What are your secrets/tips please?

My mother is a size 8 and has good slender ankles. She also has a pair of leather trpousers that she wears with a cream silk blouse (tucked in). She wears them with peep toe black patent heels. She has her hair highlighted blonde and has it well cut.

She's 82. Could pass for late 60s. I've always wanted to be as trendy as my mother.

My grandma didn't own a pair of slacks as she called them and was most comfortable in either jodhpurs or a ball gown. There wasn't much inbetween but she bought nice day frocks from a dress shop in the nearest big town that did good alterations for when she had to wear a frock. She also wore a corset and long line bra underneath a frock.

She was v middle aged in comparison to today. That was her style in her late 40s and she had money to spend on herself. Hairdresser twice a week but it was a shampoo and set. The funny thing I remember is the posh evening glasses with diamante - she had a pink pair and a blue pair depending on what she wore.

She was probably quite modern for her time. Mid/late 60s. A cross between the Queen mother and Clarissa Dickson Wright.

I’ve been reliably informed —by two different 7 year olds— that I look 27. They're very clever children, always welcome for a playdate Wink.
I’m 35.

camelfinger · 26/06/2018 21:11

At work I’ve observed people go overboard with mock surprise upon being told of someone’s real age. I think they’re just being kind though.

Serendipite · 26/06/2018 21:29

My mom is in her early 60s and can pass for early 50s. She has long hair, and dresses youthfully. Ripped jeans, tshirt, converse/Nike/Adidas.

Re: boxy figures, not sure about that, I think big hips and big boobs (especially sagging?) are more ageing? I’m 5’8 12.5 rectangle shaped with really small chest but they’re perky so I think they make me seem younger.

Also eyes. Biggish eyes, not really large but you know, bigger and and the wide-eyed look. Thick straight-ish brows.

I also don’t wear makeup.

SallyVating · 27/06/2018 03:09

Stay a bit fat.

Other wise fluke

Itsmeaga1n · 27/06/2018 03:27

I think its genetic. People have guessed my age as more than ten years less than I actually am (I'm in my fifties) but I rarely remember to use face cream, don't use sun block, don't wear make up, don't have a particularly healthy diet, I smoked for over twenty years. However my mum and my daughter also look young for their age ...

Candyflip · 27/06/2018 03:28

I drink far too much alcohol, eat shit and have never exercised. So I would say my good skin is down to ridiculous amounts of sleep and avoiding the sun. I think it is easy now to not have wrinkles as skincare all contains sunscreen, but the underlying bone structure is what makes people look much younger. That is all down to my genes.

TypicallyNorthern · 27/06/2018 08:22

Keep stress low. Don't sweat small stuff. Keep toxic people and their politics and games at arms length. Most people who look older do so because of stress and it's toll.

The skin on your face is the most important part of your body. Treat it with respect with a good skin routine and do not smoke.

Don't eat crap. You wouldn't put the cheapest petrol with bits of junk in your car because it would seize up. Why people do it to their bodies is beyond me.

Exercise. I just started running 4 weeks ago and last Sunday I turned up to an event and did a 10K run with a hangover in a good time. It was the first time I ever did this. At 49 that is great. I can do this because I have kept myself fit and healthy.

Have fun, laugh a lot and don't take yourself seriously. Have a good sense of humour. Love your friends and family. Be a nice person. It all shows on your face.

Floisme · 27/06/2018 08:48

I've aged quite a lot in the last few years. People still persist in telling me I look younger. It's all well meaning horseshit.

I agree with Sock - keep tweaking your style.

fishonabicycle · 27/06/2018 09:10

Enjoy yourself! That helps - I spend time socially with my children's friends on occasion - they keep me young. Eat well, don't drink a lot.

IfNot · 27/06/2018 09:28

I have only ever met maybe 3 people in my whole life who I genuinely think look much younger than they are, so I'm sceptical..I know I look about 40 (which isn't a bad age to be), but I have had those kind of comments too where people act all surprised. I'm not buying it!
Anyway I smoked, drank like a sailor and took all the drugs for years so it wouldn't really be fair!
My best anti aging tip is never look in the mirror with your glasses on and have as much sex as possible with younger men.

