What items of clothing do you think adults shouldn't wear?

This was inspired by the Heart Patch jeans thread, some posters said they looked like Mini Boden kids clothes. I personally really liked them. It got me thinking, which items of clothing do you thiink adults really can't get away with? For example, I know some people say pinafores and Dungarees look stupid on adults.

Trainers outside of the gym. Agree with dungarees and pinafores. Slogan T shirts and things with cartoon characters on are also questionable.

SpringHen · 24/02/2018 21:24

Pop socks. No excuse ever

Those socks with the turned down frills

Love a gillet though. Keeps your core warm without feeling too wrapped up. Don't GAF how they look. It's comfort.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/02/2018 21:26

I wear frill socks too. Grin

KochabRising · 24/02/2018 21:26

Wear anything you want. In whatever colour you want.

I live in trainers in summer. Fuck wearing uncomfy shoes when you’re mucking about outside with a toddler.

The only things people ‘shouldnt’ wear Are deliberately offensive slogans (the chap I saw in a nazi t shirt and baseball cap last summer can fuck off) or facial coverings in inappropriate places (banks, classrooms etc.)

Everything else - wear whatever you like.

I try to be like five and am to some extent, but there are definitely things I'd like to do that I think other people would stare/comment on and I get scaredy and don't. Like big bunches in my hair now that's it long.

I've wanted some dungarees for ages but when I kept trying them on they never fitted right on me, I don't know if it's something to do with my proportions Grin ?? I'd love a pinny dress too.

Personally I am not a fan of gilets nor three-quarter trousers or ankle-skimmer trousers but tbf that's more out of practicalities than anything else. Like I don't see the point in ankle skimmers, if it's cold enough to cover my legs I want full-length ones and if it's warm in summer I want shorts. In the same sort of vein I can't see the function of a gilet as it doesn't have sleeves. But I don't think they're gross or that people shouldn't wear them or anything like that.

MeadowHay · 24/02/2018 21:30

I wear pop-socks with shoes/sandals that would otherwise rub and hurt my feet. Don't look as nice as bare feet but it's better for my skin and comfort so don't really care what other people think.

LouseHouse · 24/02/2018 21:30

I'm wearing a pinafore dress as I write this but I've never seen a gilet look good on anyone over the age of 5.
Now if it was under something I could understand it as an extra. But, just no on adults. No. Ugly and impractical as outerwear.

OutyMcOutface · 24/02/2018 21:32

Leggings as trousers (I still do this by the way at home-I'm just a slob). Anything from joules (asides from the basic plain Breton tops). Sneakers (asides from when doing exercise). Anything with a smiley face on it.

OutyMcOutface · 24/02/2018 21:33

Oh and ugg boots as shoes-they're slippers, why is that so hard to understand?!

WillAgeDisgracefully · 24/02/2018 21:33

I'm 57 and got my eye on a lovely pair of patchwork dungarees for the summer, will prob wear with my pink holographic doc Martin's No age limit

I have a Superdry jacket. I was very excited to hear it is apparently a very fashionable brand if you are young, and wasn't just the Costco bargain I picked up when I needed a jacket to do the school run in the winter. I did try to pretend it was an active choice when asked if it was a Superdry jacket, but I think my blank look followed by a check of the logo gave me away.

Bluntness100 · 24/02/2018 21:35

It's all well and good to say wear what makes you happy and not care about what others think, but it's really hard when deep down you know you look like a total muppet. Grin

giveitfive · 24/02/2018 21:36

I think for me it was the realisation that unless you have your skirt tucked in your knickers or a tit hanging out if your tee shirt... most of the time people just don't notice. We all spend too much time worrying about who is looking at us and what they will think but most of the time they aren't looking or thinking about you at all... they are worrying who is looking at them. I did an experiment at work where I wore the same (fairly bland) outfit every day for a week - not one person noticed. I even asked close colleagues on the Friday and they just hadn't been looking. I wasted my youth being concerned about what people (who I didn't even care about or know), thought about me, so I made a conscious decision to grow old disgracefully. The funny thing is, I thought my kids would be embarrassed, but their friends declared me cool and fun... I thought my husband would find me less attractive when I decided to ditch dyeing the greys away but he thought the silver highlights were fabulous... I thought my friends would be outraged but they look forward to my ridiculous choices and my sock and sandal ensembles have taken on their own celebrity status.... I decided life is too short. I am currently wearing dungarees over a Primark nightshirt that I thought looked cool with rainbow socks and men's sandals... (I'm gonna concede the point on flesh leggings though... not for age but just because they DO make you look naked...)

OliviaBkn · 24/02/2018 21:39

Your attitude and outfits sound amazing...I just bought a pair of dungarees which was a reason why I started this thread. Haven't worn them out yet but I will do when it gets a bit warmer

No adult should wear a onesie outside the house, if at all.

Very few adult women look good in either dungarees or crop tops (admittedly there are rare exceptions who manage to pull it off).

Also, I don't understand why anyone over the age of 10 would want to wear clothes with Disney characters on them. However each to their own.

overnightangel · 24/02/2018 21:45

Men over age 25 warring football shirts.
Men or women wearing sports clothes when not doing sport or going to the gym.
Fully grown men wearing full tracksuits ie top and bottoms. Usually grey, usually scally twats

FiveShelties · 24/02/2018 21:46

Leggings worn as trousers with no underwear on, especially flesh coloured ones.

I think leggings are the one thing you need a perfect figure for - sadly I have far from a perfect figure.

mamaryllis · 24/02/2018 21:48

I wore dungarees as a student in the 80s, and again when I was pg at the end of the nineties... I don't think anyone would cope if I tried to lever my chunky arse into them again.

Deely boppers and rara skirts. Anything with a playboy bunny logo or that says 'juicy' on the arse.

BuzzKillington · 24/02/2018 21:50

Dungarees. Tragic.

SporkInTheToaster · 24/02/2018 21:51

I look fucking ace in my dungarees.

CarpeVitam · 24/02/2018 21:51

Hate to see a grown person in dungarees! It just looks so wrongHmm.

StorminaBcup · 24/02/2018 21:52

Not a fan of Disney on anyone tbh as I find it really sinister although I realise I’m probably a bit odd! I also hate 3/4 trousers (I call them airport pants - everyone wears them at airport!).

Men in white jeans or light coloured denim.

CarpeVitam · 24/02/2018 21:53

Not that I think anyone should listen to me of course Wink

SpringHen · 24/02/2018 21:55

I also hate 3/4 trousers (I call them airport pants - everyone wears them at airport!).

I call them Tenna trousers
They make you look like you are wearing bulky incontinence pants under them
Or maybe it's because the demographic that love their 3/4 length trousers are of an age where they ARE all wearing bulky tennas, I'm not sure....

OliviaBkn · 24/02/2018 21:56

Why the hate for dungarees?! 😂
