I agree ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual.

They are different people. I do hope that they are not played against each other - hopefully they're older and wiser than Diana and Fergie were when the Press did it to them, and will handle it better.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/09/2018 08:59

It was the last of his names @missclimpson but it was the name he was always called by family and close friends! But you're right, I forgot that Lord Snowden's name is also David.

There's a picture of the bride's dress, she looks beautiful.
Strange headpiece but it looks really classic

I know I'm behind on this thread, but I just looked through all of the pictures of Diana in that link (waaaay back up now) and I'm really surprised at how often she was bare-shouldered!

Lots of strappy dresses, or strapless dresses, hints of cleavage, etc.

I wonder what's changed? We would all keel over in shock if any Royal was seen like that now. They've all become very staid and safe.

RainbowsArePretty · 24/09/2018 09:43

George is so cute in these pictures! He looks like he's having a great time.

The bride looks beautiful

Quantumblue · 24/09/2018 09:43

I think Kate paces herself for the long haul. No drama, no opinions and a clear distinction between her public and private selves.

GrumbleBumble · 24/09/2018 09:54

The wedding pictures will be a bit of a shock to those posters who have decide that George is an introvert facing a life time of misery at being forced to interact with people while Charlotte is born to lap up the lime light!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 24/09/2018 11:06

I couldn't see the photos very well on my PC but George appears to be dressed as a small chef?

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/09/2018 11:26

Yes, clearly a case of child labour as George and the other pageboys had to cook the wedding breakfast after the ceremony!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 24/09/2018 11:37

I can see why Kate picked outfit based on the colour scheme of the wedding party.
The bride looks really pretty. Her dress looks like a lace version of Diana's Elvis dress. Shame no one could lend her tiara. I didn't like that headband.

Clionba · 24/09/2018 12:21

Kate often wears that shade of blue. Think of her engagement dress. It's also a reference to her sapphire engagement ring.
I wonder how many times George and Charlotte (and later Louis) will be page boys/bridesmaid? Charlotte will be the most sought after bridesmaid for some years.

SenecaFalls · 24/09/2018 12:39

Also Sir David Bowes-Lyon was one of Charles's godparents.

Not sure if there have been any royal James’s since James II?

Edward and Sophie's son is James. He is technically a prince, although called Viscount Severn.

As for Michael, I agree it's a good name, but maybe they didn't want another Prince Michael in the family.

BigGlasses · 24/09/2018 13:11

I heard they didn't use James as there is ambiguity in whther he would be James III or James VIII in Scotland if he ever reached the throne. There was a similar problem when the Queen was corronated in 1952, In England she is Queen Elizabeth II but Scotland has never had a 1st Queen Elizabeth so there was a bit of a problem on what to call her. They have kind of just brushed it under the carpet but it was a big story at the time. Post boxes inScotland have the Scottish crown and ER on them compared to ones in England which have the normal crown and E II R on them.

SenecaFalls · 24/09/2018 13:49

There is that same issue with the name William. The first two Williams were kings of England, but not Scotland.

OlennasWimple · 24/09/2018 14:09

Perhaps the naming means that Kate is not, as is often speculated, a MNer?

Can you imagine the thread: "I'm about to have DC3, another son. I want to use Louis as his first name, but we already used it for one of DS1's middle names. Is that OK"

MN: "Nooo! Give him his own name! He'll already be in the shadow of his elder brother, he deserves his own name and identity. There are plenty of lovely names out there to chose from"

Grin
OlennasWimple · 24/09/2018 14:13

Mind you, I just looked up a list of British princes and found this Wiki page

There is a remarkably small pool of names...

George, Albert, Frederick, Louis, Henry, Victor, Augustus, William, Edward, Alfred, Christian, Patrick, Michael, Leopold, Adolphus, Andrew, David and that's about it.

In fact, Charles rather comes out of left field in 1948!

SenecaFalls · 24/09/2018 14:28

There have been a few Richards.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/09/2018 14:59

Richard is one of Prince Edward's names. James Severn also has Theo as a middle name and I don't think there have been any Theos in the family. Maybe it's from Sophie's side.

Not only did Charles come out of left field but I don't think there'd been a Princess Elizabeth for years either. Though she was obviously named for her mother. Had there been a Margaret?

OP posts:
SenecaFalls · 24/09/2018 15:31

I have read that they chose Margaret because she was born in Scotland, a reference to Queen Margaret aka Saint Margaret. Everyone was hoping for a boy and supposedly they hadn't really thought about girls' names.

evilharpy · 24/09/2018 15:52

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/amp23395755/meghan-markle-oscar-de-la-renta-coach-core-awards/ Meghan’s at Loughborough today. I can’t quite get my head around black and navy! Love her blouse though - it’s Oscar de la Renta. Sorry for the formatting, my phone hates me.

Clionba · 24/09/2018 15:54

The regnal numbers were agreed BigGlasses at the Act of Union. The principal is that the later number applies. The names thing is fascinating. All of these are Hanoverian - I'd like a return to Eleanor, Matilda, Edmund etc!!

SenecaFalls · 24/09/2018 16:15

Had there been a Margaret? There was Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII.

missclimpson · 24/09/2018 16:23

It isn't that narrow a range though is it, from Queen Victoria onwards? Royal children's names included Victoria, Albert Edward, Alice, Arthur, Alfred, Leopold, Helena, Louise, Beatrice, Albert Victor, Maud, Alexander, Mary, as well as the usual suspects.

Paradyning · 24/09/2018 16:24

evilharpy just saw those pic of MM from today and was going to say about the navy and black. I've always had that mantra in my head that you shouldn't mix the two.
She's wearing bootcuts again too

Clionba · 24/09/2018 16:34

I really like the name Helena. I heard the rumours that Kate wanted George to be called Alexander (interesting) and of course the preference of Albert for Louis.
