What items of clothing do you think adults shouldn't wear?

This was inspired by the Heart Patch jeans thread, some posters said they looked like Mini Boden kids clothes. I personally really liked them. It got me thinking, which items of clothing do you thiink adults really can't get away with? For example, I know some people say pinafores and Dungarees look stupid on adults.

Slightly off topic here, but I recently found my DD's Alice band in the living room, and popped it onto my head on my way up to her room. I then forgot about it...and caught sight of myself some time later in a shop window. I looked ridiculous.
The same with bunches. I look a bit special-interest when I put them in my hair, and I think the same when I see other women of my age (I'm 40) sporting bunches. Ponytails, for some reason, look ok.

Farfel · 25/02/2018 01:40

Things with words on.

halfwitpicker · 25/02/2018 02:02

No-one looks ace in dungarees, sorry.

Cold shoulder tops.
Crocs.
Any Disney clothing on anyone over the age of 10.
Bunches of course. Ridiculous.
Sportswear is fine outside the gym.
Controversial but wooden wedges, ugh, hate them.
I've loads more but can't think right now.

halfwitpicker · 25/02/2018 02:06

Men over 65 in jeans, especially when they've been ironed (the jeans, not then men). And they always look loose and too big on the legs.

Unihorn · 25/02/2018 02:12

I wear Disney clothes all the time sorry. In fact about 70% of my wardrobe is probably "childrens" clothes. I've just never been fashion conscious or updated my wardrobe much since the age of about 14. I do now own a few plain tops but I'm mostly a jeans and T-shirt kind of person.

alpineibex · 25/02/2018 02:15

Fully grown men wearing full tracksuits ie top and bottoms. Usually grey, usually scally twats.

My DPGrin "it's comfortable"

Cellardoor23 · 25/02/2018 02:25

I saw (in my opinion) one of the most attractive woman I think I've ever seen last summer, wearing dungarees and a white long sleeved top. It looked really nice. Granted she must have been about 5'8 and a size 8-10 with an all even tan.

I would just look like a potato.

Clothes I don't like;

Trousers with pockets half way down the side, unless for practical reasons depending on the job you do. Agree with nude leggings too.

Cellardoor23 · 25/02/2018 02:30

Meant to add those small buns that some women tie on their heads. Not a fan of that look either. Similar to a man bun.

I used to make clothes rules for myself but now I don’t bother. I own a lot of the things mentioned above. I love going to London and everyone just wears whatever they like. I probably will never wear my hair in bunches but wouldn’t judge anyone else for dong it.

Bluntness100 · 25/02/2018 07:30

I think dungarees can look good, but you need to be very tall and slim to look stylish in them and, sorry, but young ish. I also think if you're a quirky dresser you can get away with them too, because you have that over all style/vibe.

Bluntness100 · 25/02/2018 07:31

That's unusual, can I ask why? Is it financial or you just like wearing children's clothes?

wanderings · 25/02/2018 07:34

Another who wears sportswear a lot - in winter I live in trackies and trainers, sometimes Velcro ones (how childish!). I'm not a sandals or flip flops person - when it's warm enough for a summery dress, I'll have Superga or Converse on my bare feet.

I like ponytails too - I sometimes wish I could dare to wear hair ribbons but I draw the line at that.

Unihorn · 25/02/2018 07:42

Not actual children's clothes, they are bought in the adult sections of shops, just tend to have Mickey Mouse or something on. I don't really pay attention to what I'm wearing and I probably only buy new clothes every few years.

mypoosmellsofroses · 25/02/2018 07:56

I bloody love my 3/4 length trousers and I'm not a tena lady wearer! Being short but long torso makes it quite hard to find trousers that look right. My favourite item of clothing is a pair of wide legged 3/4 length culottes, can't wait for warmer weather so I can wear them again.
Seeing people wearing cold shoulder tops makes me feel chilly but the only item of clothing I think is truly horrible is boots with cut out toes - just why?

roseannaleeXo · 25/02/2018 07:59

@overnightangel try tell retail that jd sports Hmm

Pleasebeafleabite · 25/02/2018 08:04

On the subject of sportswear is anyone else getting the fabletics ad at the bottom of the page? Shock at those leggings I sincerely hope I never have to see those worn out of the gym

unbalancedBella · 25/02/2018 08:13

Some of these (tan leggings) would look horrible on anyone, any age.

I agree with those saying dress in what you like rather than how old you are. I can see the big 5-0 in the distance and I have dungarees, pinafore dresses and playsuits. I like them. No-one has called the police when I've left the house.

MrsDilber · 25/02/2018 08:45

I like a 3/4 trouser in the summer, really unflattering on my already unflattering figure, but I don't give af.

I'm considering a gillet for gardening, keeping my arms free.

Oh god, It sounds like I belong in Bon Marche 😶

longtallwalker · 25/02/2018 08:49

I think 3/4 length trousers look perfectly ok if you have long legs. Even better though are the 7/8 ones Boden does.
And I don't get the hate for dungarees. I'd love to have some dungarees. In fact.... I might have a little online shop this morning....!

thecatstrousers · 25/02/2018 08:54

Leggings as trousers isn't and age thing IMO, I didn't let DD wear them as trousers even as a toddler. I just don't like the look of it (personal option).

I do how ever love 3/4 length trousers, I'm not tall but I have got good legs. I think they may well look like Tena trousers if you have wide ankles and wear them with sensible walking sandles!

earlybirdhasanap · 25/02/2018 08:56

I'm wearing my dungarees right now. Love them. I just don't dress my toddler in dungarees when I'm wearing them Grin.

OliviaBkn · 25/02/2018 09:01

Thank you for all your replies, they're very interesting to read!
Yes, I caved in and bought Dungarees about a month ago. I've wanted a pair for ages, especially after seeing a woman looking fabulous in Dungarees in her independent fashion store in Whitstable 😊 Don't think I look as good as her in them, but I can only try!

Those massive Jojo bows on anyone but a child makes me cringe.

Also crocs if you're not working in a hospital.

I'm 5"11 so very often wear 3/4 lengths!! Unless buying from the overpriced tall section And even then they're not much longer Finding full length trousers/bottoms are a nightmare!

WilburIsSomePig · 25/02/2018 10:09

Well, I'd love to say that adults should wear what the hell they like, but I don't really mean it, especially when it comes to myself.

Can't stand: leggings
Anything described as 'fun'
Sandals with tights
Cold shoulder tops
Shoes that are too high for someone to walk in, looks ridiculous.

Oldraver · 25/02/2018 10:28

I call them Tenna trousers
They make you look like you are wearing bulky incontinence pants under them
Or maybe it's because the demographic that love their 3/4 length trousers are of an age where they ARE all wearing bulky tennas, I'm not sure

Oh crikey this has bought back memories of my Mum (large built so her 3/4 are always very flappy round the legs), constantly dashing in front of me and asking if I could see her Tena...

It's similar to bums on show with leggings...if you think that's going to happen then you need to cover the bum
