What's wrong with my nail?

PizzaAndChips · 20/08/2018 20:46

Hello all. Not sure if I have posted in the right place or not, but I am after some advice. For the past year, my middle fingernail has curled down on one side whenever it gets a little bit long. I've attached pictures to give some sort of idea.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do to stop it? I wasn't sure if it was linked to the acrylics I had on (very briefly) last year, but then as it's only on the one nail, that doesn't make sense to me.

Are you anaemic? I'm sure I've read before it's a sign of iron deficiency.

Softpebbles · 20/08/2018 21:19

I have read something recently about this and I think you should get it checked out at the doctors. 😊

XingMing · 20/08/2018 21:36

A chiropodist would be my starting point. They know how to cut nails to help achieve proper regrowth, and will have views on vitamin intake. They are also properly professionally trained, unlike beauticians, many of whom are also highly skilled and very knowledgeable but without the same deep professional outlook.

PizzaAndChips · 20/08/2018 21:37

Ahh, I could be! I was borderline anaemic when pregnant (also last year) so the two could be linked. I'll get it checked out. Thank you both Smile

Hi, @XingMing , thank you for that, but I believe chiropodists deal with feet - these are the nails on my hands Grin

Definitely get it looked over by a go, just to be safe

ShirleyPhallus · 20/08/2018 21:41

I thought it was caused by iron deficiency too

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 21:44

I read this on Facebook within the past two weeks.. please go get it checked as soon as you can.

Pictures attached if you can see them.

PizzaAndChips · 20/08/2018 21:56

Yikes, that does seem extreme! I'm going to call the doctors in the morning.

It seems crazy that such a simple thing can be an indication of a health complaint.

Thanks all.

@JustBeenNosey, I can't see your picture, what does it show?...... My nails have recently done the same thing!..... 😕

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:04

@PizzaAndChips I know!
It might not be the same thing but at least if you get it checked out then you'll know for certain.

It's good that the OP of the Facebook message has done it though the raise awareness as I suspect a lot of people probably have nails like this and don't think anything of it.

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:05

@ItsTheGloaming
I've copied and pasted what's on the original picture I attached.

"##awareness#
2 weeks ago i posted this pic on my wall asking if anyone had seen nails like this. A few google post later and i was urged to go to the Doctor. A tad extreme i thought....
I was rushed for blood tests and a chest xray, 2 days later i got a phone call to go for a CT scan, 2 days later a PET scan and more blood test, the day later a breathing test on my lungs and a scan on my heart, the day later an MRI scan then a lung biopsy.
After a gruelling 2 weeks, yesterday I got my results.......Cancer in both my lungs !!!!.
When your nails curve its often linked to heart and lung disease and its official term is " clubbing" i had no idea....Did You ????
Hope this post can help someone else in the early stages of cancer.
Big shout out to the NHS you have been excellent and I thank all the staff that have dealt with my diagnosis."

The nail is very bent down though compared to the OP's post.
Almost touching the skin again on the fingertip xx

ShirleyPhallus · 20/08/2018 22:10

Christ. Sorry but that Facebook post reads like classic chain mail scaremongering.

PizzaAndChips · 20/08/2018 22:10

@JustBeenNosey

Definitely good to raise awareness, but I think the "clubbing" description isn't really what I have (I hope!). Scary, all the same. I'll report back when I've seen the doctor and been told off for having a terrible diet!

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:14

@PizzaAndChips yeah it does look different but then again I've only seen your picture and the one on Facebook like this so there may be variants in it.

As the other posters say, it might be something to do with a calcium deficiency or something that it making the nail weak but always best to check these things out just to be on the safe side 😊

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:15

@PizzaAndChips sorry.. iron deficiency not calcium 🙈🙈

It's been one of them days haha

Lindy2 · 20/08/2018 22:17

I had this when I was using a typing keyboard a lot. I type with my 2 middle fingers and both nails bent down like that due to the regular touching on the keys. When I stopped typing they grew straight again.
I do think it's sensible to get it checked - I wasn't aware it was a possible illness sign when I had it so I didn't. It was only after they had straightened again that I worked out the cause.

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:18

@Lindy2 I've never noticed it can bend your nails or make them weak by using a keyboard..

But then again, I have acrylics on constantly so I wouldn't know whether my nails bend or go like that 😂🙈

EnidButton · 20/08/2018 22:19

Could be damage to your nailbed growing out maybe. I'd ask a doctor though, rule out anaemia at least.

I'm very impressed with how thick and white the ends of your nails are btw

ItsTheGloaming · 20/08/2018 22:23

Blimey.... Erm I think that I will look into this as a few of my nails are curved right down and this has only happened recently.

JustBeenNosey · 20/08/2018 22:24

@ItsTheGloaming it's best to check it out!
Can you upload a picture at all? And then we'll be able to see how it compares to the one I uploaded from the post that I saw on Facebook xx

LoveGigi · 20/08/2018 23:15

Throughout my life I’ve had this on and off and haven’t thought anything about it. I’ve not had it for the past 3 years though since really taking care of what I eat. Since changing my diet for the better, my nails have been really strong. I would suggest at the time I had bent nails it was a deficiency of sorts. I don’t think it’s a cause for panic.

welshmist · 20/08/2018 23:20

I would see the GP who will check your bloods. Having a baby takes a lot out of you. My friend lost loads of hair and had bald patches that was anaemia.

XingMing · 21/08/2018 09:32
Blush
PizzaAndChips · 21/08/2018 11:25

Well, I won't be finding out today as there were no appointments left at the doctors. Though, I really wouldn't be surprised if I'm anaemic as my diet has been shocking of late.

Must eat spinach for tea!
