If you are not stick thin, what do you wear to go to the gym?

Don't really fancy having my wobbly bits on display. Definitely don't think I could pull off leggings. Planning to listen to music on my phone so pockets would be handy too.

Oh and gosh yes, of course wear underwear!!

HuskyMcClusky · 03/03/2018 14:55

3/4 length leggings
Sports bra
Vest/singlet top. Anything with sleeves I’d WAY too hot.

Running Bare is my preferred brand, but only in the sale.

Always knickers under tights - I’d be too terrified of my tights splitting mid-squat! Shock

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/03/2018 14:57

It's never occurred to me to not wear knickers under leggings, I fear that I would chafe quite a bit.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 03/03/2018 15:04

I wear size 18 leggings from m and s sports section. Like a pp I wear cheap polo shirts or men's t shirts from sports direct. I feel covered but comfortable.

Foggymist · 03/03/2018 15:10

Good god I couldn't care less about VPL in the gym. Does anybody??

FlosCampi · 03/03/2018 15:31

I agree with the posters saying big and baggy makes you look bigger. Also a big t shirt flops around if you want to do a bench press or something. I was self conscious about being a size 18 but the point is you're there for a purpose that you share with the lithe of limb, your body needs to be able to move without impediment or awkward bras etc so you can focus on keeping good form or whatever. When you run outdoors and people cat call from cars it's horrible, but in a gym everyone is there for fitness and strength and stamina, it's not like walking into a night club on the pull where everyone eyes you up and down. People admire each other's technique, not their lack of vpl!

I wear this sort of stuff, like to put a vest top under a baggy tee so if for certain exercises that your top might flip up you still have the vest top underneath which is secure

Decent bra and you're well away

Lotsofsausage · 03/03/2018 16:42

Get yourself some really supportive tight high waisted training leggings (much more flattering than joggers) nike are good, and some of the thicker puma ones. I've also got a really flattering fitted dri - fit black sports top from primark, it's nice and long but looks better than a baggy t-shirt. Basically, black/ fittes/ nothing too thin fabric.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/03/2018 17:15

I care about vpl in the gym because if the knickers are cutting across my bum cheek as I exercise I find it uncomfortable and distracting. And also because I often do the the school run / supermarket in my gym gear on my way to the gym I don't want a vpl when I'm out and about.

And just because I don't want one. Couldn't care less if anyone else had one. Or if anyone notices mine. I just don't like it. It's a Thing for me.

So yeah, hope that's ok Grin

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 17:31

I'm paranoid now boop I'm going to check if I have a vpl.

😂😂😂😂

herecomesthsun · 03/03/2018 17:33

I got some of the Boden gym gear cheap in the sale when they did it and wear that. Gap do good fitness gear too. I wear leggings, why not.

HappyEverIftar · 03/03/2018 18:48

Under Armor do great long sleeveless vest tops.

justaweeone · 03/03/2018 19:05

As well no need for knickers with decent gym leggings
Not worried about vpl but more comfortable and not so hot!!Grin

DustandRubble · 03/03/2018 19:19

Sturdy by Design leggings, proper wicking tshirt. Runderwear pants are great for wearing underneath your leggings. I couldn’t wear joggers, too baggy. Maybe some straight leg yoga pant style trousers would be ok. But I like leggings as they move with you and wicking ones keep you cool.

CallarMorvern · 03/03/2018 19:47

I like Aldi/Lidl gym wear. I wear cropped leggings and tight vest top with close fitting T-shirt. I'm a 14, but tall.
Like other posters I feel bigger in baggy fitting clothes and feel sweatier in them. Plus big T-shirts can flop about revealing bare flesh.

CallarMorvern · 03/03/2018 19:52

Oh and I wear knickers, M&S big microfibre no vpl ones. Always wear knickers, as where else would my panty liner go (tmi).

Lj8893 · 03/03/2018 19:56

I'm a size 18 and live in leggings, in and out of the gym. To the gym I wear trainers, leggings (any brand but Sainsbury's are good) and a loose long t shirt. Oh and a decent sports bra is a must!!!

InterstellarSleepingElla · 03/03/2018 20:04

Size 18 and I wear sport leggings and baggy tee shirt.

TravellingFleet · 03/03/2018 20:09

Ive found that it’s much more comfortable to wear tight fitting supportive 3/4 length leggings (Sweaty Betty) than my floppy loose legged shorts. I’d guess the same goes for floppy trousers?

fruityb · 03/03/2018 21:15

Seriously get the leggings you’ll wonder why you were worried when you get them on! I got mine off amazon - queenie something. I have a running top I got from Sainsbury’s that has a hood and thumb holes and I buy vests from gap as they have a built in boob shelf and are really long. I wear a soft bra and those over the top so feel held in.

I would never go without pants though - that sounds unpleasant to me!

justkeeponsmiling · 03/03/2018 21:20

Thank you so much for all the advice. I think I'll try leggings and will spend the evening looking at the suggestions and links. I'm nervous about starting again after nearly 10 years of not exercising and I just want to be prepared. Thanks to those who have taken my thread title as how it was meant to be. I hadn't even considered it could cause offence, stick thin was not meant as a derogatory term but I accept that some people feel that it is and I appologise to those who feel offended. In no way was I trying to thin shame. As I said previously, I don't give a shit about other people's sizes, I only really care about how I feel about myself.

Oh and thanks for all the underwear advice Grin I always wear thongs due to a chronic VPL phobia so no problem there!

Motherwell91 · 03/03/2018 21:25

Don't worry too much about what you wear the fact yoir.putting yourself out there and trying to better yourself should be what you should focus on. Well done op

justkeeponsmiling · 03/03/2018 22:07

Thanks for the kind words Motherwell91

Totally get the leggings. They will be way more comfy than jogging bottoms and will even look better.

I do loads of gym classes and everybody wears leggings, even the largest ladies. They look great, and even if they didn’t, nobody cares!
