Do you often get told you look nice?

By your partner, friends, colleagues? I like clothes and makeup and always hope I look ok but never seem to get told it. Sometimes gets me down I suppose!

I do. Like you, I quite like hair, clothes and make up so I tend to notice how other people look and I regularly pay genuine compliments. Perhaps people are just returning the compliments.

Do you ever compliment other people on their style?

Maybe you always look well so it's taken as a given. People mostly notice when someone looks different to usual.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 07/05/2018 22:16

Yes, only if you you look different do people notice!

So you must always look nice Smile

Ridiculouslyso · 07/05/2018 22:16

That's it, I compliment my friends often, just can't ever remember receiving compliments back.

Yes I do, but then I am always "done" (hair & full face) whenever I'm out of the house, whether for work, school run, walking the dog, shopping etc.

BrownTurkey · 07/05/2018 22:19

I used to, but have noticed it does not happen any more in recent years! People still sometimes notice a haircut (but don’t specifically say it looks nice!) but never a new outfit any more 😫

Mulberrysilk · 07/05/2018 22:19

You must always look well then.

Passmethecrisps · 07/05/2018 22:23

I can think of a few people who, if I mentioned every time I noticed them looking good I commented, it would be daily. So I don’t bother unless it is something very specific. You probably always look great so people take it for granted.

The flip side is my situation - I look so rubbish that if I have brushed my hair people wonder what I have done differently and comment

Ivgotasecretcanyoukeepit · 07/05/2018 22:23

Yes all of the time but I spend a lot of time on my appearance. The previous posters are right though you probably always look good and well put together so it’s the norm.

One of my friends rarely bothers with her appearance but when she does she looks stunning and gets lots of compliments as it’s unexpected.

JaneJeffer · 07/05/2018 22:23

Nope and I compliment others (jealous feckers Grin)

Mamabear1475 · 07/05/2018 22:23

Yes I do. By dp. Every. Bloody. Day. No matter what I look like. So it doesn't feel like a compliment when I actually get done up. Confused ungrateful cow I am

rightknockered · 07/05/2018 22:24

Not often, but I think I look good most days. Grin I only wear stuff I think I look good in. The only ones that do actually compliment me are friends that have a similar interest in clothes and shopping. I think others probably just assume I'm 'vain', but who cares? I like making an effort.

Olddear · 07/05/2018 22:27

Yes, I like to be groomed. My DH always says I smell nice too!

xsquared · 07/05/2018 22:27

Not often, but only sometimes.
People usually comment on my outfit rather than my face or hair.

Stormwhale · 07/05/2018 22:31

Yes i do. Dp tells me every day, my mum always says I look nice and friends will often compliment an outfit or my makeup. However, I think they are just kind people and say nice things. I make an effort, but I am by no means trendy or particularly gifted with makeup. I just wear a bit of mascara day to day, but can do a full face if i am going somewhere more formal or special. I choose clothes that are flattering rather than bang on trend.

winterisstillcoming · 07/05/2018 22:33

Not as much as I used to , but I don't hang around with those types who compliment all the time. I do compliment, but only when there is genuine sentiment behind it.

TashaKinz · 07/05/2018 22:34

I did used to and then it kind of stopped for a bit but has started again now I'm pregnant. I find when I put time into an outfit I normally get a compliment or if I don't really do much outfit wise but do my makeup. I agree with previous comments you probly look great all the time so ppl don't say as they think you already know you look good. But I understand how u feel, it's always nice to hear it once and a while. That's y I always pay others compliments when I think something looks good

Schmoochypoos · 08/05/2018 07:22

Only when I’ve blow dryed my hair, put on some make up and perfume and wearing something other than really boring clothes!! I suppose because I only do it every couple of weeks people tend to notice.

LanguidLobster · 08/05/2018 07:26

I'm sure you do. Could you ask if you look ok?

I guess I had 3 compliments last week but 2 of them were to pacify me! The first was someone who said he liked me which I was surprised at, then second was someone who said I injected glamour into the place (I don't in the slightest, he was indignant on my behalf as I was mistaken for an OAP, I'm 30 years off that - he said I handled it well as I just giggled), and third when a friend picked me up to drive me home I said 'someone liked me this week!' and he said angrily 'why wouldn't they? You're gorgeous'.

It's nice to get compliments but you can tell when they're genuine or not.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/05/2018 07:28

My daughter will tell me. Dh-if I ask if I look ok will say Of course you do, but I get the feeling he's stopped seeing things like that. Other people, never.(despite me always being "done"), so obviously I don't.

zippyswife · 08/05/2018 07:44

Rarely get compliments these days- never from dh (unless you count “absolutely fine” as a compliment). I put more effort into considering what I’m wearing and ironically feel more confident and look better in my 40s than ever. The lack of compliments don’t bother me. I give lots of genuine compliments. I always seem to think everyone looks lovely and always tell them! I don’t mind that it’s one sided.

0ccamsRazor · 08/05/2018 09:15

Dh is alway super lovely and compliments me a lot, I do take care to always wear a put together outfit, jewelry, footwear and clothing has to match. I do get randoms complimenting me too, so I always careful to say thank you and compliment them back, quite often it is someone that I have helped for example, held the door open for, reach an item from a high up shelf in a shop, packing someone's shopping for them whilst they see to crying child etc. I smile a lot too and say good day, which I think makes other people feel good?

Frankiewears · 08/05/2018 09:18

You look nice...... Jackie.

Oldraver · 08/05/2018 09:33

All the time from OH, quite often from friends, never from my mother (though if she looks me up and down and doesn't make a negative comment, I take that as a compliment from her Grin )

I'm not a make up person but do like a nice dress, and I suppose by MN standards I make lots of fashion faux pas

echt · 08/05/2018 09:50

Someone at work came up to ask about my lovely lashes: their words not mine. Same as always from my POV, but curlers and MaxFac 2000. To be fair, some ancestor or other gave me long lashes, for which I thank them.

I felt absurdly pleased, though at 63, it's not often the younger generation ask for beauty tips.

Ridiculouslyso · 08/05/2018 09:58

Oldraver I also can't remember the last time my mum complimented me! It has been years. I do tell her she looks nice though, she often does.

I mainly dress to make myself happy - so I shall carry on doing that!
