If you are not stick thin, what do you wear to go to the gym?

Don't really fancy having my wobbly bits on display. Definitely don't think I could pull off leggings. Planning to listen to music on my phone so pockets would be handy too.

I feel hot looking at someone exercising in jogging bottoms so goodness knows how they feel. I change into joggers to go home!

justkeeponsmiling · 04/03/2018 08:33

I have ordered some stuff from Decathlon now. Leggings and vest too plus tshirt. I didn't want to spend too much just yet just in case. Thanks for helping me find the confidence, I know for a fact leggings will be much more comfortable. Will check out the other, more pricey suggestions if I enjoy it as much as I did last time, nearly a decade ago.

Great op! Let us know how it goes. Gym can be daunting.

OlennasWimple · 04/03/2018 12:51

Gap stuff is really good - I find their leggings are a good thickness, and their running range has small pockets for keys, phone etc.

Boyfriend smooth pants eliminate VPL and any accidental flashing...

Gap tops also seem to be long (on me at least) and some come with built in support. If I'm doing proper cardio, I wear a sports bra plus a crop top / top with support to help eliminate jiggle

BitOutOfPractice · 04/03/2018 14:21

Just got to the gym avoiding going in and you'll all be pleased to hear I have enormous pants on under my leggings today as these are my least sturdy ones. Thought you'd all like to know so you can rein in your horror at my pantlessness. You're welcome Grin

Op I hope you enjoy your new gyming

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 15:37

" I think the OP was just trying to find a way to say she isn't slim. She wasn't thin shaming or whatever you call it."

So she means people who are medium sized?
If you mean overweight, why not just say so?

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 15:40

I have tracksuit bottoms because I haven't bought leggings yet. They're not ideal tbh, don't look good and fall down when doing legs in the air at yoga. I agree that leggings with a large top are the way to go.

thegamblersmrs · 04/03/2018 15:44

Op as hard as it can be sometimes switch off to caring what you look like. I'm a terrible one to preach that!
When I was heavier I used to wear thick joggers and tshirt and thought I was very unfit cos I struggled to keep up in classes. I know it sounds daft but investing in leggings, good sports bra and decent gym vests really helped my performance.
They hold the wobbly bits in so they don't hurt when you work out and great for sweat- don't male you overheat!
The best I've found for good price is h and m.
Get a wee arm strap for your phone- get them on eBay quite cheap.
Good luck with your fitness. I'd probably never have kept up with exercise if I continued with the joggers!

Describing someone as being ‘Stick thin’ is like describing someone as being the ‘size of a whale’.
I know you didn’t mean to cause offence but think before posting.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 16:34

"Describing someone as being ‘Stick thin’ is like describing someone as being the ‘size of a whale’. "

I don't think that's what OP was doing. I think she was doing the same thing as when large people call skinny, slim, medium and slightly overweight people "skinny" i.e. they're seeing themselves as the norm and everyone else at the extreme.

FreeNiki · 04/03/2018 17:32

I saw this on facebook the other day.

Please those thin people complaining of offence here tell me how often they see memes of slim people in leisure wear being ridiculed?

It's nothing more than stealth boasting to complain about being body shamed here and stop derailing the OPs thread.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 17:59

Free - I think you have to change your FB friends because I never see memes of fat people in leisure wear being ridiculed on FB.

SnookieSnooks · 04/03/2018 18:02

Just bought some Nike leggings. They are made from a strangely stiff fabric but they act like a girdle. Somebody in the gym today told me I was slim. Hah! Thank you leggings!

FreeNiki · 04/03/2018 18:03

That wasn't from a friend.

That was a humourous page I followed and promptly unfollowed when I saw that.

Don't tell me you've never once heard of fat people being ridiculed ever in your life though.

dementedpixie · 04/03/2018 18:10

I need suggestions for leggings that stay up. I have some from sports direct - USA pro and some adidas but they both fall down. I need a size 18/20 probably. I am sorted for tops as I got them from curvissa

Lifeaback · 04/03/2018 18:16

@dementedpixie in my experience with gym leggings you pay for what you get, more expensive ones from specialist brands (gymshark, lululemon, sweaty Betty etc) tend to be a much better quality so stay up better unfortunately- they're pricey but a good investment imo if you exercise fairly often as they make things much more comfortable

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 18:21

"Don't tell me you've never once heard of fat people being ridiculed ever in your life though."

Very, very rarely as an adult. Last time was by a very large person herself.

Lifeback - I understand that you get what you pay for, but for someone like me who hasn't exercised in years, but would like to start again, can someone recommend some cheap ones. I never go to big Tesco and don't do online. I've looked at the Primark ones, but am not sure about them. Maybe H&M? Just want ones that draw the sweat away.
I also have a problem with T-shirts. They seem to be either long sleeve which I presume is for outside or with such short sleeves that I'd need to shave my armpits every time I go to the gym. Anyone know where I'd get normal short sleeves from?

weetabix07 · 04/03/2018 18:22

Regardless of your size, you wear what YOU feel comfortable in. That really is, all that matters. For me its cheap jogging bottoms and I have one pair of Sweaty Bettys which are expensive but very nice. And t-shirts or vests. I don't consider the aesthetics, just the comfort factor.

Branleuse · 04/03/2018 18:25

Im not stick thin, but i wore leggings, vest and sports bra to the gym as that kept me coolest and if i get too hot I cant do a proper workout,

SmiledWithTheRisingSum · 04/03/2018 18:34

M&S do larger sized loose gun tops.

SmiledWithTheRisingSum · 04/03/2018 18:34

GYM!

Dougietron · 04/03/2018 18:36

I have brought all different priced/brand leggings and I have to say usa pro from sports direct are the best I have. I have big hips but a small waist and they seem to fit me best and are incredibly comfy. I think different brands suit different body shapes and it's just finding what fits you well. I used to worry about my size going to the gym but after a couple of sessions I couldn't care less. As others have said everyone is there for the same reason and no one is judging. I also wear my granny bloomers and don't give a hoot about vpl and am regularly found wiping sweat off my face with my vest flashing my bobbly belly. Hopefully you will feel just as comfortable and achieve the goals you have Smile

Mamia15 · 04/03/2018 19:09

For cheap gym stuff, I would recommend Primark, Sports Direct/Decathlon, Matalan and TK Maxx. I don't buy expensive kit because I like to have a good selection so that there is always a clean set.

CallarMorvern · 04/03/2018 22:21

I must be really oblivious, as I'd be quite happy to be called stick thin, not that I am though 🙄.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2018 22:30

I thought the stuff in Sports Direct was expensive.
