Jeans to stay skinny or move on?

Shenanagins · 20/08/2018 22:24

I am needing new jeans and like most people have lived in skinny jeans for years.
What I love about them is that I can dress them up with a heel, wear with flats, tuck into wellies and they still look ok.
However, things are changing and I’m not sure whether to move on and if so what to especially as I need jeans to be so versatile.
The other thing is that I have short legs so skinnies were great as I could always roll them up.
Does anyone have any suggestions!

I’m 5ft 2 and have big thighs, normal everything else. Stretchy skinnies are the best shape for me. All jeans are tight on my thighs, at least skinnies make the most of the good bits. Other styles make me look big all over. I got my first skinny jeans in 1989. I was 11.

I've seen some of my younger colleagues (early 20s) wearing bootcut and looking really good.

LagoDiComo · 21/08/2018 16:42

Agree with a pp, skinnies transcend trends. Even if another type of jeans suits you (I’m very top heavy and should wear flares or at least bootcut) they just aren’t as practical to wear, you’ve got to wear heels or worry about what shoes and then they flap about if it rains

I used to work for Topshop head office until recently and Jamie and Joni jeans (high waisted skinny ankle grazers) are ALWAYS best sellers. Boyfriend style jeans (Topshop mom, Hayden, orson etc) are very popular too but they haven’t surpassed the sales of the skinny styles, if that’s any indication of popularity for you.

Personally I don’t think you’ll go wrong with a black high waisted skinny pair, and a fabulous light wash pair of mom jeans. Both items are very versatile, give completely different looks and can be worn day/night.

hannnnnnnxo · 21/08/2018 17:01

Just noticed that you roll your jeans - mom jeans look very good rolled up, it’s almost how they’re meant to be worn!

Floisme · 21/08/2018 17:02

I don’t believe skinnies are a classic. They were totally out of fashion in the 70s and 90s/early noughties and I’m pretty sure they will fall out again. Jeans change very slowly cos it’s a whole different silhouette so it’s a bit like turning round a juggernaut but wants it starts to I’ve never known it stop. So I would definitely stock up.

If it’s any consolation, they tend come round again more often than some other shapes because they’re so practical in a UK winter. So you may not have to wait that long.

I tried some regular leg jeans on the other day and was utterly horrified at how they looked on me. I looked like my mum!!

I'll stick to my skinnies thanks all the same. I kind of have a uniform of a nice shirt/blouse, skinny jeans and DMs at the moment. I'm hoping for a pair of Dubarry boots from DH for my birthday........ Grin

Errrrrrr · 21/08/2018 17:13

I've just ordered a pair of vintage levi mum jeans from eBay after reading this thread! Expect they will look awful on me. I hate my legs in general and have only just got used to skinny jeans. Same as TomHardysnextwife I look like my mum or at least very boring in straight legs. Hoping mum jeans or boyfriends can make me cool enough to transcend chunky thighs Hmm

Riotgrrrrrl · 21/08/2018 17:29

I can't wait for skinny jeans to fuck off. I'm a pear shaped person and I look like a parsnip in them.

I've been waiting patiently for a long time!

OrdinarySnowflake · 21/08/2018 17:31

The bigger problem is tops are going shorter and tighter, so stopping at the waist. Skinnies only look good with looser tops, and on woman who don't have a flat stomach (as in, most of us...), skinnies need a top that is long enough to cover the top of them.

Not sure I'm ready to give up skinnies, but not going to invest in many as not sure the whole long baggy top and skinnies/jeggings look won't be a very dated look soon.

Basically, bottom halves are tricky!

Notonaschoolnight · 21/08/2018 17:46

Spot on ordinary snowflake the current tops are short or tucked in not a good look with skinnies unless your 17 and a size 10, you need a straight or wide leg to balance the short top out

Elementally · 21/08/2018 18:25

The silhouette is changing from tight bottom loose top to looser bottom tighter top as it was in the 90s for example. The difference this time around is that the look requires a natural 70s style bustline rather than the pushed up 'hello boys' thing of the 90s.

welshmist · 21/08/2018 18:45

Would that be a natural bustline pre three children Grin

God I just got into skinnies very recently after finding the perfect black pair! I'm always (fashionably) behind the times 😀

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 21/08/2018 19:04

Someone ought to tell Primark skinnies are on their way out. I went in the other week to look for a "normal" pair of jeans to cut down to knee length shorts. Nowt but skinnies everywhere I looked.

I asked a sales assistant if they had any normal jeans - the actual phrase I used in absence of another official term! She called them something but I can't remember what! Something like hanging jeans?

I never bought them - they were an awful stone washed colour. I'm very specific about the colour of my denim!

Fresta · 21/08/2018 20:34

Skinnies don't transcend other trends. They were fashionable in the early 1980s and completely disappeared for bout 20 years ( I never saw anyone in tight jeans until Kate moss made them fashionable again in the 2000s). After skinnies in the 80s it was the utility jean with pockets and elasticated cuffs, then baggy jeans, then in the late 80s/early 90s all jeans were high waisted and loosed legged, then came the boot cuts which were fashionable for years- I remember wearing them in the mid 90s through to around 2005 when skinnies came in again.

Fresta · 21/08/2018 20:35

501's are a classic jean if you want something that transcends fashion.

MayFayner · 21/08/2018 20:42

I have a pair of those Uniqlo cigarette jeans and they do have the potential to look super-frumpy- you have to be careful how you style them. I’ll be putting them away for winter as they only really work for me rolled up with very flat open-toe sandals. Also they are huge! They get bigger throughout the day too.

Shenanagins · 21/08/2018 20:55

Hmm, might give the cigarettes a miss and stick with skinnies which are so versatile especially coming autumn/winter in rain soaked Scotland!

That said I did pull out a pair of very old jeans (pre kids) in the hope of pulling off the skinny flare look bug they just looked like a pair of bootcuts! On the positive, they were far to big so every cloud!

I thought mom jeans were the style now, but I'm old and foreign so very happy to stand corrected.

RockinRobinTweets · 21/08/2018 21:02

I’ve bought m&s relaxed slim and really like them but I don’t especially suit skinnies - all I see is knee fat!

MenaMecca · 22/08/2018 07:39

I think anything goes now - which I'm happy about. So wear skinnies if you like them. :)

Floisme · 22/08/2018 07:56

Yeah I think this is one of those crossover times: skinnies are no longer high fashion but it's not clear yet what will will take over so there's every shape under the sun out there. We should enjoy it as I doubt it will last.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 22/08/2018 08:08

I do love a pair of skinnies to wear with boots over winter but i really prefer a flare.

Cant stand high waisted or baggy crotch/arse/thighs jeans.

hammeringinmyhead · 22/08/2018 09:32

I do really miss my Topshop Mooch jeans from the early 00s. They were like slightly flared boyfriends and the most flattering thing ever.
