If you are not stick thin, what do you wear to go to the gym?

Don't really fancy having my wobbly bits on display. Definitely don't think I could pull off leggings. Planning to listen to music on my phone so pockets would be handy too.

Joggers and a "boyfriend" style t-shirt from H&M.... even if I was skinny I wouldn't be in anything less than that!

Auspiciouspanda · 03/03/2018 10:57

I’m a size 18 and I still wear leggings. They can actually be quite flattering if you get the right fit.

I wear a relaxed fitting t shirt / top on the top.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 03/03/2018 10:57

You do realise most people are not 'stick thin', don't you?

BrownTurkey · 03/03/2018 10:57

Yes, cheese, I have been searching high and low for a longer length non clingy workout t shirt - has anyone seen one in an activewear fabric?

Dozer · 03/03/2018 10:58

I do classes and get really hot, so wear leggings, sports bra and vest tops, find if a I wear t shirts I get way too hot. People of all shapes and sizes wear all sorts.

DandelionAndBedrock · 03/03/2018 10:59

I wear joggers and a long sleeved running top. If I'm feeling a bit self conscious then I have some baggier yoga type tops that I layer on top and use it like a base layer.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 03/03/2018 11:00

I've always worn leggings (when I was every size from a 28 down to a 16 and now back up to a 20, oops!) but that's because it's my personal preference - I don't want flappy baggy trousers in the way.

My preferred attire is leggings (or padded cycle shorts) with a compression vest type top tucked into them (holds my wobbly bits in place a bit!) and a looser cotton t-shirt over the top

justkeeponsmiling · 03/03/2018 11:01

Umm thanks AllPizzas for that helpful post. I'm really not sure what that was for? I don't give a shit what sizes people are and what they wear - I am not stick thin, I have a massive wobbly arse and I feel uncomfortable having it on displayed if I go to the gym, hence asking for suggestions.
Auspisiouspanda where do you get your leggings from please? Although plain old joggers might be better, at least they have pockets. I'm just a bit worried about the sweat factor in joggers.

Usually 7/8 or 3/4 running tights and a semi-fitted top as that feels more flattering than a baggy tshirt

OuchLegoHurts · 03/03/2018 11:02

Get high waisted sports leggings, good thick ones, they'll pull you in at the tummy and eliminate wobbles. Then invest in a couple of good polo shirts... sports direct has good quality branded ones for very good prices.

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 11:03

Wear leggings but with a longer oversized t-shirt that will cover your bottom?

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 03/03/2018 11:03

The right leggings can be flattering imo if they are black. They sort of pull you in. I struggle to find longer baggy excercise tops though.

justkeeponsmiling · 03/03/2018 11:03

I overheat really quickly when exercising. Any brand sugfestiins re leggings? And where do you put your phone? I need music to block out the pain

Im a size 16 and wear a top like this over some leggings (also from decathlon):
www.decathlon.co.uk/run-light-t-shirt-id_8488318.html

It's not too clingy but it's proper wicking away fabric for all the sweatiness. And cheap! They have similar stuff in the sports bit of primark and H&M.

Hobbes8 · 03/03/2018 11:06

I have a running belt for my phone. It was a present but I think it was just from amazon. I also got some wireless headphones so I could pull my top over the belt without wires in the way. I like to hide my stomach as that's the wobbliest bit.

Auspiciouspanda · 03/03/2018 11:06

ASOS 4505, gymshark, H&M or primark. Some of my nicest ones are from primark you just have to try them on and do a squat test before you buy them to make sure they aren’t see through 😊

Allthebubbles · 03/03/2018 11:07

Gap have just started a range of high waisted sports leggings. Apparently they are great.

Dozer · 03/03/2018 11:09

If on machines inside a gym there are spaces for phones. You only really need pockets if walking/running outdoors.

You shouldn't be in pain. Perhaps a heart rate monitor to help you be in the right cardio zone would be good!

All the supermarkets now do fairly decent workout wear. And Primark. tK Maxx. Next, Gap. Under Armour. I personally like Gap and Nike and shop at an outlet.

TickleMcTickleFace · 03/03/2018 11:10

M&S active leggings are brilliant - I’ve had a pair for two years and they’ve fit me at 13 stone and still do at 10 stone and they’ve never gone see through when squatting! They’ve got a pocket at the back and always look for a drawstring in the inside at the front. Just bought another pair from elsewhere and they don’t have one so slip down when running Angry
I have a few vest tops but the best non clingy one is from nike, it’s long and skims over everything.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/03/2018 11:18

What size counts as stick thin? Hmm

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 03/03/2018 11:20

The point was just that all those who are not overweight are not 'stick thin', and even if someone is very thin it is rude to call them that.

fruityb · 03/03/2018 11:22

I’m not stick thin but I run in leggings and a long vest top with a running hoodie over that.

Leggings are quite possibly the most amazing item for sports wear. They’re comfortable, allow for ease of movement and can be more flattering than jogging bottoms. I’m a size 16 and have no qualms!

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/03/2018 11:22

Ah no @AllPizzasGreatAndSmall skinny people are fair game when it comes to trading appearance based insults around.

You can't do it to overweight people though, that's not allowed.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/03/2018 11:25

However OP, thread title aside. You want to get yourself a flip belt for your phone- they dont bounce about like bum bags do and you can starch your phone or whatever else you may want in there.

Avoid anything grey- it shows the sweat.

Runlovingmummy81 · 03/03/2018 11:27

Try Bluetooth headphones rather than finding something with pockets.

Matalan are good for leggings / longer vests etc
