If you are not stick thin, what do you wear to go to the gym?

Don't really fancy having my wobbly bits on display. Definitely don't think I could pull off leggings. Planning to listen to music on my phone so pockets would be handy too.

OP posts:

The title of your thread is offensive. No one is 'stick thin' and it is rude to use that term anyway.
It seems okay to insult slimmer people but not the other way around.

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 12:11

Come now. I think the OP was just trying to find a way to say she isn't slim. She wasn't thin shaming or whatever you call it.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/03/2018 12:18

Yes forget pockets. Get Bluetooth headphones.

I wear what I'll be cool and comfortable in and don't give a shit what anyone thinks about what I look like.

It's usually three quarter leggings and a fitted-ish top. I think s big baggy t-shirt is absolutely the least flattering thing you can wear.

Oh, and a decent sports bra!

Dozer · 03/03/2018 12:23

Bluetooth headphones? Oooh. Sounds great! Are they expensive? Do they work well in gyms with crummy reception/wifi? (Sorry for technological ignorance!)

Wires are a right pain and I’ve often lost or broken headphones. One of the reason I like group classes more is no wires and no need to deal with technology!

Dozer · 03/03/2018 12:24

YY to decent sports bra, especially if like me you have big boobs.

Isjaki · 03/03/2018 12:30

Christ, life must be challenging for the people who are offended by the OP's thread title. Let us pray for those seeking offence where none is being given.

Isjaki · 03/03/2018 12:31

Can I ask a possibly stupid question. Do people wear knickers underneath sports leggings? You’re probably not meant to but what if catastrophe strikes and your leggings split mid squat?

Mamia15 · 03/03/2018 12:37

I always wear knickers under my leggings.

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 12:55

Always wear knickers, it would be too uncomfortable not to.

wizzywig · 03/03/2018 12:57

Yoga bottoms and a maternity tshirt.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2018 13:04

Sweaty Betty are good, I wear their running tights or three quarter length leggings, they are good and thick and pull you in. On top usually a sports bra and vest top. T shirts are just too much material and warm for me, unless it's a very thin close fitting one.

No one gives a shit though. You see all sorts.

BuzzKillington · 03/03/2018 13:10

I wear 3/4 running tights and a long line vest top that stops just below my bum - I have about 8 of each. I like Nike or Adidas.

Never wear knickers under the tights, they all have a built-in gusset.

Don't wear big, baggy things. I think they make people look bigger and baggier. Plus, not ideal to work out in.

BIWI · 03/03/2018 13:13

I always wear knickers underneath!

The best leggings I have (3/4 length) were from Asda. They have washed and washed and washed and still look good.

I usually wear an old t-shirt of DH or DS2 - I have some more fitted stuff, but I don't like showing anything wobbly or bulgy so only wear that when I'm a bit lighter.

Runlovingmummy81 · 03/03/2018 13:14

My Bluetooth ones were from Tesco for 20. They work fine ☓

Taytotots · 03/03/2018 13:15

I get too hot in full length leggings so wear 3/4 ones. As people say the material is really good and does suck you in so flattering. Decathlon are great for good quality sportswear and I've got some good bargains in TK Maxx. A belt or arm pouch for your phone and you're sorted. I know it can be daunting starting out but no-one will be bothered honestly and there will be people of all shapes and sizes. Nice workout gear is very motivating though - and yes definitely wear pants Grin.

8wheelsgood · 03/03/2018 13:17

I'm a size 18/20 and do weightlifting so no cardio but lots of arms up and down, I wear sports leggings from matalan as they're cheap amd don't roll down and a man's XL t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. I don't give a fuck what I look like but people I know from work go to my local gym so I need to be a bit modest. This way I can lift arms up without my stomach hanging out but am not restricted
I have a gym towel with a zipped pocket which is amazing,my phone and locker key go in that and I have Bluetooth headphones so i don't need to carry anything.

OuchLegoHurts · 03/03/2018 13:53

Tesco do great high waisted leggings

BitOutOfPractice · 03/03/2018 14:13

I never wear pants

The best leggings I have are from Sainsburys

Isjaki · 03/03/2018 14:14

I feel there is a study to be done on the overall risk taking attitudes of those who go knickerless versus those who are always knickered.

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 14:17

Haha. Do those who go commando not feel that the seams of the leggings pinch in certain places ? 😂

Foggymist · 03/03/2018 14:30

Why would you go knickerless under sports leggings??

OP on my bottom half I'm verging on "stick thin" (and am not remotely offended, it's not your fault I've a flat ass and not enough hips to hold jeans up! Grin) but am an apple shape with substantial boobs on top. I wear Primark workout Leggings, a tight Primark crop top over a soft bra (currently breastfeeding so my normal sports bra doesn't fit) and a loose Primark racer back vest top that covers my stomach and flat bum, but is so light I stay cool in it. Total cost about 15 quid. Knickers also Primark!

Isjaki · 03/03/2018 14:38

I thought people might go knickerless for a nice smooth line over their bum cheeks.

DandelionAndBedrock · 03/03/2018 14:42

I realise on MN this is the equivalent to charging into the gym brandishing a loo brush like a sword, but I wear thongs to work out (M&S cotton multipack, nothing lacy and synthetic). I figure if I'm spinning or squatting my pants are going to end up up there anyway, so might as well skip a step.

It's a revelation.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/03/2018 14:44

I go knickerless because

  • no VPL
  • more comfortable (for me)
  • cooler
  • leggings get washed straight away after workout
  • many have a gusset so are meant to be worn pantless
userofthiswebsite · 03/03/2018 14:47

When I first went to the gym I didn't realise that it was all about the legging these days and bought a load of trackie bottoms. I replaced it after 2/3 years of use with leggings. Both are comfy.
But I'd say 90% of females wear leggings in the gym and the remainder tracksuit bottoms or shorts.
