Jeans to stay skinny or move on?

Shenanagins · 20/08/2018 22:24

I am needing new jeans and like most people have lived in skinny jeans for years.
What I love about them is that I can dress them up with a heel, wear with flats, tuck into wellies and they still look ok.
However, things are changing and I’m not sure whether to move on and if so what to especially as I need jeans to be so versatile.
The other thing is that I have short legs so skinnies were great as I could always roll them up.
Does anyone have any suggestions!

I need a high waist tho as I’ve a kangaroos pouch following two C Sections; hence the vote for the cigarette jean.

I have big thighs that alternate between fat and muscle but stay big whereas my bum and lower legs are “normal”. This is why I get “thigh choke” with skinnies and it also stretches the material unflatteringly.

Cigarette jeans do give a bit at the waist but I don’t think them frumpy, and they’d tuck into a riding boot nicely.

My impression is that skinnies are here to stay but girlfriend style is the alternative that’s less tight and not into “mom jean” territory”.

Christ, feels like I’m writing a PhD

I personally think skinnies are a staple now, yes they were out of fashion for a long time but times & body shapes have changed so I can’t see them ever going anywhere. The width of offer re shapes has increased but that’s probably aimed at the youth.

JulianOfNorwich · 22/08/2018 10:12

Cropped jeans give everyone cropped legs.

LadyWarleggan · 22/08/2018 10:25

@fresta is spot on about the skinny jeans. Certainly not a classic. Can’t remember seeing a single skinny jean in the 90’s when I was in uni, you’d have been laughed out of town. The baggier the better back then.

I do hope they are on their way out, can’t stand the feel of them wrapped round my legs. They’re one of those ensembles that seem to look so good on other people but just don’t look right when you wear it.

murphys · 22/08/2018 10:26

I have just bought two more pairs of skinnies in different colours, they just fit well and I like them. But i did see a huge range of bootlegs as well, so perhaps they are making a come back.

I should add i do still wear bootlegs, a fairly recent skinnies convert infact. If you are shaped right then bootlegs look classic I think. Not those really wide ones, but the more straight but subtle ones.

I think I might have been wearing my skinnies wrong.... Hmm. I wear them with tightish tops, like today.... vest top and a cardigan which isn't loose by any means. Is this a no no then?? Confused

Elledorado · 22/08/2018 10:53

I think skinny is very very gradually giving way to straight or slim leg jeans, or proper wide leg or flares. Bootleg just still looks dated to me.

Brummiegirl15 · 22/08/2018 13:45

Question is, who does the best skinny jeans???

I like mine very dark blue.

JulianOfNorwich · 22/08/2018 15:40

Brummie I've recently had very dark skinnies from Kin (John Lewis) and Boden. Both quite mumsy brands but their skinnies are great- dark and stretchy

Biologifemini · 22/08/2018 20:13

Skinnies will stay because of the weather. You just cannot wear boot cuts or long wide leg jeans in wet weather. Capillary action will mean damp legs.
I like cropped jeans and looser styles but cannot give up skinnies, they are just too useful.

downinthejunglee · 22/08/2018 20:14

'Mum' jeans are the latest trend according to dd

Tallula386 · 22/08/2018 20:26

Mum jeans.

Or a decent pair of straight leg Levi's!

Tallula386 · 22/08/2018 20:27

Oooh, for those of you who love skinnies- try H&M feathersoft Smile

I think skinny jeans are a staple, but they aren’t the “cool” style they initially were. I wear black skinny jeans for work, or in the snow with boots, but have other styles I prefer to. I am currently favouring the “barrel leg” from Whistles, like a “mom” jean (i think Topshop’s are best) and a cropped, straight leg from All Saints. I do think these are easier in summer with bare ankles, but last year started wearing fishnet or glittery ankle socks in colder weather. (I wear trainer sock things under those, even with boots, because they can be a bit scratchy against the actual foot.) I also rediscovered cords last winter, in a peg-leg shape, which I am looking forward to wearing again soon.

FWIW I’m a lecturer and teach/see lots of young women in their late teens/early 20s every day at work - I’d say 80% of those who wear jeans wear skinny jeans.

MoltonSilver · 22/08/2018 21:47

I think skinny jeans with heels look really dated now.

Polkapjs · 23/08/2018 22:01

I’m just about to ditch 3 pairs of bootcut Levi’s- should I keep them?

MoltonSilver · 23/08/2018 23:52

Yes, keep them.

Fatted · 24/08/2018 00:05

Urgh, just wear what you want! I'm short pear shape and I love my skinnies cos they're so versatile with flat, comfy shoes in the summer or to wear with boots in the winter. I also never gave up on bootcut jeans or boyfriend fit jeans. I like what I like, I know what suits me and all these horrible cropped and tapered leg jeans just look hideous on my shape. I also don't know what anyone is meant to wear with them in winter?!

leccybill · 24/08/2018 00:05

Keep the Levis!

Yes to skinnies and heels looking awful.

Watchingtheworldgoby · 24/08/2018 02:04

I know lots of you will disagree with me but I think skinny jeans and heel look really tartish.

Like someone else said, I found old bootcut jeans and tried them on recently and they were hideous. My sister never stopped wearing bootcuts and she looks older than she is (mid forties).

And nope skinny jeans are not classic :).

MenaMecca · 24/08/2018 02:13

Skinny jeans and heels look good on women with long lean straightish legs.

Watchingtheworldgoby · 24/08/2018 02:16

Mena You are right. If someone has the legs of a giraffe, they can look fab. But very few of us do............

Dustbunny1900 · 24/08/2018 02:58

Okay but unless you’re 17, stylish, and thin with the stomach for little crop tops I don’t see “90s momcore” jeans with shapeless legs and a mile of baggy crotch flattering either.
I’m also thoroughly confused as to what shape is “in”. I’ve only now just gotten used to the look of skinnies..and now they’re gone??
I’ve told myself I need to get it together wardrobe-wise because I’ve been living in leggings and shorts but now the thought of buying jeans my mother wore is cringe-inducing.

Dustbunny1900 · 24/08/2018 03:04

When I google jeans shapes for 2018/2019 it basically looks like something “Urkel” would be proud to sport ..a mile of crotch and pant legs that look like a kid that’s just hit puberty and hasn’t had time to buy ones that are long enough. How the heck is that practical for winter

Delatron · 24/08/2018 03:19

Yes I don’t want loads of bag round my bum and crotch! I’m also quite skinny so boyfriend cut just hang off me. I’m sad skinnies are dated, they were a style that suited me.

Not sure what I would wear on a night out? Straight leg?

Delatron · 24/08/2018 03:20

I also tuck skinnies in to ankle boots in winter. I guess this is dated too but what’s the alternative?
