There's a similar portrait at Sandringham which was done around the same time as Diana's death (1997-1999). Harry is doing a jigsaw with the Queen Mother and William is at the front staring angrily at the artist /us.

herecomesthsun · 19/08/2018 13:01

Presumably not this one?

Maybe it is. I saw it a while ago. Anyway, my interpretation (then and now) is that William is a remote figure to the rest of the fun and games.

herecomesthsun · 19/08/2018 13:39

It looks a lot jollier and more Barbara-Cartland-esque than the Swedish version, which could be a poster for a horror movie.

William is just musing on the social challenges of being the nation's heart-throb., before he meets the next pretty girl. Musing, in a handsome and eligible way.

SenecaFalls · 19/08/2018 13:49

The funniest thing about that picture is that it is supposed to be relatively casual and yet the Queen Mum is wearing her hat in the house.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 14:43

William is just musing on the social challenges of being the nation's heart-throb.

Poor William, the challenge didn't last very long!

QueenOfTheAndals!! Ha ha 😂
Poor William, started off as a floppy haired teen heart throb and now he looks like someone you'd avoid at a garden centre.

Clionba · 19/08/2018 15:41

Well, my royal style friends, I've just got to say what a brilliant thread this is. I've just seen that Royal Denmark portrait - yikes!!! They all look /drug crazed/drunk/insane! It's weirdly brilliant and very Scandinavian.
The Royal Brit painting is also weird, but in another way, as if they don't quite know who to look at or what to say. Or remark on William's waistcoat Hmm

VanillaSugar · 19/08/2018 15:42

^^ ROFL Grin poor guy.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 15:51

Oh William what happened?

Queen Margrethe is my new style icon. She's fantastic! and I love that she wore that table cloth coat more than once too. Very up on recycling, that is.

Poor William, he was such a broody, boy next door heart throb wasn't he. I think it was all downhill from about the age of 21 onwards.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 16:30

William looked extraordinarily like Diana when he was younger, but appears to grow more and more like Charles with the passing of each year.

Clionba · 19/08/2018 16:33

Margrethe is my new style icon too, and an intelligent, creative woman as well! She looks like she has fun with clothes but some of them are quite theatrical, which suits her role. I bet she's great company.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 16:59

Harry was overshadowed by William when he was younger, but has really hit his stride in his 30s. He seems to have come into his own with the Invictus Games and AIDS charity work he does, and has blossomed even more since the advent of Meghan.

Yes William looks like the soul has been sucked out of him. I think he loved his helicopter job but was more or less obliged to give it up to step up in the RF due to the Queen's failing energy levels. I don't think he enjoys being limited and seems to be going through the motions these days. He appears to be going through the motions much of the time. I feel sorry for him. Harry seems to have matured and come into his own, but he does't look like he's enjoying himself much these days. He used to have a boyish charm.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 17:22

Can't say I feel too sorry for William. He could give it all up if he really wanted to. God knows he has enough money from Diana to ensure that he'd never go hungry!

OP posts:
lightonthewater · 19/08/2018 18:00

How do you think he could just give it all up Queen? He's next in line to be King after Charles. It's what he's been born to do! I am sure he would love to give it all up, but he has a sense of responsibility.

Watchingtheworldgoby · 19/08/2018 19:01

He could of course give it up and do away with the RF altogether. If the Windsors don’t want it, the Yorks would step in anyway so it wouldn’t disappear. Charles wants it. William wants it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 19:14

It's been done before, albeit by a slightly dodgy character. William
seems to enjoy the perks but doesn't enjoy the legwork so much. But he'll have to suck it up - he leads a life of incredible privilege, so I can't feel too sorry for him!

OP posts:
lightonthewater · 19/08/2018 19:15

I don't think it works quite like that! You just don't walk out of something like that. The Queen would be devastated for one thing. He loves his Grandmother and has respect for the traditions he has been born into.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/08/2018 19:24

Well then he needs to just put up with it. A few days work per month is what he currently does - hardly anything to complain about! It'll be at least 20 years before he gets to the throne, given the Windsor longevity. Barring a nasty accident, we are looking at a chain of OAP monarchs for the foreseeable future.

OP posts:
VanillaSugar · 19/08/2018 19:44

Is it called Fatherhood, perchance? Wink

SenecaFalls · 19/08/2018 21:22

If the Windsors don’t want it, the Yorks would step in anyway so it wouldn’t disappear.

There are some Windsors who might want it. Charlotte comes to mind.

susurration · 19/08/2018 22:18

well this took a turn...
