Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

That's very comprehensive and helpful Bo, thank you.

EnidButton · 02/03/2018 15:03

bo Yes no products listed. Just the clothes. The red lip pic is next to the LM velour extreme matte in Fire and the hands/messy hair pic seems to be the Sally Hansen in Street Flair so maybe the pic you like is just the Lypsl balm as it's the only other product photographed? Looks some kind of balm to me. I'll have a look on the LM website actually. Haven't looked at their products for a long time.

EnidButton · 02/03/2018 15:04

as it's the only other product photographed?

The only other lip product, that should say.

SallieSallow · 02/03/2018 15:13

Just popping in briefly as I'm working from home and it's stupidly busy, so much for a nice relaxing day. But yes it is indeed me using AF Vit c 15%. I'd been using it for a couple of weeks and seems fine, have parked for a bit now though as my skin is really playing up with this cold weather, my own fault as I'm absolutely blasting the heating in my house and car which is dehydrating my skin really badly. I didn't have any issues with delivery, it actually came faster than expected, but I'm in the U.K., sounds like their overseas delivery is not good based on Bo's experience.

Will be back later to catch up properly Smile

mintmagnummm · 02/03/2018 15:14

Bo yes I have used eucerin shampoo as recommended by user if I remember correctly?! I did finish a whole bottle but it wasn't great for me, I didn't feel that it cleaned well and made my hair feel like there was some residue, also started to get a build up on my scalp towards the end of bottle. I'm quite liking the wella elements renewing shampoo but the conditioner isn't enough for my hair unless I use tons of it. Have just bought a diff conditioner to try with the shampoo so we shall see.

mintmagnummm · 02/03/2018 15:15

Anyone looking for spf I can still recommend the avene anti ageing spf 50 I'm on my 3rd tube

EnidButton · 02/03/2018 15:24

Looking at swatches, have a look at lip parfait colourbalm in Amaretto Swirl and Raspberry Ripple. Taking into account filters and it says she dabs colour on with fingers.

Also the Stickgloss lip colour could be a contender?

Don't know why they didn't list the products as they did the clothes. It's a beauty rather than fashion article. But anyway it's made me look at LM and want half the things now so maybe that's why. Grin

EnidButton · 02/03/2018 15:25

^ that was to bo

miffy2 · 02/03/2018 15:34

Sophie so far DE is only available in the US. I hear the range is coming to SpaceNK sometime this year but no date has been confirmed yet.

I am contemplating ordering some from Amazon or Sephora and having it shipped to me via a forwarding service that I use on and off. It would probably work out the same price as SpaceNK as I imagine they will mark it up substantially!

Tantpoke · 02/03/2018 15:43

I am having new shampoos and conditioners delivered soon by Schwartzkopf called Syoss salonplex and Oleo 21 because I fancy yet another change.

miffy2 · 02/03/2018 15:51

Oh I have an itch on me to buy new shampoo.

Currently I use either Philip K dry scalp shampoo or TBS ginger or tea tree for my first shampoo and then follow with Pureology Hydrate shampoo; conditioner is either Pureology or PK moisture balance conditioner.

I have my eye on the Briogeo range (don't despair, repair) for my hair but am holding out for a cult beauty discount code :)

miffy2 · 02/03/2018 15:52

Anyone else doing a lot of online shopping while snowed in? I have already bought new trainers (Brooks), some indie nail polish from my favourite maker Tonic Polish, and am filling baskets on amazon, active formulas, and Sephora. Somebody stop me!

miffy2 · 02/03/2018 15:56

Some of the things I am looking into are

EltaMD sunscreen (tinted or plain or clear??)
DE Umbra sunscreen (again, tinted or plain?)
Skin Actives vitamin C, anti-oxidant booster and eyebrow/lash serum
(Skin Actives will ship to Ireland and have a bigger range than Active Formulas I think)

peonylover22 · 02/03/2018 15:59

Thank you Bo. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the information. I’m going to take a bit of time to make a project of learning about skincare and read all the previous threads and re-read the overview info sheets. I agree that my no. 1 priority should be finding a good daily SPF.

I’m in between babies 1 (and hopefully) 2. Will probably start TTC in a couple of months. Is there even any point investigating retinol in this time frame? I think I read that it wasn’t safe when pregnant or BF?

SallieSallow · 02/03/2018 16:10

I'm not snowed in, I'm just a wimp who doesn't like going out in the cold Grin

JDSTER · 02/03/2018 16:48

Miffy I’m interested in Elta MD too but would really like to try it before committing to buy.

botemp · 02/03/2018 16:59

Thank you Enid Flowers will have a look at those at the counter. I'll keep an eye out in my inbox, SpaceNK sends me a 15GBP off coupon quite often with a 60GBP spend, may be worthwhile for you if you plan on buying a lot from LM?

