Wide leg jeans - yay or ney (with photos!)

Hello, I need some advice about jeans. I’ve been wearing skinnies since I went to university well over a decade ago and I fancy a change. Plus, I’ve recently had a baby so I’m not quite the same shape as I was...
I’d like something wide leg and casual, but I’m 5ft11 tall and I’m always afraid of looking bulky.

I want to love these (because they were a bargain and they’ve got cracking pockets!) but I’m just not sure. What do you think? Should I keep them? Or stick with my trusty old skinnies (in the last photo)?

It’s a nay from me, I think because they’re slightly too long? If they were relaxed, but ankle length I think that would look more flattering.

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2018 14:48

I think side on they look fine. Front on I think it looks like you're wearing your husbands jeans. They just look too big for you.

3stonedown · 01/05/2018 14:50

No from me too. Maybe if they weren't as long. To be honest I think you look about a dress size smaller in the skinnies

Luckingfovely · 01/05/2018 14:51

I think you look far better in your skinnies - sorry. The big ones looks like you've nicked them from a much larger bloke, which is not the aim of boyfriend jeans.

Can you mix it up with relaxed skinny jeans in a different colour of length rather than those?

NapQueen · 01/05/2018 14:52

The skinnies are more flattering.

Laquila · 01/05/2018 14:56

I so wanted to say yes to wide-legs but I’m afraid those are not a flattering pair.

Have you tried any boyfriend jeans? The Hush ones are v flattering.

Alternatively then how about some shorter wide-legs, more like denim gaucho pants/culottes? Or high-waisted straight-legs?

Spam88 · 01/05/2018 14:57

They look alright from the side but from the front they look too big for you.

ToftheB · 01/05/2018 14:58

Thanks everyone, I think you’re right. I’ll keep on looking for some that fit a bit better at the waist but have a straighter leg.

(I’ve gone off the skinnies too now I’ve photographed them at that angle Confused!)

Oh I actually like the wide leg on you. Why don’t you try some dungarees for a change. They could look good on you. And a change from skinnies.

Bubblesblue · 01/05/2018 15:02

Try slim leg- in between skinny and straight. I'm in exactly the same boat as you and just got some from marks and am happy with them.

TroubledLichen · 01/05/2018 15:09

I think wide leg or straight leg would look great on you but in a size that fits. Based on the first photo that’s probably about 2 waist sizes smaller and at least 2 inches in the leg shorter than whatever you’re currently buying.

Kenworthington · 01/05/2018 15:12

I think if you chopped thewide legs off at the ankle so they actually hang rather than bag at the ankles, they’d look pretty cool. All the wide legs Are cropped. I think they’d look much more modern . This is what I do with my wider leg jeans- literally just lop the bottoms off with scissors!

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2018 15:14

I don't think chopping them at the ankle would work. The reason is wide leg jeans are supposed to fit round the bum, waist and hips, these just look like she is wearing some big blokes jeans. It's the shapes that's wrong.

eurochick · 01/05/2018 15:16

These just look far too big for you.

ToftheB · 01/05/2018 15:25

They’re rolled up so that they’re slightly cropped in the photos from the retailer. monkeegenes.com/collections/sale-jeans-womens/products/womens-distressed-denim-organic-clipper-jeans?variant=4711868170281
Years of struggling to find trousers long enough as a teenager have made me afraid of cropped jeans though!

I think I’ll keep on looking for some that are more flattering at the top - I don’t think I can pull off the extra fabric at the moment!

A smaller size would look fabulous on you

Feawen · 01/05/2018 15:26

They do look too big. I also think slouchy trousers look better with a fitted top (just as skinny jeans work well with oversized or drapey tops). So I would either get some wide-leg but fitted at the waist, hips and bum style jeans, or some boyfriend jeans but pair them with a slim-fit top, if that makes sense!

HildaZelda · 01/05/2018 15:48

It's a no from me I'm afraid. They just look too big on you, more like a mans jeans. Your skinnies are much nicer.

Hogtini · 01/05/2018 15:57

Sorry but they do nothing for you, they look like a man's jeans with the extra space around the crotch. You have lovely legs in your skinnies.

OCSockOrphanage · 01/05/2018 16:00

Whatever leg shape/length you choose, it needs to fit your waist and bum neatly.

DuchyDuke · 01/05/2018 16:03

Try slim jeans.

Betsy86 · 01/05/2018 16:03

They do look too big but your skinny ones look really nice!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/05/2018 16:08

You've got great legs so it seems crazy to me to swamp them in all that baggy denim. They look huge in the crotch area Confused

The skinnies look a million times better imo.

CountFosco · 01/05/2018 16:23

I think they are a bit long and you should try rolling them up but I think they look better than the skinnies.

ScrubTheDecks · 01/05/2018 16:31

Oh, 'boyfriend' or wider jeans, definitely - much classier and 'arty' than skinnies, IMO.

But those are too big for you.

The linked ones, rolled up to on the ankle are better.
