Am I the only one that thinks midi length is unflattering?

This horrible length reminds me of the skirts my mum wore through the 90s! They look rubbish on me.. and most people I see them on!
Am I the only one thinking this? I went shopping looking for maxi skirts or knee-length but was thwarted in most shops!

I think if you're tall, they look amazing.

I'm short and have proportionately small legs, so they are just a no no for me! The most flattering length for me is just on/above the knee (ie mini skirts on most other people!)

Floisme · 04/06/2018 09:07

I hate to break it to you but there's nothing in the shops at the moment that your mothers won't have worn.

As for midis, I think it's more about where they end on your leg than how tall you are. I'd only wear calf length with knee boots. In summer I like them to end right at the top of my ankle (same place as my cropped trousers). I'm short so this tends to be where they end on me anyway. I guess if you're being pedantic this isn't midi length but it's not maxi either - let's call it mixi.

I just looked myself up and down and realised I remember my mother wearing outfits extremely similar to my current get up! But some things really stick in the mind, and because my mother had a similar figure to mine, midi length didn't suit her either.

Floisme · 04/06/2018 09:28

I agree it's trickier than knee length because we all have different shaped lower legs so you have to faff around more to find the length that works for you. Or just wait a couple of months and wear boots.

The funny thing is that my mum is only 5'2" if that & midi skirts in the shops now are almost a maxi length on her!

I'm less than 5'4" & I liked the Melissa dress from Monsoon, it has a handkerchief hem & unfortunately the corners of the hem touched the floor so I couldn't buy it, never mind.

zippyswife · 04/06/2018 09:44

I’m tall. I love them. Just bought my first one!

Mrs9C · 04/06/2018 09:46

They look great on the right person, otherwise they look frumpy. Sadly I'm in the frumpy group, they really do look good on those who suit them, jealous!

newdocket · 04/06/2018 10:00

I think they look lovely if you have slender ankles and calves. For me this matters more than how tall you are.

rightknockered · 04/06/2018 10:21

I think my main problem is the amount of fabric. I have two, that are not too wide, one is pleated and the other is a wrap type, which look good, I'm very slight, and some midi skirts are just too wide for me. I find this with a lot of a-line skirts in general though. I also have a jersey pencil skirt that ends below the knee which looks nice on me. To find a decent midi skirt you need to spend over £60, I think. (Not completely sure about this, and would love to find cheaper)

RedLily84 · 04/06/2018 10:24

Oh! Gosh so I have amazing legs from knees down! The rest of my legs (although less so now) are cellulite ridden trunks. But I have the slimmest of calves ankles. So midi looks fine on me. I think although I’m only 5ft 4 and a size 16 but I think it looks ok. It’s trendy now which is helpful.

DuchyDuke · 04/06/2018 10:25

I love midis and am 5 7 size 12/14. Yes they can look frumpy but as long as the colour of the dress / skirt is nice, it fits properly at the waist, and you wear red lippy, it’s fine.

Paintbox · 04/06/2018 10:43

I wear them loads and love them. I’m 5’8” and they’re by far the best length on me. Nothing pleated though.

raspberrycordial · 04/06/2018 10:57

Flattering on me (in my head at least) as being a short arse they cover my chunky calves and only show my nicely turned, even if I do say so myself ankles.

BadTasteFlump · 04/06/2018 11:06

Midi length suits me, as does knee length or just above.

I'm tall and reasonably slim - maxi length is awful on me, I just see one long expanse like I'm wearing a curtain. I need a bit of leg to break it up a bit.

Notmorewashing · 04/06/2018 11:34

I love them, I hate worrying about exposing when bending over or sitting down on mini dresses/ skirts.

TeaAddict235 · 04/06/2018 11:49

I find them frumpy, especially the ones with the ripple pleats...Oh Father no! Coupled with those nasty sandles with midi heels and closed toes, it will be a short lived style, praise be!

silverpenguin · 04/06/2018 12:21

I love them! They seem to really suit my shape, I'd never analysed it before but I'm a tall-ish slim-ish pear shape so maybe that's why.

They are easier to wear than minis and maxis too and more practical.

Interesting about knee length looking frumpy now, it's true that a couple of times recently I've put on a knee length skirt and thought it didn't look quite right but couldn't work out why. Now I realise it's because they look a bit dated. Weird how fashion trends seep into your subconscious!

BadTasteFlump · 04/06/2018 12:23

Silver I think knee length still looks ok as long as it's straight or fairly fitted. Any flarey-ness makes it look a bit dated imo.

Stpancras · 04/06/2018 13:31

As a tall, slim person I so thankful for a trend I can finally wear. Contrary to popular belief, shopping is a nightmare for my shape.

Underparmummy · 04/06/2018 13:34

I like them. They look good on me if I'm wearing heels and ok to fine if I'm in flats.

I am challenging myself to try shorter skirts though before I declare myself totally past it in a few years time.

Underparmummy · 04/06/2018 13:36

have read a bit more... I have good ankles/calves (these and my shoulders are my best bits, the in between is less so!).

Odiepants · 04/06/2018 13:51

They do nothing for me at 5'3'' and pear shaped. Midis hit my legs at the wrong point and I look drowned in fabric - I have long legs for my height but midis make me look short and stumpy.

On the knee A line skirts or just above the knee lengths look much better as my legs look longer. I'd rather look not stumpy than wear a midi skirt cos it's in fashion.

PugwallsSummer · 04/06/2018 15:09

I'm short but love midi dresses! My legs aren't great from mid calf up, so they hide what I want to hide.

BiscuitsRule · 04/06/2018 15:17

I’m 5ft 1 and midis are fab on me. Really flatter the lower part of my legs. I also agree completely with what AuntiStella said.

whatwouldbe · 04/06/2018 16:08

look fab on me (5'11 and slim). it's the only length I wear. dislike maxi and mini looks way to short on me. midi all the way
