Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Mini review, as I don't have any advice and haven't changed anything lately.

For anyone wanting a gentle clay mask to help with SFs in particular, I'm really impressed with the grey Vichy one.
It's the Pore Purifying Clay mask. £15 usually but £11.25 atm from a couple of online places (look fantastic is one).
Chunky weighty glass pot so you do have to dip fingers in but I prefer that to a tube as it doesn't waste any product. (Hopefully fingers are scrupulously clean before you use it anyway.)
I only use it on my chin and my nose. My cheeks and forehead don't respond well to clay but on those two oilier places this one works really well. It's the only clay mask that doesn't feel super drying and makes a visible difference after a couple of uses.
I hadn't used it for a while and my nose felt 'gritty' and was covered in visible grey dots (sebaceous filaments), I've used this 3 times in the past 10 days and my nose is much smoother and most of the SFs have gone. I'll try to keep up with it so they don't fill up again. So I'd highly recommend trying it if a clay mask is on anyone's list.

EnidButton · 20/08/2018 19:24

Should add, I do use a hydrating serum on my snout very night, as well as a thin layer of cicaplast (of course 😬) which combats any flakey skin I get there. So I can't comment on how drying the clay mask is. It doesn't feel harsh or drying like a lot of masks do, it's gentle, but obviously it's still clay so it's something to be aware of.

SophieLion · 20/08/2018 19:35

Snout GrinGrinEnid (sorry nothing useful to add but that made me laugh out loud)

SallieSallow · 20/08/2018 20:03

I'm laughing at snout and the premature ejaculator Grin GrinGrin

Bo I do remember you saying that about the GOW Vit c and it's dodgy pump now, I might leave it as premature ejaculating would annoy me too. My problem with Vit c is the stronger ones (which I presume actually Do Something) make me itchy, I'm fine with the milder ones like the active formulas 15% but I don't see any results. I might just have to accept Vit C is my skincare nemesis and give up.

Enid I'm just about to re-order Vichy 89 and the thermal water spray, so might try that clay mask for my snout Grin though I'm not much good at remembering to use face masks, I've still got a Una Brennan clay mask almost untouched and I did really like that when I actually used it!

EnidButton · 20/08/2018 20:05

🐽

(I won't do the emojis for premature ejaculator...)

SophieLion · 20/08/2018 20:11

😂😂 Enid 🐷🐷

botemp · 20/08/2018 20:35

I'm just saying this now, I will not be including ejaculating snouts alongside sperm and Spock brows in the next thread title as I fear MNHQ will make us live long and prosper in the sex topic Blush what is the official ejaculation emoji?

Have you considered the C(E) tetra from Medik8, Sallie, it's very mild and I got very good results with that, which was quite remarkable as it's a derivative.

I like that mask too, Enid. I relied on it a lot in the heat to clear out he oxidation of my pores, used it after P50 and it was as good (possibly better) than glamglow. Quick too, I have a teeny tiny sample pot that's unlikely to run out soon but I do have two sachets of it too which you can buy for a euro each here. I'm pretty sure one of those would fill up the jar again.

SallieSallow · 20/08/2018 20:48

I think the ejaculating emoji is a courgette and something - I'm sure I've seen it on Mumsnet before but yes Bo you are right we don't want to end up on the sex topic Shock I'd probably best stop mentioning my sperm brows too Grin

I'll have a look at that one from Medik 8 now Bo I think it was on my shortlist before but went for the AF in the end as it was cheaper.

I might see if I can get some samples of the clay mask, Vichy send free samples when you order direct from their website and very decent sizes too, though they're more expensive than the other sites right now as no offers on currently.

EnidButton · 20/08/2018 22:09

seen it on mumsnet begore

Yeah yeah Sallie that's where you've seen it...

(You're right btw. I had to explain the aubergine emoji to a friend earlier who was using it willy nilly thinking it meant 'feeling enthusiastic' Confused I mean I suppose it kind of does but..)

