Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Yes sleep apnea is awkward but great it was caught at such young age. I'm guessing she's not overweight or anything like that at her age which can contribute to it, the excess blocking her throat.
Yes the Cpap hood is used in ICT for things like blasting the crap out of lungs for pneumonia.

Tantpoke · 01/04/2018 00:21

*apnoea

Tantpoke · 01/04/2018 00:33

Actually have you tried cavilon spray?
Its a barrier film so not greasy like the creams.

Could be perfect if she's not allergic to it as the mask won't slip around causing friction.

Tantpoke · 01/04/2018 00:35

You can also get it as a cream in the purple packagaing but its the blue no sting barrier spray you want.

mintmagnummm · 01/04/2018 06:28

Terms have you tried eucerin aquaphor?

mintmagnummm · 01/04/2018 08:25

JDSTER how does the NARS compare to the itcosmetics?

yongnian · 01/04/2018 08:36

terms my suggestion for a barrier cream would be Egyptian Magic Cream. It’s working wonders where very many others haven’t. Hope you find a solution.
1/3 off French pharmacy at Escentuals just now, for anyone thinking of doing an EPP order...am looking at what I was considering from EPP to see if it comes in cheaper via Escentuals with the 1/3 off...

Termsandconditions · 01/04/2018 08:58

Tant that Cavilon cream looks perfect! The colostomy stuff I tried had alcohol in it (I think) and stung her like crazy. I will work through all your suggestions (haven’t tried Magic Cream or Aquaphor, actually).

No Tant, she’s slim, active, and bright. No asthma. No allergies. No longterm illnesses. No risk factors at all. I suppose it is good we (eventually) got it diagnosed. I do wish she had some peers for a bit of support and companionship in it. It’s just not recognized enough yet. She’s great in that she wears the mask every single night, but I worry for the teenage years. You seem to know a bit about apnoea Tant?

botemp · 01/04/2018 09:15

Terms, a bit left field but if the friction is contributing it may be worth trying Lanacane anti-chafing gel? It sounds a bit odd to be fighting silicone with more silicone but it's unlikely the same one. It does give a good barrier and helps resist the irritation from the friction.

Ididnthearanything · 01/04/2018 09:56

Tanks bo, that’s a good idea. I actually have some (tried it as a primer, was alright). As I have it handy I might try it tonight. You’ve all given me great choices. I’ll do the lanacane tonight. I’ll let you know.

Tantpoke · 01/04/2018 12:28

Terms She'll probably get more support when she's a bit older from peers, it's quite a thing to get your head around at that age.
The friends she makes now at school and via all her activities etc will support her later on when they are older and be more understanding because they will know her better and understand the condition without being scared of it iyswim.

Happy Easter everyone Easter Smile

Termsandconditions · 01/04/2018 12:49

Thanks Tant. Hopefully.

SophieLion · 01/04/2018 14:05

Hi Terms, all the lovely ladies on here seem to have come up with some great suggestions. I unfortunately don't have anything to suggest but I hope you find a solution to the problem Thanks

How are you feeling today Bo? Any better? Easter Smile

zoClueless · 01/04/2018 16:55

Bo, yes the Elta sunscreen was one I was looking at and then some of the Bioderma ones. I saw Dr Sam mentions the Elta one quite a bit which made me think it'd be worth a try.

Just trying to look at the Octicoxinate info online to see why some people ttc would avoid. It's really hard to know what stuff to use and not when there are conflicting sources of information - trying to determine what is worth the worry and what is ott from people who wouldn't want to apply anything in pregnancy...

Hope you are feeling better today

JDSTER · 01/04/2018 19:27

Great advice from Tant and in fact everyone who’s contributed to Terms tricky problem. Fantastic skincare indeed Easter Smile.
mint I’ve never tried it cosmetics so can’t comment.

mintmagnummm · 01/04/2018 20:41

Oh sorry JDSTER I thought you had for some reason 🙄

mintmagnummm · 02/04/2018 08:06

Ok so I used the eucerin spf and no stinging but it definitely feels greasier than my avene one and takes a lot longer to settle on my skin which I don't like! I'm going to give my avene one another go and if still stings I'll just use my moisturiser underneath it

botemp · 02/04/2018 10:05

Yes, Happy Easter everyone Easter Smile I'm doing okay, a bit more steady but then I haven't been doing much of anything Easter Blush Wisely skipping out on exercising today, maybe go for a leisurely walk in the woods instead if the weather lets up a bit. I'd completely forgotten we'd moved into April already, will put up the empties forms after this, I think we actually started doing those since March last year. Congrats us Cake Wine Chocolate

terms, I'm glad we were able to give you more options. Hope all went well last night.

