses came from there a few years ago, but I haven’t bought anything for a couple of years now, except a t shirt in the sales. I still trawl the rails regularly in hope.....

hendricksy · 02/09/2018 09:18

Hush have excellent marketing and have convinced a nation of their amazing products . In reality it's flimsy tat ..

ForeverJung · 02/09/2018 10:04

I think both Hush and Mint Velvet have similar styles of clothes and without being aware of their own marketing, I see them as very similar.

I would buy the odd thing from Mint Velvet because their shoes are lovely and their jeans fit me well. Their tops are where they fall down IMO

I have no Mint Velvet tops despite shopping there fairly regularly.

Sarcelle · 02/09/2018 10:12

Glad it is not just me about Hush. I regularly look at their stuff when I visit a big branch of John Lewis. It all looks like normal garb, no head turners so not sure why the awe about it. I think some brands get latched onto for a while, and then opinion moves on.

Fabellini · 02/09/2018 11:14

I like Hush and have a lot of stuff from them - their (extremely) similar tshirts sell for £35, but you’re a fool if you pay that....they have almost always got a discount code of some kind on the go.

EdinaMonsoon · 02/09/2018 11:40

Both brands have the occasional good piece. MV black jeans seem to be a good fit (only tried on - no idea how they wear long term). As for most of the tops & knitwear, I find astonishing that people would pay those prices for poor quality. There's a lot of manmade fibre and often quite flimsy.

Hush also has it's moments. The boyfriend fit jeans are perfect - beautifully soft & worn-in denim, as was this summer's white boyfriend shorts. Their knitwear used to be really good. I have merino & cashmere knits from 10 years ago which are still looking good & last year's navy "Love" jumper was a keeper. But in recent years I have definitely returned more items than I have kept.

TSSDNCOP · 02/09/2018 12:24

I put MV in the Phase 8 bucket as it seems to have instant aging properties.

Totally agree with the PP that I need to step away from Hush as I'm also seduced by the marketing and am always, always cross after 2 washes.

I love Whistles, but their prices are making me do a sharp intake of breath at the moment.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/09/2018 12:48

The knitwear is particularly poor quality.

If you mean MV I completely agree. I bought a jumper which looked like a rag after a couple of washes. Ended up in the recycling. Awful quality.

They are trading on their names. Not impressed by Jigsaw either and Hobbs is so...well...Hobbs.
Cos is great, though.