SallieSallow · 20/08/2018 22:34

Using it willy nilly is quite apt though Enid Grin and 😂 😂😂 at feeling enthusiastic!

I'm a bit dim with emojis so I definitely learnt about the courgette/aubergine here, there was a thread on chat or Aibu where people were 'chatting' in emojis, it was very entertaining.

TantricTwist · 20/08/2018 22:35

I would've gone with 🍆🎉 seems much more, ahem, enthusiastic feeling

May have to include feeling enthusiastic into the next thread title

Agree the Vichy clay mask is great. I love glam glow in the small white pot for sebaceous filaments too. It has a lot of acid in so I think it has an extra kick but it is massively overpriced.
Thanks again for all the recommendations. Very helpful.
Can anyone comment on what they do o. Under eye circles - I like mine and work in France a lot so I think they are more normal there. But in the UK they are covered! What do people do? I currently don’t cover them.

botemp · 21/08/2018 07:30

Yes, yes, to glamglow being massively overpriced, no need to pay that much for the addition of loose tea leaves Hmm

I've noticed that too in Paris. I'm not a massive fan of cover up makeup as you lose all dimension in the face and then you need even more makeup to fake that dimension back in again.

Saying all that, I do like the brightening effect of a concealer, I think that's also why I like the Sisley one, it's not a putty like eraser, just takes the harshest blue out and blends in with my skin tone and it fades during the day without it looking like your makeup is wearing off.

Connie5858 · 21/08/2018 12:35

My skin is looking good.
Thank you for all the wonderful advice.
It’s got to the stage now I’m just using a bit of foundation where I need it.
However with all the layers of skincare products I do seem to have a shine. Years ago I used bare minerals - mineral veil.
Do any of you have a shine and how to you cover it without to much makeup .
Thanks

SallieSallow · 21/08/2018 18:48

Grin Grin Grin at the 🍆 I think it was 💦 that I'd seen too but yes it does seem a bit incontinent Hmm

Look fantastic have samples of the Vichy clay mask for a couple of £ so I'm going to try it. Agree about glamglow being very overpriced - and leafy!

Connie I have oily skin (though it's a lot less oily than it used to be!) so am prone to shine, if you don't want to use a mattifying powder then blotting papers are probably your best bet - but they work by absorbing/blotting oil, not sure if you are actually oily or not?

www.lookfantastic.com/dhc-blotting-paper-100-sheets/11207510.html

EnidButton · 21/08/2018 19:59

Connie I just use a bit of talc free translucent powder on my t-zone and blot excess off with a beauty blender (sponge). I think the moisturiser I use (lrp toleriane) isnt particularly shiny one but I do get a slightly oily t-zone so just reapply the powder very lightly when needed. I think some shine looks good though. Totally matte isn't for me.

EnidButton · 21/08/2018 20:02

Sallie if it's the same one I got from there, in a gift bag offer, it's a decent sized little pot. Lasted me ages.

Biologifemini · 21/08/2018 21:43

Sisley concealer sounds lovely, if rather expensive.
I currently don’t use anything, just a few dots of erborian cc cream if I am going out and need to look better.
Clinique matte hydrater is the best for shine. I have a shiny forehead and occasionally nose and it lasts all day.

JDSTER · 21/08/2018 22:24

Well this last page has made me Grin

Thanks Enid for Vichy clay mask recommendation. I’ll be looking for a new one soon.

connie I like innis free no sebum mineral powder. I have oily skin and have tried lots of powders over the years and I like this one a lot. Easy to purchase on amazon, eBay etc. I use blotting papers during the day.

Connie5858 · 22/08/2018 17:50

Ah thank you so much for your advice.
I know what you mean enid
About some shine looks good
I will try the eeconendations

botemp · 22/08/2018 17:55

Connie, what SPF are you using? I usually find this to be the culprit of shininess. I don't mind it in winter but in summer I prefer a slightly mattifying one.
