Do people really notice fingernails?

I’ll admit it, I’m lazy as fuck about my nails. They’re clean and trimmed and sometimes buffed, but that’s about it.

Manicures here are expensive, and I’m rough on my hands so they don’t last anyway. That’s my excuse for not bothering!

I can honestly say I barely notice people’s fingernails. Is it just me, and most people are noticing that I don’t make the effort? Blush

I don’t unless they’re dirty or ragged.

beebree · 03/04/2018 10:58

Hi,
fingernails are important but I think when they are clean then it's enough. Why going to an expensive manicure? I'd just go when I want to do it for myself not for anybody else!

CoffeeOrSleep · 03/04/2018 11:00

I notice chipped paint and dirty nails, but I don't notice short, clean, unpainted nails. Although I will admit to noticing nice manicures, the lack of one isn't noticeable IYSWIM.

HuskyMcClusky · 03/04/2018 11:01

I dunno. People bang on about being ‘groomed’, and I work in a professional job so I’m careful about grey roots / tidy eyebrows, and so on. I just do nothing with my nails and was wondering if I’m weird in not thinking it matters, IYSWIM.

I notice people's fingernails - whether they're clean or polished. I don't wear coloured polish on my fingernails, just clear, but they look tidy. I don't consider it to be a lack of effort.

Jozxyqk · 03/04/2018 11:05

People only tend to notice, IME, if they're either very dirty / scruffy / chipped, or very fancy / polished / blingy. Or, if that person is particularly interested in nails. Normal, unpolished nails, kept neatly trimmed or filed, with or without a bit of clear or pale pink polish, look good without being overly noticeable.

TSSDNCOP · 03/04/2018 11:08

You notice the extremes I think. If they’re minging or lovely, not so much in the middle.

HuskyMcClusky · 03/04/2018 11:11

Oh, definitely not minging. Always clean (I swim a lot, which may be partly why manis don’t last), and I have naturally quite neat cuticles and white tips.

I notice if chipped, dirty, different lengths, stained, bitten- esp the skin around them 🤢 otherwise I notice a nice manicure in a good way. Even, clean, buffed nails wouldn’t catch my eye

Jozxyqk · 03/04/2018 11:18

I think as long as they're cut neatly, with neat cuticles, they're fine. If you swim a lot you should get a decent handcream (one that doesn't have mineral oil or petroleum products as a base). I'm not a fan of Body Shop in general, but their hand creams are good. I use the foot cream too, really thick layer before bed, & put socks on over - wake up to much softer feet.

Raisinbrain · 03/04/2018 11:28

As long as you're not wearing chipped nail polish or biting your nails or they're filthy they look fine.

Mercurial123 · 03/04/2018 12:30

I don't like long nails so notice if someone has talons. I've never had a manicure they don't interest me and I'd rather spend money on other things. I file mine, push cuticles back and use clear gloss.

Thistlebelle · 03/04/2018 12:38

The only nails I notice are very long manicures. I sit and wonder how the person gets anything done.

I used to work with a (very nice and extremely competent) woman with very long, highly manicured nails. She had to do a very weird hand position to use her phone or type.

I used to find it endlessly fascinating wondering how she managed to get her contacts out or do her make up without scratching her self or how she got tights on.

(I was never rude enough to comment or ask I might add!)

Liz38 · 03/04/2018 19:53

I always notice nice nails out of sheer jealousy because mine are rubbish. They lose varnish in minutes - the only thing that lasts is shellac and that didn't last time - one is split and so I have to keep it super short and they are all different shapes. So I'm a bit obsessed with nice nails. As long as they are clean I wouldn't notice anything else.

Arapaima · 03/04/2018 19:56

I don't notice fingernails, and I've now stopped having manicures for this reason. I mean, I never had many, but I used to get them occasionally and now I don't. I'd rather spend my time and money elsewhere.

BennyTheBall · 03/04/2018 19:58

I notice nails, but only because I look after mine and do my own manicure once a week. Long nails are very eye catching in their general hideousness, especially that naff one glittery thing that was around a couple of years ago.

I really notice toenails in the summer and have a complete horror of hard skin on feet.

LiteraryDevil · 03/04/2018 20:02

I take more notice of men's nails. Horrible to see bitten nails on a 40 something bloke. Same with long or dirty or tobacco stained. Yack. And don't get me started on toe nails!
Mine are always very short, filed and occasionally painted in clear, colourless polish.

SleightOfMind · 03/04/2018 20:10

I have scars on my hands from my childhood so I’m hyperconscious of the attention people pay to hands, fingers and nails.

I keep mine short and clean and I’ve always been amazed how few people notice (my scars are really quite horrific).

I have inherited long, slender fingers and small hands and that’s what most people see superficially.

BennyTheBall · 03/04/2018 20:13

Yes, men's nails.

One of my colleagues has the most bitten nails I have ever seen. His fingers are mutilated. I imagine him manically chewing away at them in private. Yuck.

LiteraryDevil · 03/04/2018 20:26

Benny is his name Dave??

BennyTheBall · 03/04/2018 20:26

No, not Dave!

RingtheBells · 03/04/2018 20:28

I hope not Grin

specialsubject · 03/04/2018 20:31

I do if there are talons with a coat of paint. Yuck.
