WWW's six week 10 year younger boot camp, WEEK 1 all over again, everyone welcome

This is week 1 of the fourth boot camp of 2007 , everyone is welcome.

The rules (anyone can join):

This is about feeling better about yourself...not necessarily a diet per se etc etc

  • Sunscreen at all times. I know it's winter, there are still rays trying to damage your skin
  • No or little booze. Wine at the weekend is allowed if you want it
  • Walking is important, a small amount every day if possible. 30 mins if you can
  • Lots of water, aim for 2 litres a day
  • Apply body cream as often as possible
  • Use hand cream
  • Go to bed early, by 10.30pm if pos
  • Eat healthily
  • Be happy

The idea is that at the end of six weeks we all feel happier, healthier and glow with the good food, sleep, exercise, water and lack of sun damage

CQ - I like lots of those too! My Gym playlist is going to have about 60 tunes soon so I may have to start refining it for each piece, eg. treadmill, rowing machine, etc.

So far so good today. Dh is out so may have a nice long soak and see if I can get going with William Boyd's Restless.

winnie · 14/05/2007 20:33

Good day including 9000 steps. Although I did eat a small piece of homemade brownie that ds and I made. Nigella's cooking times are flippin' hopeless However, having had dinner with ds I just feel really bloated and not very comfortable and I can't quite believe that is down to half a Brownie! it is my first slip up in a while but I've no intention of it ruining things. If I feel better in an hour I will dig my Salsa dvd out.

At the weekend a friend of mine commented on how great my skin looks and today a friend I've not seen for several weeks was quite sarcastic about my obvious weight loss

feetheart · 14/05/2007 20:40

CQ - I love most of those tracks. Anyone who has Teenage Kicks on a playlist is on my level, its my favourite track ever and I remember John Peel playing it to death when it first came out which certainly shows my age!! There also seems to be a bit of an Echo Beach theme going on here too which can only be good!

Pretty good day so far:

  • very little nibbling (only 3-4 little crunchy oven chips that I just couldn't resist!)
  • sensible snacking-apples, raw carrots and only 1 choc chip cookie at a friend's when more were offered.
  • lotions and potions applied
  • lots of water drunk
  • exercise - rubbish as it was tipping down both times so no walking to pre-school however I have ordered a Moron so that must count for something!

MI - resting sounds sensible, hope it pays off.

moondog · 14/05/2007 21:18

Yes funny that re Echo beach.
Mentioned a lot amongst MNers of a certain age.
Bloody brilliant song.

prufrock · 14/05/2007 21:42

CQ - come on over - you might even motivate me to get in there.

I've been so good today. Walked 20,530 steps (school run and long dog walk) and 20 minutes of yoga. Then a steam , though couldn't exfoliate or moisturise as I can't use my left hand properly. Lots of water. Smoothie for breakfast, Taramasalata, pitta and salad for lunch, and baked hake (see healthy and sustainable) in a tomato and pepper sauce with new potatoes and roasted asparagus. Will be going to bed very soon.

WideWebWitch · 14/05/2007 21:43

Oh hello, and well done everyone and a very big welcome to all new people, marvellous to see you.

For new people, this is how it goes, I am fairly good all week, as are lots of us and then everyone feels VERY virtuous and possibly smug at the weekend as I come along and admit to bottles and bottles of wine accompanied by lashings of lard on toast But often we all lapse a bit at the weekend and then we forgive ourselves because we've been good all week and ANYWAY, a lot of this is about looking after yourselves and being happy, not abstinence and misery. But if we lose some weight we're v happy. I have dropped 2 dress sizes since starting in Jan so it's slow but good.

I was VERY good today, I finally made it to 10,000 STEPS, YAY. But this is because dd woke at 5.45am so I thought some good should come of it and so I was showered and marched out into the drizzle in my trainers at 6.30am with Moondog's 'move yer arse' words ringing in my ears. It was lovely, I saw squirrels and ducks and dew. Anyway,

a pointless (if The Observer article is right) wheatgrass shot
A perfect skin vitamin tablet
100g Granola
an apple
a few walnuts, pine nuts, 3 brazil nuts and some (equally useless apparently) goji berries
100g reduced fat hummus
raw carrot/cucumber to dip into it
5 hard boiled quail eggs (22 cal each)
4 mini organic chiploatas
roasted veg
lots of water
Walked AGAIN at lunchtime! With sunscreen, factor 25, agree with batters on sunscren btw
But had to have lots of caffeine to stay awake at work
Was asleep at 11 last night, thank goodness
no booze today for 2nd night running

So not bad. My skin feels good although I look rubbish due to knackeredness and pmt.

Ooh, the sound of the suburbs. OK, if I listened to music, which I don't really (except odd free cds) I think my playlist would be:

Echo Beach
Loveshack, b52s
The soundtrack to Pulp Fiction
And Trainspotting
Just for you, here's a love song by the Damned since it was one of the first singles I ever bought (in red vinyl!) - gawd, I bet some of you are too young to remember vinyl aren't you? Sob!
Beautiful Girl, KT Tunstall
Perfect 10 Beautiful South
Anything by Blondie

Well, I did much better today than if I hadn't been on this thread so thanks! I did 15 minutes on my rebounder which doubles as a coffee table. I can't remember the last time I actually bounced on it! Resisted wine, drank lots of water and ate healthily. Roll on tomorrow!

foxinsocks · 14/05/2007 22:13

yoyo - I have just started William Boyd's restless! Managed a run tonight - only did around 10 minutes proper running, 2km I reckon (got bored with the 2 minutes run, 2 minutes walk) but as I'm still recovering from this cold, I wasn't too diappointed (and although I wasn't tired, my legs were sore ). Will try and start with week 2 of that running plan from tomorrow. Yoyo - do you wear the step thing when you run - if so where?

