What the hell is going on at Mint Velvet?

I'm not a huge fan of their clothes, but I do like their shoes and accessories. However I was browsing their website and they seem to have some truly awful tops.

My friend has an almost identical top to this one from Matalan for about £12.

£40 for this? Really? What are they up to?

Try Oliver Bonas.

AJPTaylor · 03/09/2018 08:39

Anyone seen decent quality petite length work trousers and v necked t shirts that are actually of a decent thickness? Returning to work next week and i am slightly despairing!

Fightthebear · 03/09/2018 09:56

Whistles’ quality has really gone downhill.

Blankscreen · 03/09/2018 10:05

Yes I agree about whistles. I got some vouchers for my birthday and I got a nice skirt and top but it is soooo expensive. A few days later I got a similar skirt in Primark for £10. The Primark one only has an elasticated waist where as the whistles one has a zip and a fastener but I really can't see what justifies the £120 difference. Both are polyester.

I think that is why Primark is going from strength to strength, they use cheap material but then you pay cheap prices. The other places are now using cheap material but keeping their premium price tag.

Aspenfrost · 03/09/2018 13:20

Mint Velvet has definitely morphed into Hush. Probably not a good plan. I saw a star on one of their jumpers recently which says it all.

user1457017537 · 03/09/2018 13:25

I have given up on MV and will not be buying from them again. I’m not a fan of their monochrome look and now they have introduced colour it is a bit bright! However the real problem I find is the fit, and the seams seem a bit twisted on the dresses.

Fresta · 03/09/2018 13:27

I agree Whistles prices seem extortionate! However, everything I have bought there is beautifully cut and finished and made from quality fabric. A dress I bought recently might be polyester but if it was actually silk it wouldn't be as durable or machine washable so I don't mind good quality man-made fabrics. Natural fabrics don't always=quality. If you can buy in the sale then the value is better, obviously.

For the best quality I like LK bennett whose prices are also sky high and their styles can be somewhat frumpy if you don't choose carefully.

OliveBranchManager · 03/09/2018 14:05

Whistles have been around for years and they seem to survive despite selling what looks to me like fairly ordinary clothes at a bafflingly high prices for what they are.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/09/2018 17:41

Whistles used to be great for t-shirts, but their prices now are eye-watering. You can get the occasional brilliant dress in the sale, but there's no way I'd pay full price.

Jigsaw used to have some really exciting stuff, but now most of it looks dull and droopy and pricing is extortionate even when reduced.

I think quality and sizing is getting worse everywhere thb.

Bluelady · 03/09/2018 18:00

Quality is awful everywhere. Hush are doing a red jumper with a leopard print star this year, looks amazing on their website, it looks like Primark in reality. I was also looking at Modern Rarity the same day - who pays £100 for an acrylic sweater?

Ifonlyiweretaller · 03/09/2018 18:25

...typically late to the party here Grin I bought some tops in both Whistles and Mint Velvet recently....I thought I was finally getting a bit more 'on trend' only to read this post and discover most people don't rate them any more!

Bluelady · 03/09/2018 18:32

If you like them that's what matters.

bebesequin · 03/09/2018 19:41

I have just ordered from...….Marks & Spencer.

2 pairs of ankle grazer trousers for work- very similar in quality to my Boden ones which IIRC £75 a pair - M&S ones £29

A casual wafty 'jeans' at the weekend top £22 - very similar to mint velvet/Boden ones I already have but half the price.

A short trench coat £45 and finally for fun a pair of loafers.

All very nice quality and good value.

Not some where I shop often - apart from tights and undies and food but have started to look a bit closer at their clothing,

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/09/2018 19:45

I've had a fair few things from M&S shrink in the past year - cashmere, a silk top and some cotton trousers. We wash in a very cool wash, so it's definitely not to do with how they're being washed. So annoying.

BubblesBuddy · 03/09/2018 19:58

I bought an excellent T shirt from M&S this summer with a cotton trim on the bottom. Really good fabric. Other T shirts worth buying are from Cos. I would also consider Arket. They use decent quality fabrics.

If you want high quality fabrics that will last, you have to pay! Whistles has always been expensive for the High St along with Karen Millen, Jigsaw and LK Bennett. MV, Hush and a few others sit under this pricing point. Toast and Brora are top end but deliver on quality. My T shirt requirements are not see through and that they don’t pull out of shape when washed. You would think that was easy to find, but it’s not! Go Scandi in my view!

DavetheCat2001 · 03/09/2018 20:09

I have to say I do love a MV boot!

I have a couple of pairs and they are gorgeous and well made.

MadMaryBoddington · 03/09/2018 20:20

Mint Velvet has definitely morphed into Hush

I think Mint Velvet was doing this ‘look’ first. I’ve been buying from them for years and I don’t think the style has changed much. Certainly they were doing jumpers with stars on them a couple of seasons ago.

I like their stuff and have been perfectly happy with recent purchases.

MissClareRemembers · 03/09/2018 22:04

I love a star jumper, me.

WipsGlitter · 04/09/2018 08:39

Mint velvet quality is shite. Mind you so is hush!!

I got a dress from hush and it was so crumpled when it arrived it was shocking. It also had a rip in the pocket and a rip behind the collar so I sent it back!

Elledorado · 04/09/2018 10:45

I still like jigsaw too but you have to dodge the frump.

QueenoftheNights · 04/09/2018 12:31

I don't know why Mint Velvet and Hush are obsessed with stars. We aren't bloody 5 year olds who want stuff like this on out tops.
WTF is wrong with them?

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 04/09/2018 12:35

That pink top looks like something Atomic Kitten would wear on SMTV circa 2000/01.

brassbrass · 04/09/2018 14:54

Not only this but you recognise it a mile off, bit like the Boden stuff. In real life on an ordinary woman it screams BODEN! or HUSH! Gone down the route of mumsy uniform. Orla Keily bags did the same. All the playground sheep cliques had one put me right off them and I thought they were great when they came out.

Oh god lol 😂

Irish3008 · 04/09/2018 15:57

I know LK Bennett isn't popular on here but I was still a fan. This season they have upped their prices too. Gutted. Their quality has also dropped.

Thinking I should dust off my sewing machine!
