Am I the only one that thinks midi length is unflattering?

This horrible length reminds me of the skirts my mum wore through the 90s! They look rubbish on me.. and most people I see them on!
Am I the only one thinking this? I went shopping looking for maxi skirts or knee-length but was thwarted in most shops!

They are much more flattering in the summer when I can’t wear opaque tights as they cover up my knee fat!
I am tall and struggle to find any in the shops!

JessiCake · 04/06/2018 20:09

Another tall, fairly slim person here who loves midi, sorry! I'm 5 foot 8 and about a size 10, if statistics help!

I have embarrassingly skinny legs, I feel ridiculous in Maxi, but Midi somehow works. Also it's only something I've discovered as I've got older, I probably wouldn't have been interested in trying a midi length before, but I'm 41 now and in summer I like nothing more than a floaty midi length. Looks good and low-maintenance on the tan/epilation front!

CountFosco · 04/06/2018 20:13

I think knee length is the most difficult because it is absolutely dependant on the length of your legs and an inch or two or three too long looks terrible (spot the shorty). Minis are my favourite (and you are never too old for a mini, my grandmother rocked a mini at my Christening when she was in her 60s). Midis tend to be more like maxis on my short legs but I think I look OK in them (5'2" hourglass). Which reminds me, I need a green t-shirt to go with one I've had for years to update it a bit.

MulberryPeony · 04/06/2018 20:27

I’m short and have a multitude of different style of midis and cropped wide trousers. Often get the most compliments when wearing them so they must hit me at the right point? I wear them with boots, wedges, kitten heels (another marmite on mumsnet) and flat sandals. Also love maxi length skirts and dresses just to buck the trend.

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/06/2018 20:42

I love midi dresses and skirts - 5ft 6 and a size 10. In winter I wear short skirts with opaques, but wouldn’t bare my knees in summer. For years I only wore trousers in summer. Now I embrace my bare legs! Maxi dresses look daft on me, and I think they are generally difficult to wear in terms of the balance between beachy and weddingy.

KatharinaRosalie · 04/06/2018 20:52

I have embarrassingly skinny legs, I feel ridiculous in Maxi, but Midi somehow works - this pretty much summarises. Midi finishes at the widest part of your calf and makes them look wider. Works on skinny legs. I already have strong calves and look horrible in midis.

TheOrigFV45 · 04/06/2018 21:05

Tall and very slim and that length suits me really well.

Bugjune · 04/06/2018 21:39

Can those who like it please link to the kind of thing they're talking about. In theory it should work for me, I refuse to be beaten!!!

MissTulipan · 04/06/2018 21:40

I totally agree, I really don’t suit them. I love a nice knee length skirt and can’t find any decent ones. I’m tall and slim (ish) the midi length is very unflattering on me

BeeMyBaby · 04/06/2018 21:45

I love midis, I'm 5ft2 and it means they are long but I don't trip over them like a maxi skirt. And I get loadsa compliments (plus m&s makes them with massive pockets. Yay!)

missymousey · 04/06/2018 22:35

I'm tall and slim and they make me look as frumpy as my mum. No thank you!

TheOrigFV45 · 05/06/2018 09:21

Bugjune
Here you are.

Am I the only one that thinks midi length is unflattering?
KatharinaRosalie · 05/06/2018 09:49

When we talk about midis, in my head I look like this:

In reality I look more like this

lindyloo57 · 05/06/2018 12:04

Theorigfv is that a midi ? in my eyes its a just past the knee style

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/06/2018 12:14

Katherina I agree, but also to add if you’re like me and have not so slim legs but very skinny ankles, a longer length midi looks great especially is it’s got a fuller skirt (not a fitted one) because it shows off the slimmest part of the legs.

Carboholic · 05/06/2018 12:21

I have looked about 45 in them since I was 12. I'm reasonably tall but have proportionally short legs, if that makes sense, and when I wear one I look like I'm about to hand you a leaflet saying that Jesus loves you.

DrowningEveryDay · 05/06/2018 13:00

Also works for short plus sized - at least, some bloggers I've seen look really cute in them.

DrowningEveryDay · 05/06/2018 13:03

She wears a lot of midi length and it always looks cute on her.

halfwitpicker · 05/06/2018 13:06

They look fine with heels. I'm 5'5.

halfwitpicker · 05/06/2018 13:08

FWIW I do have slim calves though. Not a stealth boast BTW because above my knees they looks like mature oaks.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/06/2018 13:11

TheOrig that looks great but it's not midi length. Midi is designed to finish in the middle of knee and ankle- mid calf.

Going by this, it suits anyone who wants their legs to look wider and more shapely.
If you wish your legs were thinner, don't touch midi skirts with a bargepole.

I think the pleated ones are frumpy, although I can't stand the whole Lindy bop look of tight waist and flary midlength skirt with heels usually worn by overweight fashion bloggers.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/06/2018 13:14

I never choose clothes with the intention of looking "cute". I can't understand why any adult would. Confused

TheOrigFV45 · 05/06/2018 13:27

[shrug] OK. I do have very long legs. I have large runners' calves, which I'm quite happy with. You cannot see them in that pic.

Pretty sure I got it from the mini section in Asos.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/06/2018 13:31

Yes I suppose it would be midi length on someone with shorter legs Orig? I think it looks far better on you. I love a slim fit that cuts off just below the knee, that's a really flattering look.

MinaPaws · 05/06/2018 13:31

I'm short (5'4" and very chubby but I love midis. Always have. They hide my white sausage legs, showing just the bit near the ankle where they finally slim down, and it's not enough white flesh on view to frighten the horses. I have a few plain linen A line ones and some crepe de chine patterned ones.