You're welcome.

Amber0685 · 27/06/2018 09:37

I'm quite amazed here by the number of people saying stay out of the sun. I grew up in Australia where sun damage is horrific so good to see people here realize it too.

ExConstance · 27/06/2018 11:27

For me, partly genetic and partly down to plenty of sleep, not much alcohol, keeping out of the sun and not smoking. I take HRT and do a variety of exercise, including running, boot camp and yoga.
Having your children late helps a bit, people simply assume you are a few years younger than you are. I have my hair coloured with lots and lots of high and low lights to be a normal light brown. I wear exactly what I want, which includes a lot of stuff from Top shop and really hate those threads that begin "I'm 34 am I too old to wear......."
Fairly natural make up with no really bright lipstick and nails. Being the right weight ( thin enough to tuck your top in, not so skinny as to be very wrinkly and gaunt) is also good. I'm 61, people always express surprise and say I don't look it when they find out. I don't particularly try to look younger than I am, but I do care about looking and feeling good.

Neweternal · 27/06/2018 11:32

People are always surprised when I say my age. No idea botox, make up, clothes and I'm childish and girlie. Less stress helps, stress ages you big time.

Olinguito · 27/06/2018 11:46

Hair, make up and clothes that accentuate my better features and camouflage the worst ones!

I think people do generally look better for their age these days, so perhaps our concept of what certain ages look like will gradually shift.

In my early twenties I worked abroad and met quite a few aussie girls. They had obviously been outdoors loads because their skin was already weathered looking, they all looked far older than they were.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/06/2018 07:10

Same as all the above really ! I am
44 and still get (a few ) compliments Grin

And it’s been since I kick started my exercise , no booze , no sugar plant based lifestyle

Actually once you get used to it it’s not so bad

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/06/2018 07:21

I dress quite youngish probably like 40-50, I'm 60 so from the back probably look young, well 40-50, my hair is slightly grey and I am tall and slimmish. Unfortunately my face definitely looks 60 at least Grin

OCSock · 29/06/2018 21:09

In real life, I look decent for my age (nearly 62). That's largely genetic as my family on both sides are long lived, and have wonderful skin. Happily, I inherited that. People I know well enough to trust to be honest seem to think I am somewhere in the 50s age range if they don't know my DOB, but it's a ranging guess more than a judgement. So if I have cheated five or so years grace from 'old lady', it's a result. More important, I adore clothes and fashion since I was 14 and why should that alter with age? I dress differently, but not for the comfort of an elastic waistband and endless cake, but because you have to acknowledge that gravity takes a toll on the body and your assets can become liabilities.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 29/06/2018 21:24

I think I look good for 55. I have attached a very recent photo from May this year for you to judge.

I don’t smoke. I’m mostly vegetarian because my husband is allergic to meat so do very occasionally eat meat when I’m out but predominantly vegetarian. I do drink and only use sun screen when on holiday.

I’ve moisturised my face every day since about 16, always remove my make up and currently love Liz Earle make up remover in the green pump action bottle.

I laugh lots, love my life and thank my parents for decent genes.

If you look good for your age
Clinicallysilly · 29/06/2018 23:14

Iamtryingtobenicehere you look bloody amazing for 55! I'm 15 years younger than you but look 20 years older than you!

That lippy colour looks fabulous on you.

LuMarie · 30/06/2018 02:21

@Iamtryingtobenicehere

Get right outta town!

I actually don't think I believe you:)

JeezYouLoon · 30/06/2018 03:30

Good genes and a positive, not taking life too seriously attitude.

echt · 30/06/2018 04:24

Genes. Thank you mum for the bone structure.

English skin: Aussies queue up to say how fab it is, so less sun.

Not smoking.

Billydessert · 30/06/2018 07:43

Yes no one is going to say 'oh I thought you were 10 years older' when you tell them your age!
Totally agree that there isn't an 'older look' anymore. We don't all go for a perm and set and don house coats over 40 these days. So I just don't think it's easy to tell.

Harking back to the recent Staircase thread; that was a very good example of how poor nutrition, stress and sedentary lifestyle is aging! Very dramatic change after 8 years in prison! (Sorry for spoiler)
