🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The One Where Sallie Swallows Dermaplaned a Lion Named Fabio

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Sophie I had the LRP Serozinc and it didn't agree with me at all.

JDSTER you use the Nars tinted moisturiser, I'm sure it was your recomendation that finally pushed me into buying it

I tried it properly for the first time today and I love it, it totally suits my skin so I get why peope rave about it.

The Alaska colour suits me, it's a shade darker than my actual skin tone but I like that so I wouldnt go lighter, helps cover up my redness.
It has a lovely consistency, great pigmentation, dries quite quickly once applied but not too quickly, stays put and made my skin look like my skin but better, which is exactly what everyone has been saying who gets on with it.

I didnt apply any primer but I did use my vichy loose powder after which works for me.

Tantpoke · 05/04/2018 17:17

Sorry I'm talking absolute bollocks I don't use the Garnier micellar water its the Simple Micellar I use to take off the bulk of my make up followed by the LRP Micellar

mintmagnummm · 05/04/2018 18:03

I REALLY want to try this NARS tm but I can't decide which colour! I was leaning towards the shade JDSTER uses, it begins with a g?? Im fair with light golden freckles (not prominent until summer) but I have red/pink undertone. I noticed on ingredients it says fragrance but on their info it specifically says free from synthetic fragrance

SophieLion · 05/04/2018 18:24

JDSTER, Tant, Enid, Miffy and Mint - Thanks for the micellar and LRP Serozinc info.

JDSTER, yes of course I'm sure the dermatologist has her preferred products but I actually thought she was quite reasonable. Tried as much as she could to stick with what I had and gave me samples of new things. In fairness I also told her that I wanted to change my Avene SPF as it makes my face too white. The Velvet Touch which she gave me is a transparent gel.

Similarly, the Frezyderm wash she gave me is quite a different consistency to the LRP Toleriane. Not creamy as all - so it's not like she just replaced the Toleriane with something very similar. She was a very nice lady actually but I didn't enjoy having all my products examined and being told that most of them I shouldn't have been putting on my face Easter AngryEaster Grin

So far my skin I pretty much the same! I miss using moisturiser and products though Easter Sad

SallieSallow · 05/04/2018 18:48

Micellar water stings me too, especially my eyes but I've only tried the garnier pink top one.

Thank you for sharing that Sophie I did think she'd got you back to basics so she could assess better what might be causing problems, interesting about the spf 30 and spf 50, I've heard that before but I feel 'safer' with a 50 these days.

Peony the Biore sunscreens are very makeup friendly, almost like primers in their own right, but they are drying and yes I think it is due to the high alcohol content. I have oily skin and am currently using bioderma cicabio spf 50 with no issues at the moment but spf is a bit of a nightmare and it's a minefield trying to find the right one for you. Last summer I used bioderma nude touch spf 50 which is like a combination of a primer and a tinted moisturiser. It is very matte though and unforgiving on any dry patches but I didn't find it dehydrated my skin, it just tends to cling to any dry or flaky bits that are already there.

SophieLion · 05/04/2018 18:58

Sallie, there's many people here who use SPF 30 (especially on children) as they think SPF 50 just contains too many chemicals. It's definitely not the first time I've heard that. I've always used SPF 50 though. As I mentioned, the derm generally prefers SPF 50 but is trying to minimise chemicals on my skin.

JDSTER · 05/04/2018 20:16

Tant I’m glad you like NARS TM Smile. Funnily enough I had a dream about you the other night-I discovered you were actually a teaching assistant I know at the children’s school GrinGrin

Mint can you be colour matched somewhere and try the NARS formulation to see if you like it first? If you explain your sensitivities they might let you have a sample (they don’t routinely give out samples unless they’re pre packaged samples, I believe). You sound like you’re just going to go ahead and buy some Shock.

Sophie I wasn’t suggesting your derm was unreasonable, more that it was what I’d expect- the pairing back of routine and suggestions based on her preferences for skincare.

SallieSallow · 05/04/2018 21:01

I'm tempted with the NARS tinted moisturiser but am determined not to buy any more makeup until I actually need something and I'm happy with it cosmetics cc cream and have one on the go and one in reserve already.

Forgot to say my Vichy 89 arrived today, tested earlier and initial thoughts are positive. It's more gel like and less watery than hylamide sub q but absorbs well and isn't sticky at all after all that Grin I'm also impressed with the samples Vichy sent, I was expecting sachets but they are quite decent sized tubes, will be handy for travel.

