Bank Holiday Wardrobe Clearout

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 08:56

Currently my bedroom is in a horrific state. Clothes and shoes everywhere. My wardrobe is similarly horrendous.

I regularly find myself using precious holidays in an attempt to declutter / sort but never seem to get the job finished.

Determined that tomorrow (Bank Holiday Monday) will be the last holiday spent trying to sort the bedroom of doom.

Anyone out there to chum me for tomorrow's marathon? I am aiming to post a pick of the finished decluttered wardrobe for accountability.

I have made a list of things I love and plan to cull to 150 items including shoes, scarves, belts etc. I'm not including underwear, nightwear or sports clothes in that figure. I know that's still a lot compared to Project 333 but I think it's realistic for me. It will be the kick start to a year's shopping ban during which time the number will hopefully reduce further, then I will go for a strict one in , one out policy.

It's my 49 th birthday this week and I want to have a year of sorting my shit out, house, excercise etc so I feel I've made a lot of positive changes before reaching 50. I would love to live in a more minimalistic, eco way I the next decade.

Hoosier Toiletries - I have at least 10 shampoos/conditioners/face washes bought and hardly used as me or DD didn't like them. Luckily, a lady from a local women's refuge posted on a local FB group (about something else) and will take them. Going to do a clothes/bedding clear out tomorrow and hopefully she'll be able to use them as well.

I still have a bookcase of books that I know I won't read (will keep plenty of others) and items from my mother which I still don't know what to do (well, I do, but just procrastinate) with after 9 years.

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 16:55

Wipsglitter I hope I get a few nice surprises of unworn items as I go. Wishing you luck with your sort out.

I did some stuff today and have a huge pile. The good news is I have a pile of stuff in can get into that I couldn't last year ( ideally it would have been too big but it's all progress!). The bad news is I don't need to shop for anything else.

Shoe and boot cull tomorrow....

Oxfordblue · 06/05/2018 17:26

I'm in - although I'm not doing great as I'm on the sofa with avoidance tactics.
I can't move in my room for clothes. I'm so piss bored with them all though & uninspired. I think most of the problem is I feel (at 49 too) that I don't look nice in any of it. And of course there is the thrill of the chase to track something down...

Bramble71 · 06/05/2018 19:13

I've got quite a few pieces in the wardrobe that I have hardly worn but don't fit me any more so I need to clear them out, too. Most of it is really nice stuff, quality brands etc so I can't bear to just hoy it out. I've put some of it on eBay today instead. Hopefully it will sell but, if not then I'll just have to put it all in a clothes bank. At least I'll have some actual space in the cupboards! Best of luck with your clear out, OP.

HoosierDaddy · 06/05/2018 21:07

BagelGoesWalking - I did think about contacting a refuge, but wondered if unsealed items were appropriate, never mind the actual partially used bits, it's a bit of a grey area- you wouldn't know if the contents had been tampered with

KarenfromFinance · 06/05/2018 22:16

Travail sounds like you had a productive day! Hope the shoe cull goes well.

Oxford know what you mean about the thrill of the chase. I'm going to try and go cold turkey on that for a while and get the use out of the nice stuff I have. At the moment my stuff is owning me, not the other way around. ....
I sometimes feel my clothes are not looking great on me, but there are so many gorgeous, stylish women out there in their fifties and beyond and I'm trying to be inspired by that. As I said at the beginning of the thread... this is the year I get my shit together before the big birthday Smile (hopefully).

Thank you, Bramble

Have set 5.45 alarm (gulp). Have taken some 'before' pictures but they are too awful to post BlushBlushBlush

I'm up and It's on!

Quick coffee then I'm emptying bottom of wardrobe of shoes, hoovering it and getting shoes sorted.

Then sorting rails while creating charity and eBay piles.

Wardrobe shelves next.

Bedroom drawers.

Then tackle all the miscellaneous crap in room.

Clean room.

List for my benefit to keep me focused Smile Not the best way to spend a holiday so this needs done properly.

DaisyRenton18 · 07/05/2018 09:20

Good luck Karen! Sounds like a busy day but so productive. Hope it all goes well.

You've inspired me to do my shoes (the whole wardrobe needs doing really, but I just don't have time today).

HoosierDaddy · 07/05/2018 09:22

Go Karen!!!! Looking forward to seeing the "after"

Betsy86 · 07/05/2018 09:33

Looking forward to your after pic :) my bedrooms not much better is a small house and has the storage cupboard in for hoover etc... currently its stuffed full with stuff i was ‘clearing out’ but stuffed it in there telling myself il do a carboot sale. So everything from cupboard is just all over the room along with floordrobe!
It just needs to go really is draining!!

KarenfromFinance · 07/05/2018 09:43

Thanks for cheering me on Hoosier, Betsy and Daisy!

Already losing steam Confused but the fact I promised a photo is making me plough on!

Open the windows, crank up Spotify and have a coffee if you need a boost.

The fact that I am lying in bed still, whole doling out tidying advice, is laughable

Binkybix · 07/05/2018 09:53

Thanks for the before photo - love stuff like this! Sadly I’m not at home today or I’d join in - although DH sorted his stuff stealthily, robbing me of the best ‘before’ photo!

rubybleu · 07/05/2018 10:27

KarenfromFinance I’m doing this today as well! I have made a bit of a head start and have sold 18 items on eBay as well as listing another 8 last night, and also sent a bag to the charity shop. I’ve found eBay is only worthwhile for popular high street labels - Hobbs, Jigsaw and Karen Millen especially. I’ve sold stuff new with tags that I remember buying in our old place (pre summer 2013)...

My goal today is to finish my closet and under bed storage so I can store our suitcases away! And list the rest of the stuff on eBay except for a handful of proper winter gear items that won’t sell well at the moment.

Like you, I hate that I’m doing this on a beautiful bank holiday but my husband has already flown away for work this week & I’m determined not to let my “stuff” ruin any more weekends. I recently visited my parents in my home country and realised they are actual hoarders (albeit, all very organised and tidy) and I’m determined not to end up the same way.

I also had my colours done recently which has done wonders for my buying habits and given me a bit of structure around my wardroe - I’d really recommend doing that.

KarenfromFinance · 07/05/2018 10:29

Lol Hoosier

Spotify cranked

That photograph is unbelievable.

KarenfromFinance · 07/05/2018 10:36

Lola you obviously have the tidy gene and don't understand how the other half live!

Public areas in my house do not look like that!

Rubybleu I completely identify with your comment about weekends being ruined by stuff. Feeling quite determined to move to a much more minimalist lifestyle.

Hope your clearout today goes really well!

OP posts:
charityhallet · 07/05/2018 10:44

Well that's helpful Lola.

I must be awful as I don't think your before photo looks that bad! I don't have a lot of space though (3 kids in a 2 bed) so mine os organised but looks cluttered due to being in a small space.

I am wondering where your colour is though? It all looks very navy! Mind you maybe colour is why I look like an overgrown scruffy student!
