Are these shorts really unflattering?

Forever in search of a pair of shorts that fit me right. Popped into Jack Wills today a shame normally they have lovely items in stock there.
I bought these shorts, in my usual size 8. Took them home and didn't try them on as I buy quite a lot from there and was confident about sizing.
Just tried them on, expecting them to be fitted everywhere. However, the shorts are really loose around the groin area! Almost baggy?! This is particularly noticeable when you walk in them. Is there anyway I could fix this, or are these shorts just now made for me!? I definitely couldn't go down a size, as they would be too tight on the waist.
Here's a picture of them.

Very unflattering imo Hmm

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 05/07/2018 18:24

They're dire unless you're 15 years old AND sylph-like.

HeGotManFlu · 05/07/2018 18:28

They are passable if you're about 14

Okaassan · 05/07/2018 18:30

A 6 would likey be a great fit so worth seeing if you can exchange them. Have you tried seeing what size ASOS think would be your perfect size by using the fitting tool?.

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 18:30

Okay, I may be taking these back then soon. Honestly, they did look nice in the shop ! Really don't understand what is wrong with the fit.
Please can someone recommend me some good shorts. I'm getting desperate. I'm a pear shape, small waist and big hips/thighs

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 18:31

Yes they have a pink pair still in stock on asos, and it still says size 8 was the best fit for me. I really think a size 6 would be too small, but I may have to check next week.

HeGotManFlu · 05/07/2018 18:35

Big hips and thighs?, are you a size 8 in trousers.

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 18:37

I'm size 10 usually, waist 28 in jeans.

Im pear shaped and really stuggle with shorts, always end up with a crotch tent and they get tight on my thighs and loose on the waist?
Maybe try going up a size? I know it sounds counterintuitive but they might sit better.
I like them and if they looked nice on me i would buy them, can only really say if they look unflattering if its a picture of you

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 18:59

I've managed to get a photo of me in them. Be honest! I think they look alright from the side, but terrible from the front. I do have a top on, i just pulled it up so people could see the fit, also the labels are the white blur on the top right of the shorts. Sorry that the pictures aren't quite unclear.

They don’t look great but don’t look awful either. Just look like casualxstuff you’d throw on to Potter around the house.
Nice stomach tho OP, jealous!!

EvilMorty · 05/07/2018 19:07

They are so 80’s. I didn’t wear any denim then because the cut was always weirdly baggy and tight on me. It’s not you, it’s the shorts.

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 19:09

Yes, they are baggy and tight at the same time. It's so weird! Think I might be returning them .

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 19:11

You look lovely but the shorts don't. Return them. Do you have a pair of jeans you can cut into shorts?

hugoagogo · 05/07/2018 19:13

They look totally normal.
They are described as 'girlfriend' so won't be clingy. If you are used to skinny jeans and shorts, they probably look and feel a bit strange.

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 19:14

Good idea. I feel that doesn't work...any ideas for good shorts?

OP posts:
AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 19:14

Sorry, not I feel that doesn't work. I meant IF that doesn't work, any good shorts a a back up?

OP posts:
Dljlr · 05/07/2018 19:16

Oh god I have a pair that do that baggy crotch thing too, and I never wear them out cos I'm so conscious of it. No advice re decent shorts as I tend to look shite in them but have some empathy!

AbFabQueen · 05/07/2018 19:16

I just don't understand how they are so baggy! They look lovely off me / on the hanger 😂

OP posts:
soulrider · 05/07/2018 19:19

They're described as high waisted but they're sitting below your belly button, which is probably why you feel like there's loads of extra material as they're not sat where they're meant to be.

Can't wait for this high waisted trend to end, rarely looks good on anyone.

Itchytights · 05/07/2018 19:22

You have a lovely figure but the shorts do nothing for you.

They are very 1980s aka Kevin Keegan imo.

Please return them and buy some that flatter you.

PeckhamPauline · 05/07/2018 19:22

That's why you should always try stuff on and never trust photos! Fashion photographers use all kinds of tricks, including pinning clothes to make them look more 'fitted'.

Redrunbluerun · 05/07/2018 19:23

I think you look great in them... your slim legs look even skinnier because of the slight baggy ness. I have a pair like this and they’re slimming. I’d stick with them!
