Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Thanks Miffy, I'll wait to see them irl. Definitely top of my wants list now. Smile

miffy2 · 26/04/2018 12:14

Mine arrived this morning! I’ll see if I can do some photos later to give you an idea of the two shades I have.

Tsmummy08 · 26/04/2018 15:11

Hi all, happy belated birthday JDSTER and hello again Bo and Pupsie :)

Another fan of the Hourglass powders here: I've got the Ambient Lighting palette and love it - it's known here as my "magic powder" for its blurring/glow-giving capabilities....

Talking of "wow" products, the only thing that has radically changed my skin in the last few years is tret. It's noticeably less (fine) lined... I've still got discolouration (age-spots) that not even Drunk Elephant vit C can help with, but I guess that's being middle-aged and not diligent with sunscreen until the last few years?

miffy2 · 26/04/2018 17:31

Here are my ambient powders. The darker shade is dim light; the lighter one is diffused light. Second photo is a heavy swatch; third photo is blended into the skin (difficult to see and to photograph!) Once blended on the face they are hard to detect but give an amazing finish.

I'm such a sheeple 🐑 🐑 🐑 just ordered the hourglass palette (am hoping it will work some magic!) and frezyderm spf 50 Blush

SophieLion · 26/04/2018 20:41

Tsmummy, what % tret do you use and how often do you apply it? Did you get any irritation at the start?

SophieLion · 26/04/2018 20:42

I hope you like the Velvet Touch SPF Sallie!

miffy2 · 26/04/2018 21:18

Sallie I have the palette too and it is fabulous. I actually hit pan on the Dim Light which is why I bought the full size (I rarely hit pan on any powder product). One of them is almost highlighter and one would be bronzer deep (on me) - you can swirl them all together for a gorgeous finish.

There are lots of YT videos showing you how to get the best out of the palette :)

Tsmummy08 · 26/04/2018 21:34

Sophie I was using OTC retinols e.g. SkinCeuticals for years and switched to 0.05% retin-A last April - I've had less irritation with this than high strength retinol, I think because my skin doesn't handle the conversion from retinol to retinoic acid very well. However, I couldn't use it over the summer because even with mineral sunscreen I found my skin was too sensitive. If it happens again I'll switch to a milder product. I looked at the one Bo likes but was a bit Shock at the price!

Miffy I do that swirl thing with the AL palette too, lovely stuff! Diffused Light looks very nice too :)

Sallie hope you like it after all that hype!

SallieSallow · 26/04/2018 21:59

My skin didn't tolerate TO retinol well at all, no terrible reaction but I peeled like crazy, I was embarrassed to go out in public as I was so horribly flaky. I wonder if it was the 'conversion' thing with me as well. I've been fine with differin so hoping I'll be ok with tret, mine is 0.025 strength.

I'm looking forward to getting the hourglass, I hope I do love it as it is pretty pricey for a powder - though I got mine on Beautylish which was cheaper than Space NK etc prices. I'll check out YouTube vids thanks Miffy

I'm looking forward to the frezyderm too Sophie I like my bioderma nude touch but it's tinted (more like a foundation/cc cream) and I wanted a non-tinted option.

EnidButton · 26/04/2018 22:10

Ooooh swatches! Thank you Miffy Cake I think diffused might be slightly too yellow for me...maybe. Dim light could work as a very subtle bronzer on me. Very tempted just to get one.

TantricTwist · 26/04/2018 22:30

I love my Hourglass Dim light.

Now my skin is a bit drier due to using retinol I am using moisturisers I had banished (and luckily kept) to the back of my shelf (actually I have a whole shelf dedicated to products bought and not liked for various reasons)

Anyway last night I was thinking I really need a night eye cream what have I got that I can use.
And ta da there was my lonely looking Liz Earle skin repair moisturiser for normal / combination skin used twice at the most banished for being too greasy.
It worked a treat around my eyes so I slathered it on the rest of my face and it felt lush and I felt nice and moisturised this morning and not at all oily.

mintmagnummm · 27/04/2018 06:06

Now I want the frezyderm! 🙄😬

Tsmummy08 · 27/04/2018 07:02

Haha Mint me too! Baaaaaaa Grin

Seriously, I'm always on the lookout for an effective, cosmetically elegant SPF - the amount of money I've spent on awful ones.....

Ollivander84 · 27/04/2018 07:17

I have two powders I like
Affect rice powder https://m.glossybox.co.uk/affect-transparent-loose-rice-powder/11604906.html
Hourglass ethereal light - I have the ethereal glow blush too which is lovely

SophieLion · 27/04/2018 08:48

I don't think you should feel like sheep! This thread is all about sharing and recommending and discovering things! Go for it! The more I use the Frezyderm, the more I like it and it's not super expensive Smile Sallie, it's completely invisible once it's on too. I don't wear make-up over the top though so no idea if it's ok under foundation etc or not.

Thanks for the tret responses Tsmummy and Sallie. Spoke to my dermatologist yesterday. My spots are improving but some are taking agessssssss to go (she said treating acne needs a lot of patience) and a couple of under-the-surface ones are coming up on my chin (think these might also be related to my period but the problem is they then hang around for a month+).

Anyway she asked me to try tretinoin because she knows I am (very) interested in using a retinoid and she said it is good for these type of spots. Got a tretinoin cream 0.05% (this is the lowest %) yesterday for just over 3 EUR (wow!!) at the pharmacy and had to put a very small amount just on my chin for two hours and then wash off (think she wanted to see how my skin would react). My chin was a little red after two hours but nothing else, washed it off and fine this morning.

Tonight I am allowed to do all of face (except the chin) for two hours again and then repeat again in a week. Am really quite excited about this!! Grin

botemp · 27/04/2018 10:10

Interesting developments, Sophie. At €3 I am wondering just how big that tube is, it's about 10x that amount here. Are you switching to an SPF50 now since you're on the Tret?

Sallie, how much did the Hourglass palette come in at with the duties?

INCI of the Frezyderm SPF 50 velvet attached for the sheeple contemplating it. Enabler? Me? Whatever makes you think that? Grin

Bo what are the glass beads in the ingredients list??

botemp · 27/04/2018 10:15

I do always wonder if MNHQ keeps track of top enablers... I only ever made it to the swears by once though, and I sounded like a complete shill Blush

Should probably link more to become a swears by hall of famer like JDSTER