zo, the bias against certain (unstable) chemical UV filters is that they've been found in trace amounts in utero and I think breast milk. Though the amounts are really low, to gain anything near toxic levels you'd have to use more sunscreen in a lifetime than is humanly possible. However, since most expectant mothers tend to be more cautious with a 'rather safe than sorry' mentality I do understand the concern. At the end of the day it is safe to use but it's up to individuals whether it's a legitimate concern for them or not.

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter Easter Smile and glad you're doing ok Bo a walk in the woods sounds lovely, it's absolutely peeing it down here but I'm back home now and have loads of washing and chores to do so I'm not too bothered.

I don't think my routine has changed from last time apart from ditching BHA - which has made a massive improvement, it was definitely too much for my skin combined with Differin.

Current routine:
AM
NIOD Sanskrit sarpons cleanser
Vichy thermal spray
Active formulas Vit c
Eucerin 5% urea moisturiser
Alpha h eye gel
Bioderma cicabio spf 50

PM
Una Brennan cleansing oil
FAB face wash
Vichy spray
Wait at least 15 mins then differin
Wait at least another 15 mins then Skinpep HA and FAB ultra repair moisturiser

Empties

  • Bioderma cicabio spf 50 - love it and already repurchased. Feels slightly tacky going on but absorbs really well and is fine under makeup, I like that it has some skin care properties too. Only concern is it may be a bit too heavy for me in summer months but hoping if I leave out moisturiser it will be ok. I've ordered the bioderma nude touch spf 50 as well though just in case as found this worked really well for me last summer as it's very matte.
  • La Roche posay cicaplast gel (anti peeling) - already repurchased, it's been a staple for me for flaky peely skin during winter, hoping I won't need it much in summer (especially now I've stopped using BHA) but like to have it on hand.

Products on trial

  • Skinpep HA - think I might have been trialling this last month but hadn't used for long. I've almost finished it now (trial size, was about 6 weeks worth) but don't think I'll RP as it didn't seem to do anything, whereas the hylamide sub q visibly freshens my skin up.
  • Active formulas Vit c - again was using last month but hadn't trialled for long, been using a couple of months now and not sure. Doesn't seem to have much effect but no irritation or itching and I like the texture so will use it up before trying anything else.
  • Una Brennan cleansing oil - do NOT like the smell (washing up liquidy!) but does a good job, no irritation and doesn't make my eyes sting so will use up but probably look for something less scented when I've finished it.

Planned purchases
Just done a big EPP order but was all repurchases of stuff I have or am about to run out of.
Only new thing I'm considering is Vichy 89 HA, already had some good advice and recommendations on here about it, the only thing that put me off was someone said it was a bit sticky/tacky which I really don't like. I'm on a Qvc waitlist for pestle and mortar HA so might give it a couple of weeks and see if that comes back in stock. I have a bit of hylamide sub q left that I can eke out in the mean time.

mintmagnummm · 02/04/2018 14:49

Sallie mineral 89 is definitely not sticky or tacky

MrsDOnofrio · 02/04/2018 16:01

Agree with mint, mineral 89 is definitely not tacky. It's a light gel that dries quickly leaving no stickiness.

SallieSallow · 02/04/2018 16:35

I can't remember who said they find it a bit sticky now Grin it might not even have been here but on other reviews I read. I didn't like the texture of the Vichy Vit c much but everyone else is fine with it, so just made me wonder if Vichy face products aren't that great for me - though I do love the thermal spray.

I'll use up the sub q and then decide. I love sub q but I don't want to be too dependent on deciem products as they're hard to get hold of now and never have any deals anymore, plus I really dislike that Brandon bloke.

MrsDOnofrio · 02/04/2018 17:11

I don’t mind the texture of the Vichy vitamin C too much but I would prefer it to be a bit thicker. I feel like I have to practically chuck it at my face before it dries Grin. And it smells like ham Envy not envy

mintmagnummm · 02/04/2018 17:17

My skin is acting a bit weird at the moment but I'm due on any day now and have used a different spf to usual. Plus I'm having a new kitchen fitted at the moment and it has been a nightmare, problem after problem so I'm feeling quite stressed (maybe not as much as my poor OH though!)
