Best starter Retinol product

swimster01 · 15/01/2018 20:04

I was watching the BBC programme about beauty products and the benefits of using Retinol.

Can anyone suggest a good Retinol product to start with? I understand it's better to use a low dosage product (say 1%) and build up gradually.

Thanks

Following as I saw it too Grin

La Roche Posay Redermic R is a good one.

shinygoldstars · 15/01/2018 21:14

Yes, Redermic R for me too - it's 0.25% I think...

HuskyMcClusky · 15/01/2018 21:18

I think you have to start lower than 1%. I use Skinceuticals, and they recommend starting on 0.5%, moving up to 1%.

MissFoodie · 15/01/2018 23:11

Retriderm 0.5%
Its the one that kept appearing in screen on that programme, but I already had mine from
Facialist but you can order online, not expensive either. Skinceuticals is overpriced.

GetTaeBed · 15/01/2018 23:18

I was thinking about The Ordinary retinoid - 2% is not as strong as 2% retinol - my goodness it is a minefield though!

Mulberrysilk · 15/01/2018 23:34

I started off with redermic R and saw results. I've now gone hardcore with prescription strength.

CrypticClues · 16/01/2018 00:47

Anyone tried Paula's choice?

HuskyMcClusky · 16/01/2018 02:28

Retriderm 0.5%...not expensive either. Skinceuticals is overpriced.

Retriderm is more expensive that SkinCeuticals here in Aus, so you’re lucky! (Or we are unlucky.)

FartsMeanHearts · 16/01/2018 04:31

I have started with Indeed Labs Retinol Reface

AdidasGirl · 16/01/2018 08:15

I use The Ordinary.I bought the whole range as it's so cheap(£6-£13) depending on the product.
Got all mine from Asos as I had a 20% off discount code plus I get free next day delivery with Asos Premier.
It's already made a huge difference to my skin.
I tell everyone about how great it is.

expatmigrant · 16/01/2018 17:00

I just bought the retinol 1% in squalene and the rosehip oil from the ordinary, but just realised that you shouldn't use the oil after the retinol.
I'm quiet confused by the whole skin care subject.

FartsMeanHearts · 16/01/2018 18:49

Can you tell me chick BBC programme you watched? Would love to catch up on it

Jessica78 · 16/01/2018 19:33

Has anyone used any of the Poppy Austin products?

Jayfee · 16/01/2018 19:38

How old are those of you usng retinol? I am older and had an allergc reaction to an Avon anti aging cream ( red flush from face to shoulder and had only put it on cheek). I fancy trying retinol but don't know whether it was retinol in the avon cream and whether anything makes much difference to you when you are 50+?

awishes · 16/01/2018 21:55

@jayfee
I’m mid 50s and use retin A. I can’t say it’s turned back the clock but it has stopped my face deteriorating as fast as it was!
Start off slowly to avoid the redness and peeling.

FartsMeanHearts · 16/01/2018 22:03

I have just turned 35 and noticed a fine line across my forehead a few months ago. I hear it helps acne too which is another reason I am using it too as I get quite a few hormonal spots!

ginorwine · 16/01/2018 22:05

Expat
I'm confused
The regime they gave me was to use an oil after the retinoid ..

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/01/2018 22:20

Rosehip oil is different because it contains tretinoid acid.

You can use any other oil after retinol products.

expatmigrant · 16/01/2018 22:55

Thanks Chardonnay. Should have done a bit more homework before ordering.

HuskyMcClusky · 16/01/2018 23:17

Jayfee, I’m 43. I bloody love my 1% retinol. It has never made me red or peel, it has just retextured my skin. Friends my age often tell me what good skin I have (Although I do use a ton of sunscreen as well.)

Jayfee · 16/01/2018 23:22

Thanks Awishes and husky. Im going to give it a try!

onlyonaTuesday · 16/01/2018 23:25

Do as a complete retinol novice, can someone recommend a starter one and how I use it in my skincare regime??
Morning, night, daily, before or after moisturiser?

GreenSeededGrape · 18/01/2018 23:11

Are people using 50 or 30 spf?

HuskyMcClusky · 18/01/2018 23:23

I use SkinCeuticals, who do a 0.5% and a 1%. I started with the 0.5 and used it a couple of times a week, building up to evry second night. A pea-sized amount spread over the face after cleansing at night.

After I’d used that up, I bought the 1% and did the same. I now probably use the 1% three times a week. Always at night and only a tiny amount (it goes a long way, and too much will make your skin peel). I don’t put anything over the top on the nights I use it, although you can put moisturiser over (not under) it.

I use SPF50+ every morning, as I don’t buy lower spf than that.

I’m no expert, but this has really worked for me. I think I had redness and a bit of peeling once, when I put too much on, but that’s it.