I'm not really snowed in, it's just cold with really strong winds that make it feel arctic and it makes me want to go out all the time Confused as I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic with the idea of 'needing' to stay in. It's a bad idea as the cold just makes me more tired. Have been doing a bit of in-store shopping instead of online as a result, think I'm just really grateful to be indoors and warm again. I have a hankering for the new S/S stuff anyhow but my Medik8 r-retinoate did just arrive, it's packaged far fancier than my last phone I think Shock.

Unfortunately, they were out of the CE-Tetra samples, Enid, they may send me one when they come in again but I wouldn't hold your breath as they said it might be a while, as in being very vague about it. I assume they hope I forget about it. Maybe there's someone selling them on eBay?

Don't bother with the DE Umbra sunscreen miffy, it's terrible apparently. I think it's the SPF46 from EltaMD that gets all the love (but maybe it's 42?), I think it's not tinted at all?

peony, it sort of depends, if you're someone that only needs to sneeze and you're pregnant then it's probably not worth getting into retinoids as you'll build up and then have to take a year's break or so. If you're looking at a long difficult fertility scenario then it may be worth getting on them in the interim.

There isn't a consensus on it but BHA is a controversial ingredient among dermatologists for use during pregnancy, Dr. Sam advises against it but others think it's fine so long as you remain within the legal limits (2%).

Similarly, there are a few sunscreen filters that are considered controversial as they've been found in the womb/breast milk/baby, it's a bit iffy science but I understand the general concern so from that perspective an all physical sunscreen is a good choice, also because it's a good broad spectrum type that helps protect from pigmentation considering chances of melasma are considerably higher when pregnant.

Woo, indeed that is fancy packaging! taking it to the next level (I love nice packaging though)

I pulled the trigger on a couple of orders before coming back to read the comments!

DE - went to their website and ordered the C serum and also the Umbra tinted spf - whoops. Anyway I will use it regardless, in the summer months. Hopefully I will like it anyway. Found a 15% off code which makes it more palatable. I am using Gosend and the reason I ordered this week is I already have a small order from Target on the way there, so I can combine and pay one shipping fee.

I also ordered the last serum and a bottle of the vitamin C, plus antioxidant booster from Skin Actives.

I will put EltaMD on the wishlist for now as I don't know of any reliable places to order it here. Will do some more investigation in the meantime.

Now I will step away from the computer and go do some baking with the children.

MrsDOnofrio · 02/03/2018 17:34

Mint thanks for the Avene spf recommendation. I was considering it today - will definitely try it now.

Can anyone recommend an spf that can be used around the eyes? I’ve tried many over the years and they all make my eyes sting (I don’t actually apply it over the orbital bone but it obviously creeps). My chubby cheeks mean I can’t wear large sunglasses as they bounce up whenever I smile Hmm. Been trialling a Eucerin one this week and I love the lotion on my face but my eyes have been sore again

MrsDOnofrio · 02/03/2018 17:37

I found this website today. Has ingredient details and also many products loaded, apparently it is still a work in progress but is pretty comprehensive

SophieLion · 02/03/2018 17:58

I'm confused: is AF vitamin C, the Neostrata AF vitamin C or is AF is brand on its own? Wasn't getting v far with google.

I've asked a friend in the US to check out prices of the SC products and DE vit C and perhaps she can bring them over to me in the summer. In the meantime, I've just bought the Vichy vit C. Now that cost me 30 EUR for a month so on Bo's estimate that her SC one lasts about 5 months, the cost for the SC one and the Vichy actually works out the same Smile Smile! Think the DE one is cheaper than the SC.

Was also looking at LRP Posay in the US and saw that the new Toleraine hydrating cleanser with niacinamide is a lot cheaper than the normal Toleraine dermo-cleanser (unless I read it wrong - DCs were jumping all over me).

Mrs D - I have EXTREMELY sensitive eyes. I also use an Avene SPF every day and apply a few times throughout day as live in a sunny country. I am careful around my eyes and wipe underneath my eyebrows to make sure nothing drips down into my eyes.

mintmagnummm · 02/03/2018 18:18

MrsD make sure it's the avene anti ageing one as it's fragrance free but some of their others aren't!

MrsDOnofrio · 02/03/2018 18:27

Sophie and mint thanks both. Shall definitely give it a go. Hadn’t heard of Avene until I started reading these threads (on thread 6 now)

EnidButton · 02/03/2018 18:59

bo No problem Flowers Thank you for thinking of me anyway. I don't think I'll be spending more than £60 bit you never know atm Blush It's cold and I'm stuck in tomorrow again so online shopping is calling my name. I often get myself a present around this time anyway. Was thinking some Elemis bath stuff.

I wish I could skate! Closest we ever got was sliding around on the frozen town pond as kids. Deeply unadviseable in hindsight but it was the 80's so...

We don't have any snow now, just black ice and the most bitter wind I've ever felt in this country. It's 0 degrees feels like -6, according to my weather thingy. Actually I think I'll see what Bath things I have in and have a deep hot bath tonight.