I've eaten
muesli and apricots
apple
lemon and orange muffin
falafel, hummus and salad wrap
grapes
a sausage
bean salad
loads of floradix!
jelly and ice-cream (ahem)

so far far better than normal.

have applied new cream

Incidentally, with the sun cream, think you can let yourself have a certain amount of non sun cream exposure (like 10/20 minutes, something like that) to get some vit D into yerself.

Marina · 15/05/2007 08:46

Morning all!
Yesterday was a good one on the exercise and happiness front: morning and lunchtime walks PLUS a rare evening out in the West End with dh meant I did an astonishing 23,000 steps by bedtime .
We had dinner in the loveliest French restaurant - La Trouvaille in Newburgh St, highly recommended, not least because it's not all rich sauces and the portions are very moderate. I barely noticed that tartelette de raisins hopping off my plate and down my gullet it was so petite . Thought Like A Skinny Person and did not get very drunk though
Batters, so sorry to hear about dp's contract I'll mail you
Winnie, how lovely about the compliments Well done!
Also love Martha and the Muffins, the Undertones, the Only Ones etc so am feeling very at home on the running chat even if I am not actually running, ahem
FIS - I never got the mail you sent so am going to scrutinise my address book and see if I can remember your real name - I think I do! Thanks for that
MI - hope some rest and taking it easy are working their magic
Have a great day all!

tortoiseSHELL · 15/05/2007 08:51

Londonmamma - that's a good idea - if I were to limit MN to that time of the pm, and aim to get house jobs done another time, that might help a bit. Or a bath would help as well, as I wouldn't get so cold!

It's mad isn't it, my metabolism does something really weird in the afternoon!

Cappuccino · 15/05/2007 10:44

hello I have my sunscreen on

I have had some water

I will do my walking today whilst delivering leaflets around some allotments

Londonmamma · 15/05/2007 11:10

Good morning. I've really surprised myself by doing 15 mins on the rebounder this morning as well as yesterday evening. Unheard of!! Drinking water and eating healthily
Have a good day all!

yoyo · 15/05/2007 12:18

FIS - don't wear a pedometer when doing the running. I know I walk a lot and don't think mine is that reliable. Not going to invest in a Moron!

Lots of similar musical taste on this thread - have you seen the Teenage Kicks CD (various artists the majority of whom have been mentioned)? Have tried to link but for some reason not able to.

Think today will be a good day as I am feeling very positive. Will either do Pilates or go to the gym this evening I think. Had a very poor night's sleep so will see how tired I feel.

Weighed myselkf this morning and found I had gained weight! Not sure how as my eating has been better than usual and I have done loads of exercise. Strangely though, I actually feel thinner.

Marina · 15/05/2007 12:27

The Moron's instruction leaflet says don't wear it to run
Tortoiseshell, that dip you refer to is commonly felt I think...that could be a good time of day to have a banana, my preferred snack attack alternative as it is so filling.

It was, you poor thing though batters
hope you feel better soon.

Monkeytrousers · 15/05/2007 14:32

God, will try again - am shit at this

kate100 · 15/05/2007 15:20

OK, I am wearing my moisturiser with SPF 15, have put body lotion everywhere this morning and have drunk water today. I also managed to resist the biscuit tin at my mom's, I usually have a complete snack attack there. Have not managed that much walking as DH has taken the pushchair to work , still I am going to walk the dog tonight and try and go out on my bike, unless DH want's to go for a run.

Tomorrow, I'm going to walk to pre-school, oit was my new term resolution, but the weather has been awful here, but I have to get used to it as DS1 starts school in January and there is no parking at all there.

I'm so glad you wrote that about the weekend WWW, as I'm going to see my best friend this weekend and she's celebrating good news and that means food and wine, will try and have some self control though.

winnie · 15/05/2007 15:49

Batters, the comment was very scathing... and basically was full of disbelief that I could be on a diet (I'm not) and what is the point as although I've obviously lost weight recently it will all go back on. Well... there's a challenge

ho hum

Hope you are feeling better soon

Kate, I think the fact that this is not 'a diet' but a 'lifestyle choice' (fingers down throat smiley needed) is why is is working for so many of us. Being 'good' 5 days out of 7 has to be better than making no effort at all.

Good luck everyone

winnie · 15/05/2007 15:50

yoyo, that weight gain is obviously muscle

Marina · 15/05/2007 15:56

Oh I'm sorry Winnue, I misread the intention behind those comments.
There will always be some who will want the status quo maintained and don't like to see others flourish
and you are so right about this being a series of choices rather than a diet per se. I am choosing to exercise more and discriminate more in how I eat.
Everyone knows that muscle weighs more than fat yoyo. It even weighs more than chocolate

Marina · 15/05/2007 15:57

Winnie - my fingers are really fat and frantic today, sorry

eemie · 15/05/2007 15:59

Can I join in?

I'm not drinking alcohol and trying to eat well and get enough sleep.

I'm hopeless about drinking enough water, erratic about exercise and rarely wear sunscreen so would like to follow the examples on here.

But energy levels are very low especially in the late afternoon...how can I get over that hump? I end up slouching on the couch with dd and then have trouble revving up again for the evening.

Marina, don't disappear altogether will you?

I must just mention that every single thing I own to wear to work proved to be so ridiculously too big this morning I had to go in casuals
