Am I the only one that thinks midi length is unflattering?

This horrible length reminds me of the skirts my mum wore through the 90s! They look rubbish on me.. and most people I see them on!
Am I the only one thinking this? I went shopping looking for maxi skirts or knee-length but was thwarted in most shops!

I'm average and I like them, but it depends on the style. It can be a bit frumpy. No tights is good.

rightknockered · 04/06/2018 16:12

I'm surprised by all the comments about wearing with high heels, I can only make them work with trainers and birdies. All other shoes just look odd. What footwear is everyone wearing?

rightknockered · 04/06/2018 16:14

birkies not birdies

RatherBeRiding · 04/06/2018 16:15

I am very small so most things are midi on me, unless they are meant to be tunic length and then end up just skimming my knees!

However, I am a slim 8/10 and I like the longer look but only if it's a very streamlined style with something fitted above the waist. Otherwise I look drowned in fabric!

Katescurios · 04/06/2018 16:15

I'm 5ft8 and fat, l like midi length because it's easy to wear. I hate long skirts wafting round my ankles and anything above knee feels indecent for work, plus i spend all my time checking my knickers aren't on show.

Redcrayons · 04/06/2018 16:18

Also tall and like midi, as they’re closer to knee length on me.

Ohyesiam · 04/06/2018 16:20

They remind me of Mother’s Union meetings when I was little.
Contraceptive skirts.

goose1964 · 04/06/2018 16:22

I love midi dresses as I have huge muscular calves and hate the way they look in shorter skirts.

LemonysSnicket · 04/06/2018 16:23

I'm short but thin and look good in a midi - it's hard to find midis that aren't maxis on my height though.

GibbertyFlibbert · 04/06/2018 16:32

As others have said, you need to be tall

Almahart · 04/06/2018 16:38

A midi with boots is my all time favourite look.

I love them in the summer but they have to come between my ankles and the bottom of my calves. Tricky to get them right

Peanutbuttercups21 · 04/06/2018 17:19

I am 6ft, size 12 (big hips) and bought one from Toast in their archive sale

I really liked the look of it (it's quite a voluminous one) but DH said I look like a Rumanian peasant in traditional dress (thanks, Toast Wink)

I am totally over knee length though, and wearing mid thigh in my late 40s.... I dunno, I do it sometimes but then I get beeped by cars (live along a main road, too many white van men) and feel embarrassed and confused

I like how young people wear baggy jumpers with midis, it's so cool and has a nice I-don't-dress-to-please-men- vibe!

Floisme · 04/06/2018 17:22

Yeah I think that whole body con look is getting a bit stale now. Time for a change.

I have two midi dresses, one is a plain navy jersey wrap and one is a green stripy thing, and they are both much more flattering on my shape than any other above knee dresses. Long skirts are so hard to get the length right and i don’t have particularly attractive knees so prefer longer length. I think midi can look quite classy.

Bugjune · 04/06/2018 18:50

I'm 5'9 and size 10, so tallish and slimish.

However, I look like a sack of shit in midi length. My hips look massively wide and my legs look short and shapeless. I can wear pretty much anything and look okay but those bastards just seem to cut me off at the most unflattering place.

Shmithecat · 04/06/2018 18:53

I'm tall (6'2) and a size 14. They just look like I couldn't get a maxi skirt long enough 🤷‍♀️

lindyloo57 · 04/06/2018 18:56

i agree with floisme, at 5ft3 i wear them with knee high boots in the winter and in summer ancle boots or even a flat shoe, as a midi comes down to around my ancle.

Icklepickle101 · 04/06/2018 18:57

I’m 6ft and fitted stretchy midi dresses look amazing. Anything remotely baggy looks horrendous

bonzo77 · 04/06/2018 19:02

5ft2 and curvy (not overweight but I have boobs and bum). Midi length is great on me. I have nice legs from below the knee (rugby player thighs and elephant knees). They’re practical too, and I wear with birkies or small wedges. Or dr martens or trainers or wellies or anything really.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 04/06/2018 19:11

Icklepickle, any links by any chance?

auditqueen · 04/06/2018 19:17

I'm short (5'2") and fat (size 20 now - just come down from a 22!!) and I love midi skirts. Admittedly, as I'm so short they come down just below my calves where my leg is slimmest. I even bought, and look ok in (at my size you don't look good, so aim for ok) a pleated one from M&S. I have been wearing it with a white shirt and low heels and even had some compliments!

Maxi skirts are ridiculous on me. I have a couple but end up either tripping over everything (mostly the dog) or holding it up like a Victorian!

It looks awful on me unless a fitted, ‘bodycon’ style. I’m 5’7”, slim with good legs. The straight down or A line styles in that length look frumpy as hell. Generally, the best length for me is just below the knee but it depends on the cut/style.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 04/06/2018 19:51

I’m tall and l love them too. So does my friend who’s 6ft.

The mini looks wrong in terms of proportion when you’re tall. Never been over keen on maxi (and by that l mean ankle length) Midi should start at mid calf and maybe go a bit lower. I HATE knee length or just below the knee which is definitely not midi length,it’s the most unflattering length ever.

After years of not wearing skirts or dresses I’ve suddenly started to wear them again!
