What are your secrets/tips please?

I am cynical of all these people saying they look ten years younger! If you go around asking people your age they are always going to undercut it by at least five so as to not potentially offend.

I think the aim should more be to look good for your age rather than young. I’d say I look pretty good - slim figure, good skin, dress well - but I’d be deluding myself if I thought I looked much younger than 42.

There's the impression of youth (at a bit of distance) which seems to me to relate to weight, style and attitude. I guess this is looking youthful. I don't think I look youthful though but I am told by a number of unrelated people that my face doesn't age.

I keep out of the sun because I don't like it. I wear a good sunblock, drink lots of water, no alcohol, I've never smoked, I have some weight on me and my face perhaps benefits. I change my skincare whenever it gets irritated and I never skip twice a day cleansing and moisturising. I don't look young and trendy though. I would look better if I were slimmer and weight ages you at least from a distance. I don't carrying much on my face. If you do this adds droop and is aging.

I don't think our parents / grandparents chose to graduate to perms and twinsets at 40. They just carried on wearing what they'd always worn - it was young people who moved on. I think the only difference now is that there haven't been any seismic changes in fashion in the last couple of decades - young people seem for the most part to be quite happy wearing pretty much the same clothes as their parents. If and when that changes, we're all toast.

rightknockered · 30/06/2018 11:03

This is me this morning, dressed(might change it is very hot), being brave. I don't look young for my age, but I look decent enough. A lot of my friends look like me, we all dress similarly. I think it is true that no one looks middle aged anymore really.
(Please ignore mess in utility, actually no, I don't give a shit)

Pity the pic is so blurred.

OCSock · 30/06/2018 11:45

I'm sure you're right about our grandparents Flo. I have a picture of mine, taken in their 80s (in the late 80s) wearing their lawn bowls competition wear and they look great. Fit, smart and, because of the uniform, almost timeless.

Floisme · 30/06/2018 12:06

Yup - I don't think I look any better than my mum and my aunts did at the same age. I've just been lucky in that I haven't been caught up in a fashion revolution like they were.

lastnightidreamtofpotatoes · 30/06/2018 12:15

I'm not 40 yet but don't look good and need to make more of an effort. By chance I recently used a coarse flannel to wash my face and couldn't believe how fresh and radiant I looked for an hour. I am coming on to this board more often now to get myself into gear, ordered the Korean body towel thing yesterday.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 30/06/2018 13:20

I agree that it’s silly to try and look younger .
Just look well for your age is a decent target

JemmimaJ · 30/06/2018 18:21

How old are you Rightknockered

rightknockered · 30/06/2018 18:42

Im 46 Jemima. I absolutely look my age.

JemmimaJ · 30/06/2018 19:49

You look lovely Right.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/06/2018 19:55

Fags and booze mainly.

And sleeping with my make-up on.

Plus lard, lots of lard.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/06/2018 20:01

Plus I always tell people I'm a few years older than I actually am so they can tell me how fabulous I look.

JemmimaJ · 30/06/2018 20:19

Haha

SemiAquaticEggLayingMammal · 30/06/2018 23:17

I'm in the minority too. I'm often told that I look mid thirties rather than my actual mid forties. Genes aren't amazing, my mum and dad look their age- I smoke (not everyday but sometimes) and I am overweight, I don't always eat especially healthily and I don't exercise. I dont take my makeup off at night, or v rarely, but I do wear moisturiser and foundation EVERYDAY and have done since my teens. Plus I'm ginge so I'm wary of getting burnt- it would seem that avoiding the sun has taken a few years off me.

But outlook is really important too I think. I think happy and therefore I hope I look Happy, and happy people always have more positive views of them I think.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 01/07/2018 01:07

I think happy makes for best looks.

Myrnafoy · 01/07/2018 18:40

Let's be honest here If you mention your age, people will never say that you absolutely look it will they Confused ? Out of politeness they will feign surprise as I have done myself !

Grammarist · 01/07/2018 18:54

Good genes, no smoking, not much alcohol, lots of water, not much sun.

I don't wear makeup much, don't use lots of skin products as I reckon 90% are a con and I'd rather not line the pockets of big companies. Make my own natural skincare things and my own shampoo/conditioner bars.

Eat a fairly healthy diet. Walk everywhere.
Don't do other exercise as I just don't have the time.

friendlyflicka · 01/07/2018 19:02

there is a truth about weight. I am quite small and at 51 I am not wrinkled, haven't gone grey, I have olive skin and good genes.

But over the winter this year, I lost about half a stone due to worry about a few horrible life situations, and I looked much older. My face looked very gaunt and my skin lost its bounce completely. I looked hollow under the eyes.

So having once been an anorexic and always someone who is careful about food intake, I have realised that at this age, there is definitely a point below which I look less good in the face.