Sophie I would imagine spf 30 is fine for people not using actives/retinol etc as long as applied properly and re-applied regularly. I can't remember if you're a makeup wearer or not but if you are, did the derm have anything to say about foundation, powder etc?

mintmagnummm · 05/04/2018 21:15

JDSTER unfortunately I'm not anywhere near a NARS counter/stockist 😩

Tantpoke · 05/04/2018 21:25

Jdster that's so funny, esp as I would in fact make a really rubbish TA Grin. Talking about dreams I went into my kitchen this morning and was instantly reminded of a strange dream last night I had of my neighbour filling up loads of sinks in my kitchen with water.

Mint here are the lightest 4 colours Terre Neuve and Groenland look the pinkest. Obvs they will blend in more with your natural skin tone.

SophieLion · 05/04/2018 21:29

Oh no JDSTER, I didn't think you were implying anything at all. Sorry if my response came across like that.

Sallie - I have never really bothered with foundation or tinted moisturiser during the day as I always had nice skin so felt I didn't need it. Not the case now but I'm so used to not wearing anything that I can't be bothered. The derm said try to keep make-up to a minimum too and not wear it if I can avoid it. I just used a little Touché Eclat under my eyes when I went out and kept all my spots on full display Grin

I think Sallie that a lot of treatments/actives they stop in the summer here because the sun is so strong and people just can't avoid it really. Plus you spend most of your free time at the beach/pool during the summer. I can't say for retinol but they don't like any acids or vitamin C here in the summer.

I'm glad you like the Mineral 89 and hope it works well for you. Smile

EnidButton · 05/04/2018 21:58

Thank you Tant (Skyn ingredients question) I was thinking it might be the Ginko b too, I'll keep an eye out (Grin) for those two. Skyn do an eye serum, I'll have a look what's in that.

EnidButton · 05/04/2018 21:59

Thank you for sharing your derm experience Sophie. Very interesting.

JDSTER · 05/04/2018 22:17

Tant Grin
I was between Alaska and groenland in the NARS but groenland just looked better and I went with the consultants recommendation. It doesn’t seem at all pinky, despite it having a pink undertone. She was very good and was spot on with choosing the right colour for me. What colour do you think you’d be mint?

Sophie Smile

miffy thanks for P50 advice. I’m going to use again tonight . I was watching a video on how to use with a French lady patting it from her décolletage (of course) right up her neck then onto her face. I might pretend to be her tonight Grin

mintmagnummm · 05/04/2018 22:22

Thanks for the swatches tant

JDSTER at first I thought Alaska but I think that will be too yellow with a tendency to go orange on me, I'm leaning more towards groenland, although the swatch looks quite pink/peach 🤔

Tantpoke · 05/04/2018 22:30

Mint just go online and look up the swatches on different people to gauge the colour better. I am 20 in Chanel Les Beiges for example to give you something else to compare Alaska to and go up or down in colour from there.

mintmagnummm · 06/04/2018 06:10

Tant that's all I've been doin for days 😂.

mintmagnummm · 06/04/2018 06:11

I'm cool vanilla in no7 and nw18 in Mac

SophieLion · 06/04/2018 07:53

I could be wrong Mint but I imagine it would be difficult to buy something like a foundation or tinted moisturiser online and get the exact colour for you. Is there a chance you can wait until you get to a shop which sells Nars?
(Sorry if people do this all the time and get the perfecf colour! I just know I would mess it up and buy something that wasn't really what I wanted Grin)

By the way, having stopped Mineral 89, I can say that it was definitely working. Perhaps only superficially on the surface but lines around my eyes definitely looked better!

SophieLion · 06/04/2018 07:56

Saying that I would probably go for Groenland for me out of those swatches Easter Grin (it's Easter here this weekend so bunnies still ok!!!)

mintmagnummm · 06/04/2018 13:11

Thank you JDSTER Smile.** That blends in really well, it looks scary dark in first pic! Just shows you doesn't it. I've just called space nk and they are going to send me samples of groenland and Alaska! Does it have more coverage than the average tm?

JDSTER · 06/04/2018 13:42

Mint I know it does look scarily dark on my hand! That’s great that they’ll send you samples then at least you can see if the actual formula suits your rather touchy skin Smile. Yes I do think it offers good coverage for a TM. I was using ELDW previously. I didn’t layer it on thick by any means but I don’t feel I’ve downgraded by moving to the NARS TM.

mintmagnummm · 06/04/2018 13:48

Great thanks JDSTER. I do really like the itcosmetics cc cream and if I don't like the nars I'll repurchase this, I just wish there was a shade in between fair and light!
