Jeans to stay skinny or move on?

Shenanagins · 20/08/2018 22:24

I am needing new jeans and like most people have lived in skinny jeans for years.
What I love about them is that I can dress them up with a heel, wear with flats, tuck into wellies and they still look ok.
However, things are changing and I’m not sure whether to move on and if so what to especially as I need jeans to be so versatile.
The other thing is that I have short legs so skinnies were great as I could always roll them up.
Does anyone have any suggestions!

Shortarse here. I love skinnies. Boots. Heels.loafers. scrappy sandals all work and I don't have to spend megabucks getting them shortened etc. Just get a size bigger and wear with a belt off you want looser ones.

Bootcut jeans....

I was looking through some old photos of the late 90's early 2000's and there we all are are sporting these hideous specimens! Acres of material flapping round your foot. Nightmare to tuck into boots (yes I realise that's the not the point of a bootcut!) and truely dreadful in the rain.
I'm thick of calf and my bootcut Levi's frankly looked like bell bottoms! Hideous and hugely unflattering!
I remember the skinny jean back then would have been scoffed at as the kind of thing a contestant on Bullseye would have worn.

In a few years we'll be looking back and scoffing again at skinnies- change in fashion is gradual- you won't even notice it until you look back. I don't know what jeans are coming next but already the hipsters of a few years ago are scoffed at by my dd who won't entertain anything but high-waist jeans. It seems only yesterday we were all going round with our g-strings showing and our love handles hanging over the sides.

I can only guess the posters who can’t imagne how to wear boot shoes in winter without skinnies and who’s think they’re a classic, are quite young. (Compared to me at least). I can remember when skinnies first graced our shops and thought, how on earth are we meant to wear these with boots? Of course then, trousers were meant to fall over your boots so that only the tips of your shoes showed.

I laughed when a poster wrote skinnies will never go out of fashion and they’ll buy loads and stick to them so that theyre always looking fabulous (not quite their words but amounts to to the same). I bet every single Mumsy looking woman said that once upon a time Grin

Believe me skinnies will go out of fashion! Just like baggy trousers did for some of us. Drainpipes went out of fashion for our parents(I remeber looking at photos thinking,’how on earth did they get their legs through those? How stupid of them not to realise that they’re supposed to be made baggy? I thought baggies were a staple and it took my generation to figure it out. Little did we know then that our dc Williams be wearing skinnies again Shock. Honestly you will look back at your photos in your cool skinny jeans in 20yrs times and think OMG! They are hideous! How did we not see it then?
Grin.

Am I really the only one who hates skinnies and can't wait for them to piss off out of the shops?? I am short and fat and they make my thick-thighed legs look like a pair of carrots. I've always looked way better in flared styles and I don't care if they're frumpy or mumsy or whatever the hell else people say. Honestly, if you don't have long, slender legs jeans are a nightmare to buy at the moment.

Nevermindhey · 24/08/2018 09:50

I had an email from new look the other day with all the different jeans styles - skinny, cropped, flared, bootcut, mom jeans, boyfriend jeans. Take your pick! Still skinny for me.

VanGoghsDog · 24/08/2018 11:05

@GraceMarks

I've never owned a pair of skinny jeans, nor a pair of leggings or jeggings. I can barely even say jeggings!

My legs are fine, used to be my second best feature, though as I am 50 they have got a bit more chunky (though my first best feature has actually benefited a bit from weight gain).

I've never known what jeans to wear and I loathe the names -'mom jean', wtf? I'm not a mom, or even a mum. 'Boyfriend jeans'? Seriously?

Anyway, I just try to wear straight leg jeans that are not too flappy nor too tight, a semi bootcut is OK, skightly tapered is OK. Droopy crotches are the biggest annoyance. I prefer a dark denim, even ink, but no light or stonewash (shudder). I'm OK with black, but no other colours.

MenaMecca · 24/08/2018 11:14

@GraceMarks - you’re not alone. I hate skinnies too. And I’m tall with long lean legs. I also have a bigger upper body, which doesn’t look good in long tops, which skinnies go well with.

I love boyfriend jeans. I’m trying to like mom jeans (Levis 501) but they don’t suit me too.

Delatron · 24/08/2018 13:13

I do remember that jeans used to hang over the boot so you could barely see the boot. I have nice boots! I don’t want to just see the toe part. Also remember the hem getting trashed and wet.

I think for years we have heard that skinnies are going out. They are still around. Agree high waisted jeans are in. Maybe I can work a straight leg that sits just above the boot....

The post above about silhouettes is really interesting. Looking back at my university pictures I was in flared jeans with tight strapless tops. More recent pictures are of me in skinny jeans and longer line tops and knew high boots. Totally different shape between the top and bottom. I hope skinnies stay as I like wearing them with boots. I also looked a lot fatter in flared cut jeans despite the fact I was thinner.

Delatron · 24/08/2018 15:15

Yes user I think a flare requires a tight top. Skinny a looser top. I like a baggy, longer jumper with skinny jeans and boots.

In summer I wear more varieties so have some looser jeans that I wear with sandals and vests. They just don’t work with footwear in the winter.

BadderWolf · 24/08/2018 18:26

Skinnies and their variants (semi/straight skinny etc) definitely not over. I hope Grin

I happily purchased 2 new pairs yesterday from Mavi (Tess and Adriana) who imho make some of the most flattering jeans around and over 75% of their currents styles are still slim/skinny.

Ellapaella · 24/08/2018 18:32

The shops are full to bursting with skinnies for the new season. Definitely not a dying breed. I love cropped jeans (the wide leg ones) but the reality is they look lovely on people with lovely slim waists who can wear them with a tight fitting top but sadly not on me.
Love boyfriend jeans, agree they can be worn with trainers right the way through colder months.

Floisme · 24/08/2018 18:39

It took several years for skinnies to take hold and it'll take just as long for them to release the grip. It's not like buying a cold shoulder top to wear with things you've already got. When we get a change of jeans shape, tops and shoes all change too. Of course it takes time but it doesn't mean it won't happen. If nothing ever went out of fashion we'd still be in crinolines.

Bluewidow · 24/08/2018 18:43

High waisted flared jeans I have just ordered . I don't like skin he's make my legs look like marshmallows. However will still wear when I need to be in a filed with my joules parka coat and boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2018 18:47

Skinnies will definitely still be around, but personally I'm getting a bit sick of black skinnies, having lived in them for years.

I've bought:
Grey and mid-blue straight leg Levis, which I've been wearing rolled up with trainers and am also hoping will work full length with ankle boots

And earlier in the year I bought a loose-ish distressed dark blue 7 For All Mankind pair, that have a raw-edge turn up and work with ankle boots or wedges, as well as trainers.

sepiatonedlover · 30/08/2018 12:16

Just received my uniqlo cigarette jeans - absolutely love them, really comfy and look great. They're quite short though, are they meant to be cropped? Fine for this weather just thinking ahead to the winter!

Roominmyhouse · 30/08/2018 17:28

@hammeringinmyhead topshop mooch jeans were the best! I still have a denim skirt I made from my last pair. I’d love them too bring those back.

XingMing · 30/08/2018 21:02

My fashion retailing friends think it will be a slow change to a new silhouette as most people have decided that skinny is flattering if well chosen. I've gone back to 501s and similarly wide slouchy looks because I'm fickle and want a non-standard look. I shall style jeans a bit wider and maybe shorter to avoid capillary action, but for dress purposes it's going to be floor sweeping, with high heels for going out/dress up. ANd the boots will always go up inside the leg, but daintily! No tucking in.
